We airbnb from place to place as digital nomads. We considered the RV route but the initial cost, even for a 2nd hand RV was going to be significant. The RV, insurance, maintenance, park costs, truck to pull it.. then all the gadgets and extras people suggest. Worse, ending up parking right next to other people, the noise, internet issues etc. So we decided to just eat the cost of renting as we traveled.

I had a friend bragging about his trailer. I said that he could have invested the money and paid for a hotel on the interest. He told me that he pulled up to a site and some other campers invited them over for ribs. He said that doesn't happen at a hotel. He is right. He bought into the culture and if you have the money go for it. Just know that the trailer isn't an investment. Pay cash and save some on the side for maintenance, storage, and lower MPG.

The point here is from financial point of view, the loss from depreciation in value, not against owning an RV itself. Buy yourself a 5 year old RV at $30k and let the first owner eat the massive $100k depreciation. The difference between a brand new one and 5yr one is not nearly worth that $100k. $30k plus maybe $5-10k renovation or upgrades some parts is much smarter financially. Like Dave mentioned, he has a boat but it is something he sees as a small pile of money he can afford to burn down and it would not affect his finances.

@jimmymcgill6778 no it is not different. They drastically overpaid for something that is rapidly depreciating in value. The principle is the same. How often you use it has no impact. People use their financed cars everyday and it doesn't change the fact that the asset depreciates.
@XXnickles
@XXnickles Жыл бұрын
Even thought Dave is exaggerating the depreciation, he has a good point: RV/Towables are crazy expensive (overpriced these days), depreciate fast, and worst than all, you still have to rent the space to park them! (and I am not counting the quality issues that people are reporting all over the internet) Probably he is spending even more money than he would in Airbnb/hotels a he is not even realizing about it. Other point Dave has is the cost, in a quick search you can find several 2016-2018 from less than 50K; they could have save a bunch of money if they were used, specially bearing in mind they are unlikely to be in YOLO mode with kids for long.

Dave’s back yeah!! 😊 No interest when he’s not around. Glad we’re not getting a new Daveless video every hour too. 😊 Awesome when he rudely interrupts then blasts the callers for being stupid. (And interrupts the cohost who can’t get a word in). 🤣 Dave’s #1! 👍

I just wonder how they afford the fuel. I often thought it would be cool to have a RV and work travel. Insurance, fuel, upkeep, etc... it's a lot.

Running some numbers he could have easily done airbnb or stays at resorts/ RV parks that rent cottages, etc. and in 5-6 years would have spent about the same as what the RV cost him. But in that time without putting all your money into a 5th wheel or whatnot, he could have been saving in and had enough for a nice large chunk of downpayment on a house.

He saw the other guys with their toy haulers and toterhomes and wanted that high life as well. Financed a $130k toy thinking it was going to pay for itself forgetting every month he doesn't use it he's still paying for it. Some can be really nice the first few years but nobody mentions paying for them in the winter months when not in use or the massive drop in resale after a few years.

Used RVs hold their value. New RVs quickly loose value. More people are mobile living also keeping them in demand. The person should have went used and made progress. Traded the house for a vacation.

The caller could have had the same lifestyle buying a 5 or 10 year old pre-depreciated travel trailer. It is baffling to me that buyers are willing to take on so much debt to pay such high prices.

Come on. You know it wouldn't have been all shiny with all flash and trash finishes. Besides, you can't impress your neighbors at the overpriced rv park with a used unit. Don't forget you also get to pick out the tacky design on your seating when you buy new.
