The crazy thing is, they could have purchased a camper for like $20k and been fine lol.

Since we spend $50 a night in hotel, it just made sense to spend $130k on an RV instead so we could spend $200/day in gas.

The trauma of my dad yelling at me to turn the wheel or straighten it out is motivation enough never to own a trailer ANYTHING!

I love Dave. He is so smart and always makes me laugh. No one can replace him.

And my husband wants an RV once we retire I honestly don't. We're still several years away from retirement.

They want to start trying to have kids in a travel trailer. 🤦‍♂️

People don't realize the money lost until they try to sell it and discover they can't get no where close to what they paid for it or what they owe on it.

We airbnb from place to place as digital nomads. We considered the RV route but the initial cost, even for a 2nd hand RV was going to be significant. The RV, insurance, maintenance, park costs, truck to pull it.. then all the gadgets and extras people suggest. Worse, ending up parking right next to other people, the noise, internet issues etc. So we decided to just eat the cost of renting as we traveled.

This guy called to flex and it kinda backfired lol.

I don’t understand why this guy did this. It is so easy to find barely used fifth wheels for 20-30k in good shape. Then just use your f350 or ram 3500 to bring it around the country

Ouch! One of my dreams is to own an rv one day. That’s what I like about Dave Ramsey. He is like a bucket of ice cold water in the face.

And he probably “needed” a brand new one because it would be “safer” and problem free.

Even thought Dave is exaggerating the depreciation, he has a good point: RV/Towables are crazy expensive (overpriced these days), depreciate fast, and worst than all, you still have to rent the space to park them! (and I am not counting the quality issues that people are reporting all over the internet) Probably he is spending even more money than he would in Airbnb/hotels a he is not even realizing about it. Other point Dave has is the cost, in a quick search you can find several 2016-2018 from less than 50K; they could have save a bunch of money if they were used, specially bearing in mind they are unlikely to be in YOLO mode with kids for long.

I'm saving this one to show my husband, he's basically Chad before the purchase 😅

The truck gets 8mpg if he's lucky, site fees are $50 plus a night, maintenance on the trailer and truck, insurance etc. It can't be that much cheaper than an air bnb or decent hotel

Many with "tiny home" nicer trailers find that out sadly. Many went on a show tinyhouse nation thinking they could flip it and I would see the home languish on Tiny Home Listings for months and months. They never went up in value

The rv for living on the road, excellent idea. The 100k rv? Bad idea

I can't believe they thought selling the house to buy the trailer was a good idea. If they had done some research, they would have seen how much a RV or travel trailer depreciates over time. Now they want kids and have no house. He ought to just sell it now while he can get more for it.

Trailers, campers, and RVs are a huge waste of money.

I feel bad for those kids.

A 5 minute spreadsheet could have easily projected costs with assumptions to highlight what a bad choice this was.

Listening to this and he will not do the advice as given I bettcha. He still wants to travel and wife want to do remote work. Selling is not going to be an option for them.

Left out of the equation, they also likely stay in RV parks for another $25 to $75 a night.

I see this all the time with travel nurses, they think they save money over staying in hotels, very bad decision it cost so much to park it, drag it, and heated and cool it.

Dave was right he should have bought a cheap used trailer used that and he may have sold it for the same amount he purchased it for.

Dave’s always worried about what a vehicle is worth. When I get a vehicle it’s mine until the wheels fall off so what it’s worth doesn’t matter 😂

Not quite in the past few years boats and RVs hold their value a lot better a 10-15 year old boat from what I’ve seen looking is more than half of what it was new

Hold on, why sell the house if you are not buying the trailer in cash? Why not keep it, rent it out for income and then you still have a home when you are done with this adventure dream. And then the justifications are just amazing.

I just wonder how they afford the fuel. I often thought it would be cool to have a RV and work travel. Insurance, fuel, upkeep, etc... it's a lot.

Running some numbers he could have easily done airbnb or stays at resorts/ RV parks that rent cottages, etc. and in 5-6 years would have spent about the same as what the RV cost him. But in that time without putting all your money into a 5th wheel or whatnot, he could have been saving in and had enough for a nice large chunk of downpayment on a house.

So he had a house and sold it to buy a rv 🤔 why would you want to raise kids in a rv smh

Used RVs hold their value. New RVs quickly loose value. More people are mobile living also keeping them in demand. The person should have went used and made progress. Traded the house for a vacation.

buy a house thats already depreciated. you aren't being so sweet with finance if this van you got is top of the line and new.

The caller could have had the same lifestyle buying a 5 or 10 year old pre-depreciated travel trailer. It is baffling to me that buyers are willing to take on so much debt to pay such high prices.
