I was a boat captain for a high school team several years ago. One of the students was excellent with a crank bait. The student could be cranking a square bill and yell, “ Look, I am getting a bite!” I would look up from the drivers console to see his line moving off sideways. A few moments later the student would lean back on a bass, have a good fight and boat his fish. It amazed me how cool this high school angler was. I know I probably would have over reacted and quickly set the hook.

Would be so great to just sit and have a beer with you and listen to some stories. You didn’t mention a frog hook set. I feel like that is similar to a Texas rig set but slightly different as well. Would you be willing to give some advice on that? Thanks

On moving baits , spinnerbaits , chatterbaits , jerks , and cranks let the rod load up a lil ; Texas Rigs and Jigs let it move the line then reel down an set ; Jigs lines move reel down then set , Frog or topwater let the line tighten up , let the fish get it don’t pull the bait away from the fish as soon as u see the boil , I’ve been watching MrRandys info and just want to say thank you , cause I was like a loaded gun when I got my jig bites and setting with slack I would lose so many fish on a jig , but not now , and they were a lot of big ones too

I agree besides the frog I couldn’t imagine how many fish I would have lost if did that. You need to set the hook with that frog especially in cover.

You remember the guy name David wright that fished flw? I remember him from the buggs island that Mike terry won. With big crankbaits david just kept on reeling when he hooked one, very unique

Anorher video that is spot on!! My future son in law lost a huge fish last weekend. He jerked his rod back so hard that he nearly fell off the boat. We saw the fish "fly" out the water just to come off when it hit the water. Thanks for a great informative channel Randy.

Great stuff! Randy, I would venture to guess you hook set techniques have evolved as rods, line and hooks evolved. Forty years ago we had limitations because of short rods, slow ratio reels, stretchy line and hooks you sharpened with a file. It takes so little effort nowadays and your experience confirms that. I like it. Sweep sets???

I get a kick out these KZfaq anglers that have this massive snapping hook-sets. All show, no go. Great advise on different hook-set techniques.

Question for you Randy. We all know your a Bass Master but do you ever go out and fish for other fish species? If so, what fish do you enjoy fishing for? I would love to hear you talk about you doing some other fishing other than Bass. I know for myself sometimes I like to go out and fish for other fish. Lately it is happening more and more. Maryland is a great place for all types of fishing. There is a lot of great salt water fish here that can be a lot of fun.

I fish from a float tube a lot so I have limited leverage. I use a 7 and a half or 8" rod and skin hook my plastic worms and soft plastics. With jigs I don't trim my weed guards and never had any problems.

What kind of line matters too. Line with low stretch like braid or fire line doesn't require a hard hookset.

The small treble hooks on a jerkbait top water or crankbait will tear out of a fish easily and when you are moving these baits quick aɓ hard hookset will take the bait from the fish or pull the hooks loose. You never sèt the hook on a treble hook bait. When the rod loads up you speed up your crank of the handle until the rod is loaded up. If you are doing this and missing fish then you need a lighter action rod and sharpen your hooks. Thin treble hooks penatrate with little force if they are sharp. As to the Yamamoto story. If you watch old Bill Dance videos fishing he no matter the lure had did not have a hard hookset. He never stops reeling he just points the rod at the fish the pulls up. No matter the bait if your hooks are sharp and you have the right rod you do not have to try and break the rod on a hookset. Good hooks set themselves. Big bass set the hook themselves as long as the hooks are sharp and I don't mean cheap bait strait out of the box sharp. Those hooks are dull.

I believe I was listening to @bassafterdark and heard 1 of the panel members talk about this exact thing and I was practicing it the other night it was really hard to not set the hook when I would get a strike but I did manage to just actually reel down a hook set

My gf has better crank bait catch rates then worm/jig so this makes sense since she leans on the line and forgets to yank the rod.
