Should Britain abolish the monarchy and become a republic? For some, Britain's Royal Family is a huge part British identity and culture. For others, the monarchy is outdated; an archaic institution that damages our democracy. Since Barbados voted to become a republic, the debate between republicans and monarchists is back in the spotlight.
Note: THIS VIDEO IS A REPUBLICAN PERSPECTIVE: I will be exploring the monarchist view in a separate video.
Graham smith is the CEO of republic, the largest organisation in the UK pushing to abolish the British monarchy and replace the queen with an elected head of state; a president, turning the United Kingdom into a republic. He spoke to me about some of the misconceptions about the monarchy, and why he thinks it's time for the UK to let go of the Royals.
Queen Elizabeth II is Britain's longest reigning monarch, and is the Queen of the United Kingdom along with 14 Commonwealth Realms (former territories of the British Empire). She will likely be succeeded Prince Charles, the Duke of Cornwall and heir to the British Crown, and eventually Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge. The Royal family tree is sprawling, but how much power does the royal family actually have? More than you might think.
Queen's and Prince's consent mean that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles can amend or veto laws that affect their interests. They also possess a lot of "soft power" to influence and serve their own agendas behind closed doors.
Many republicans in the UK argue that the monarchy represents inequality in law, with one family inheriting superiority over everyone else. Graham's platform, Republic.org, is pushing for an elected head of state to replace the unelected monarch, an elected body to replace the unelected members of the House of Lords, and for a written constitution. Currently, the UK has no written constitution, which means laws cannot be struck down for being "unconstitutional".
He also stresses that, when it comes to monarchy vs democracy, the governments of democratic republics are more accountable to their people. As it stands now, the power that the queen would once have wielded is handed on a plate to the British Prime Minister, currently Boris Johnson, meaning that power in the British government is very centralised. Many people in Britain are still very attached to the royals - and I’ll explore the monarchist perspective in another video - so whether the majority of the British public will be ready to let go of them in the near future is unclear. But this much is certain: calls to end the monarchy are growing, and will likely intensify with the coronation of Prince Charles as King of the United Kingdom and, in the long run, it looks like the British Monarchy’s days are numbered.

The origins of the English monarchy began with the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain by Germanic settlers from mainland Europe in the 5th and 6th centuries. The settlers were not ethnically related to the original indigenous people of the British Islands, i.e. the Celtic. Cornish and Welsh tribes. The so-called current English royals are descendants of European royalty, most notably the German Hanoverians, who were also related to the Russian Romanovs, the last royals in pre-revolutionary Russia. In 1917, George V changed their surname from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor to make it sound English. Britons regard this so Britishness is about as bizarre as one could possibly imagine. It is also bizarre that some British people continue to OBSESSIVELY FAWN over the current representatives of this old institution which has an EVIL HISTORY and a PRISON - LIKE LIFESTYLE.

A Cult of Personality arises when an individual uses mass media, propaganda, or other methods to create an idealized, and at times, a ' god-like or a goddess-like ' public image, through Unquestioning Flattery and Praise. (Charles, his deceased mother Elizabeth, deceased Philip, William, Anne, Kate, Camilla including the other representatives) What is a CULT-? The group displays excessively zealous and unquestioning commitment to its leader, ( Charles ) Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged. The leadership dictates, sometimes in great detail, how members should think, act and feel. The group is elitist, claiming a special, exalted status for itself, its leader and members, ( Charles and the other representatives ) The group has a polarized us-versus-them mentality, which may cause conflict with the wider society. The leader is extremely protected and does not give interviews. ( Charles ) The leader is not held accountable to any authority. ( Charles ) Unquestioning adulation is expected from the followers. It is obvious as to why Harry preferred to have his FREEDOM from such an ABNORMAL and a PRISON - LIKE lifestyle. Kate may have decided to do likewise. Over one thousand people followed the Peoples Temple CULT led by Jim Jones and ended up DEAD. DO NOT FOLLOW THIS CULT OR ANY DANGEROUS CULT. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The so-called English royals represent an old cult-like institution with a very bad history and the following words would apply to it. Racist, Incest, Adultery, Immorality, Tyranny, Brutality, Genocide, Slavery, Theft, Dysfunctional, Aloof, Extremely Secretive, Irrelevant, Suffocating Formality, Abnormal and a Prison - Like Lifestyle. Edward's and Simpson's allegiance to Hitler. Andrew / Epstein and Charles / Jimmy Savile. Diana's arranged / forced marriage to Charles and his horrible treatment of her. Philip and his affairs, Anne divorced. Andrew Divorced, Charles divorced. Andrews association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He visited Epstiens island 26 times so it is said while investigating Epstiens. Henry VIII divorced two of his wives and the other two were BEHEADED-! Henry VIII was responsible for thousands of deaths. Hanged, Drawn and Quartered as well as Burning at the Stake were very evil ways to be killed. Charles was tried and executed for treason. William who carried out genocide in the north of England. American President Jefferson branded George a plundering tyrant.

If the royal family is not British due to the fact that they are descended from the foreign Anglo-Saxon settlers… well then millions of British citizens today are not British either, because millions of them are Anglo Saxon… You accuse the monarchy of being old and out of date, yet you argue that a person cannot be British if they are anglo Saxon… now THAT is definitely out of date. Hypocrisy to its greatest extent.

Republics have their own problems and costs. They have some checks and balances to limit power but given the populace electing a head of state does not guarantee a better navigation of statecraft . Perhaps more so because it turns it into another political system. Democracy is always in danger of descending into tyranny as Plato said. We have only to see how dictatorships can destroy another democracy with current events. A constitutional monarchy is one way to challenge alternative systems that concentrate power and personal gain for a few. Perhaps some objective analysis and comparison of different systems than trashing one form without such a comparison, would yield a better understanding of the inner workings of what is being trashed!

My thoughts exactly. I never liked democracy- when everyone thinks they are entitled to power. Everything has “owners”. Power is no different. The UK will remember when they had a royal family to represent them. And they will regret for abolishing them if that ever happens.
@TieranFreedman

You make some good points. I agree that it's overoptimistic to assume that switching to a republic would automatically make everything fairer and more democratic. The US is a Republic and ranks lower in democracy rankings than the UK. That said, it's hard to deny that there are a lot of troubling issues surrounding the monarchy, and the more I learn about it the more problems there seems to be. While you say that a constitutional monarchy challenges systems that concentrate power, ours also centralises power in the Prime Minister, making our PM more domestically powerful than most others in Europe. And some of the royals are able to effectively veto laws that negatively impact their financial interests. At least an elected head of state could be more accountable, and couldn't dodge things like the Freedom of Information act so easily. In response to your final point, since the interview was with the CEO of republic, the story was why he thinks we should abolish the monarchy. I am, however, producing a video featuring an interview with a monarchist. It was supposed to be done immediately after this one, but it was very delayed because of Covid, so will be out early next year. It doesn't go too much into the inner workings of different types of systems, but does explore the reasons a monarchist has for being a monarchist. So I hope you enjoy it when it comes out 🙂

@@TieranFreedman the UK has a collective government system not a presidential one so even though the PM is very powerful they can't exercise that power without significant support from the cabinet and parliament and if they do they're quickly booted out of office even just after a month as what happened to Lizz Truss.

Abuse and concentration of power is challenged by legitimizing concentration and abuse for a family and their relatives? what kind of logic gymnastic is that? Constitutionalism doesn't cohere with monarchy for the rule of law isn't the supreme rule there. What one can call Britannia is "soft aristocracy". And it isn't just about governance either, it is about the symbolism of individual liberty, that what I and my offspring can aspire is at least symbolically equal to the offspring of some psychopathic power-abusing bureaucrat.

I wonder what would happen with events such as the Trooping of the Colours? Would it still happen, with the President taking over the role of the King or Quenn? Or would that be one of a handful of times each year the royal family is rolled out of hiding? Would the Changing of the Guard continue in it's present form, with the exception that it's much more ceremonial than it currently is? Does the royal family's possessions simplay all get handed back, or do they get to retain one homestead for that immediate family? Reducing the households would greatly impact the costs of retaining some of the sites as tehy would need to be renovated more completely than they are currently. I also think that the tourism dollars might actually increase if visitors have more access to Buckingham Palace, Kensignton, and Windsor if the royal family is no longer in residence there.

I recall a UK TV program (if anyone knows it's title please let me know as I'd love to find a copy) some years ago that started with the (fictional) announcement that "The House of Lords has voted, by a narrow margin, to abolish the monarchy". It then went through the various steps that would be needed to accomplish this. Near the end was an announcement that the Commissioners who were charged with overseeing the process had announced that "there is nothing to stop Anne Windsor, the former Princess Royal, from standing for President. Ladbrokes immediately had her at 10 to 1 on."

I'm all for royal families. Royal families keep a chronological history of events thru their lineage which the people have access to in their memories of events they've experienced personally , as they grow up with each member of the monarchy. They also serve as a "standard" of behavior. Which is quite difficult to maintain, but supports an attitude of order that promotes peace. It's not an easy role, and certainly not the kind of life I would want. But I believe that royal families should be kept in high regard as they play an important part in society. As for the book “God is a republican” I’ve never read such rubbish, I will say when we were short of toilet paper During the 2020 lockdown💩💩💩💩💩 that book was surprisingly durable and flushable. 💩💩💩💩💩 I don’t know why people don’t just use that book instead of buying toilet paper as that’s all it’s good for, wiping your backside. Also if you know religious scripture, satan was the angel who tried to get god removed from the throne of heaven, now why was a president sat on a throne, because he is a king not a president, A KING👑 So who was the republican? Oh yes of course, Satan, the patron saint of republicans, that’s why I call them the Red Devils. So that’s another thing republicans hopelessly use as a good piece of literature, a book that speaks the same amount of rubbish as they do. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN AND LONG LIVE KING CHARLES. GOD SAVE THE MONARCHY, LONG LIVE THE MONARCHY, LONG MAY THEY REIGN, LONG MAY IT LIVETH ON, DOWN WITH REPUBLICANS. MAY THEY STAY A DISGRACE. AND LEAVE THIS LAND. HAVE FUN KISSING THE ASS OF SATAN THE LORD YOU SERVE EVERY TIME YOU BAD MOUTH THE MONARCHY. YOU DISGRACE.

Who has the authority to abolish the sovereign? I suspect it would be illegal to abolish the monarchy, just like the law didn't allow Charles I to be tried, so they resorted to a mock-trial and murdered him. This video seems to demonstrate a pop-culture misperception of reality, which has been propagated by that which spewed forth from the French Revolt. I suggest having a clear understanding of the merits of monarchy (they exist) before choosing to throw the monarchy away like so much trash. To let the legacy of French Revolters do your thinking for you, is not wise. It's extremely ironic to follow after radicalism, and then to say it's not a radical position because Europe has already submitted itself to radicalism. The world is falling apart, due to the nature of democratic forces. What yall should desire, is a male sovereign who does his job rather than just being a mascot. What yall should not desire, is to plunge into the Globalist Conspiracy Against Humanity. A good king will prevent Britain from being the dystopia that the Globalist Order is certainly going to be. Based on his parrot-like rhetoric, the anti-royal guy sounds very naive, and like he worships some ideal as if it is God. That false god is going to destroy England, if yall let it. The day may come when the British Monarchy is the only thing that can strive back against the Globalist Tyranny which is to come and is already desperately striving to assert itself against Humanity. I sure hope yall don't take the monarchy for granted; that could have devastating consequences for the whole world (maybe, maybe not; alot of things can happen)... of course, that thing where yall are now leaving the throne open to Romanist (Papist) infiltration, needs to be fixed.

I think there’s a place for royalty but not in the constitution and not publicly funded. For example in Greece, Austria and Italy some people still follow their royal families and of course the UK royals should keep their family properties and traditions but they shouldn’t be able to amend any laws or have any authority or meet regularly with the head of state or be funded by the British people. We should have a president as our head of state and the Windsor-Mountbattens can be a historical and mystical noble family like they are now. I say this because I see lots of people resent them etc… which is unfair, they were born into money but so what? As long as they don’t need to be sustained by the rest of the country I don’t see a problem, but I do see a problem with tax going to people holding their office because their mother/father held it. It’s our national tradition, and we should cherish that, but it shouldn’t be our future or the basis of our constitution.

The whole system needs changing but until the population wake up, the feudal system will stay. Everyone should be taught politics and what the parties represent or else we will still be working and subsidising the rich and privileged. It is obscene how we pay for them through our taxes while a lot of surfs can't get on the housing ladder or afford a holiday. A lot of good comments are made about the Queen but if she cared the taxes would not be up to an all time high and food and fuel so expensive. They are taking the mickey. Those palaces and houses have been paid for by us and taxing the rich especially the rich unworking like the royals and fuel company owners paying minimum wage could subsidise good quality food and low cost fuel and insulation. It would pay properly for the NHS. Instead the current deal is work pay taxes fund the nhs but you won't get an ambulance but pay for nursing care with all the money you've earned. Yeah fair point. I'm definitely grateful for our National Health Service. It has flaws, but it's one of the best things about Britain in my opinion. The education thing used to be true, but the government increased tuition fees in to £9,000 per year a while back so it isn't anymore. The way the debt is repaid is less brutal than in the USA, though. But still, the monarchy is pretty archaic. I disagree. As good as a codified constitution aesthetically sounds, you have to consider the fact when a legal constitution is signed into law at a particular point in time then every subsequent generation who come after that constitution are essentially shackled to a constitution/system of government. So if future generations want to adjust the system of governance to be able to effectively solve the issues of their day then they can't do that if their chained to a constitution that they have no say over that is written by people who are long gone. Codified constitutions sound good but ultimately such legal documents always cause more problems than they solve. A possible compromise is to perhaps have a list of bill of rights which sets a moral legal standard for that country to uphold. Technically speaking, we do kind of have that we the English bill of rights however I do agree that we do need a second bill of rights to remind the people and ruling classes/institutions alike where the moral legal line stands. Therefore what the UK has at present is actually waay better than what most other countries like the US have as we have a uncodified constitution which allows for people within their respective eras of time to change without chaining people to outdated systems of governance.

The Monarchy symbolises what Britain actually is. It is the living history of our great nation, by removing the monarchy, we cause more problems than good. The monarchy provides stability and removing it would remove that stability. Yes, the Royal family do not have to pay taxes but that didn't stop Queen Elizabeth II paying them from 1992 and onwards. Yes, the Queen did pay taxes as she offered to do so and continued doing so just like any other tax payer. The counterarguments to some of these republican views are on the royal family website itself. Queen Elizabeth, actually did a lot for this country and the world and i would hope that King Charles carries this on. Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth II, loved by many.

As an American living in the UK, I can definitely appreciate the urge to a republic. And just for fun I've contemplated what form a British republican government might take. What would it be called? One would have to call it the Republic of the British Isles or something like that. It would hardly do to have a Republic of the United Kingdom, without a king/queen to go with it. Or let Northern Ireland go its own way and call it the Republic of Great Britain. Or let Scotland go its own way and then you'd have the Republic of England and Wales. Imagine the flag! On the other hand, no, no, let's not. The government could take a more rational form (the current Westminster system sucks big time), but the monarchy is the country's saving grace. And what's wrong with a nobility? The Duke of Norfolk in his magnificent castle in Arundel can't go around beating people over the head any longer, like the nobles of long time ago. And what do you call it if you take away the property of all these nobles and royals? It's called "theft" never mind how they got in the first place (happened back in 1066, in case you were wondering). Take it away and you're just as bad as the Spaniards who conquered Latin America and stole all the land that belonged to the Incan and Mayan empires. And if the government can do that to the royals and nobles, then they can do it to you just as easily. There's a reason why there is a _right_ to property. Rule of law applies to everyone. Or should. And does maintaining the royals cost too much? Check out CGP Grey's interesting video on the subject: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mM6pjMqfzc6vdqs.html

this is one of the most american things ive heard. Imagine my children are born doctors just like hers born kings? Does that make any sense to you?? Would my children make creditable doctors?? More so, you pay them taxes and them ask you to bow in front of them!

That's really a pretty poor and illogical argument! You clearly didn't learn any principles of logic in your education. And for the record - the royal children are brought up, coached and taught to understand and how to perform their duties over many years. This is not a reason why monarchy is necessary but yours is one of quite a few stupid and poorly-presented arguments on this page.

I fully support your republican cause, down with the tyrant's but how do you logically get to their land not legally being theirs? The crown estates are their private property is it not?

"No monarchies have ever been brought back democratically" He's obvs never heard of Charles II after the death of Richard Cromwell So many inaccuracies with this guy. He gives his movement less credence with everything he says

Will you research, please, how much taxpayers burden be reduced, if the monarchy is abolished? They should all follow Harry's example and step down. Yet, every country and society will have social issues. The Commonwralth nations can cancel the membership, too.

I submit that without the live role play of the monarchy and royals, and with a civil government only, England would be as boring as the rest of the countries in the world.
