Have I used the wrong engine oil on previous oil changes? Have you possibly? Lets discuss the different oil specifications for VAG cars, along with the basics of how engine oil can differ for various engines.
Whether you have a Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda or a non-VAG vehicle, you may learn something new, as I learnt a lot while researching this topic.
If I have any information incorrect, then I do apologise, and if you are aware of any errors, let me know in the comments so I can add corrections below, for viewers to read.

the sweet spot is 5w-40 for 502-505 vag spec. 5-30 is the best for colder climate conditions. When tune-up is engaged the 5w-40 is the stantard due to high oil temps at high loads, even when cruising fast at Autobahn. Great content, keep it up. Audi driver here.

great video mate, as always super informative, im using valvoline longlife perofomance, bit pricie but its does the job great, i usuualy go for a bit thicker oil in the summer and thinner in winter. keep up the great work mate :)

Great video. you should also check for API SP grade oils, they reduce LSPI for direct injected turbo petrols :)

Cheers 👍🏻 I just recently used the Triple QX oil, from the video, as the quantums I had were more suited to diesel engines, and I was in a rush to change the oil. But I'm ordering up specific 504.00 spec quantum oil for my next oil change, as that's what I usually use. Years ago, before that, I was letting garages do the service, so not a clue what they had put in it 😬🙈 but the car has always ran perfectly and shown no sign of excessive engine wear, so it must have been decent quality oil too.

The one piece of advice I can give is to check out Opie Oils. Put your reg in and it will give you a list of the recommended oils , with all the correct manufacturer recommendations. What they don’t know about oil isn’t worth knowing . Me personally I use Millers EE Performance C3 5w 30.

Great info mate! I kust bought Motul 5w40 that is 511.00 and I'm trying to find info is it ok to put it in đy old s6 c5... Its v8 petrol from 2000

So , would you recomend using 5w40 for 2ltr TFSi opposed to 0w20 and 5w30 for my Audi A4?

How old is the car, and what mileage? I'm surprised your A4 recommends 0w20. Though 5w30 is the usual recommendation for a new 2ltr TFSI engine, so that will be fine for it. 5w40 is good if the engine has 100k + miles on it or if you tend to push the engine hard a lot of the time.

If your car is burning oil slightly, then it is maybe worth trying the same spec but a 5w40 grade instead. This will be harder for the engine to burn but should still offer good protection.

Hello friend, I have Audi a4 1.9 tdi 85 kw 2004 year, norm 502 00/505 00 can or not? According to the vw norm, it goes 505 01, will it hurt if I put 502 00/505 00? Greetings from Serbia

I don't know if it will hurt it, but if the recommendation is 505 01, that's what I would put in the car just in case 👍🏻

I have been using quantum platinum since I got my car tuned by r tech. Before that, I would use shell and castrol. R tech swear by quantum aswel.

@North Coast Workshop I like it aswel because it comes in 5 litres. Castrol only comes in 4 litres, and you end up having to get a 1 litre bottle, and they cost half as much as a 4 litre. hahah

I have a vw golf 1.6Tdi with Dpf an its using 5/30 liqui moly top tec 4200 504/507 but its burning it 1liter of oil in 2000km what do you recommend should i go for a higher grade?

5w40 but with the same spec required for diesel dpf vehicles would be worth a try. It's what higher mileage TFSI petrol engines seem to prefer when it comes to protection and less oil being burnt per 1000 miles, though it won't rectify the issue completely, and bear in mind the oil being excessively burnt could sadly be the indication of a more serious fault that requires attention.

Take a look at this option, it's a universal spec for petrol and diesel engines and safe to dpf's. www.opieoils.co.uk/p-295026-liqui-moly-top-tec-4100-5w-40-synthetic-technology-based-engine-oil.aspx Maybe worth a try or ask people's opinions on a any forums/Facebook groups you might be in 👍🏻

A lot of VAG guys are given advice to run 5w40 on harder driven vehicles and end up buying the quantum platinum 5w40 pictured in yoru video which they do not realise is a 505.00 spec for diesels as are many if not most other 5w40s. I feel you should have mentioned this in your video. Also Millers has lately taken a bit hit from several engine builders and performance shops which have found that it is breaking down at relitivly low temps and leaving moly sludge in the oil pans. Millers shockingly addressed this by saying tyhier oil in only suitable to around 112C. It also meets none of the VAG specifications. Though thier reps market this product heavilly it's not one to be recommended imo.

With the vast number of opinions and information out there, it can be hard to include everything into this one video. And as the video gets older, and more information and findings come to light, then the video sadly won't include the new findings. I believe some of the most reputable UK tuners still recommend Millers, but it's not something I've ever tried purely down to it's price, and as quantum does the job perfectly. Including the main breakdown of the engine oil specs hopefully helps everyone understand what they mean, and help them decide when picking their own engine oil. Hope that makes sense and that you can appreciate the challenge these videos pose when researching and filming them. Appreciate you leaving a comment and watching, Cheers

Quantum is VAGs own oil brand, and given the price point no reason to use anything else. Used to be made for VAG by Castrol, i guess thats why your oil cap recommends Castrol. But its now made by Fuchs these days.

Isn't 504 and 507 the same?

It can be packaged as the same, but the values 504 and 507 represent 2 different specifications when it comes to the oils purpose. (504 for petrol application and 507 for diesel application) A lot of oil brands package them together as a universal style oil, quoting both specs on the packaging for convenience. 504 507 has always been 5w30 But on newer vw 2021 onwards 504 507 in 0w30 Why have vag done this

From when I was doing research, vehicle manufacturers are trying to make their engines as economical as possible, and found resistance from the engine oil affects the economy slightly. So now they are aiming to develop engines that will safely run on as thin a grade/viscosity oil as possible hence the 0w20 and 0w30 oils now available. I suppose only time will tell how these engines fair after 15/20 years of use. Hope that all makes sense 👍🏻 and I appreciate the question.

Very good information my friend. I've got 2006 skoda Octavia rider 1.9 tdi diesel alh 5 speed manual non dpf. I am using Liqui moly toptec 5w40 502 505 505 01 in Indian hot weather. Is it good?

Liquid Moly is one of the top brands of oils, really good quality 👌🏻 and yes the 40 parts of the 5W40 will help it work in the hotter temps. A good strong engine in those cars 💪🏻

Thanks mate. But I feel this 1.9 tdi diesel engine is noisy like clattering. How can we make it smooth and silent as much as ? Is it any good to add oil additive like stp synthetic oil treatment or lucas ? I want to make idle smooth and silent.

I think those engines were a bit rattly from factory. Additives may help, but also if it is really excessive it could be something mechanical that is worn and needing replacing, but that's a lot of trouble to sort and gets expensive
