Major studios being too scared to make animated shows that are actually mature and compelling with good writing is exactly why animation is still looked down upon as "for kids," and why anime is dominating the animation landscape.

Yeah because japan is very respectful towards the medium (Except for the animators they are basically slaves at mappas gunpoint nowadays). But like devilman crybaby, oddtaxi, parasyte, tatami galaxy, foolie coolie and all these amazing shows have investment in them. They bang because people wanted to make them and have respect for the medium. They had ideas, and america hates new ideas. Alan moore was right, people are canibalizing the own work they've made decades ago.

The work you're doing has inspired beyond anything I thought possible. I've always loved animation, from ghibli to worthikids to Smallbu to midnight gospel to Isle of dogs, etc etc etc. But this has made me actively pursue my own work, I've started experimenting with a premise about isolation, based on my own experiences with the social difficulty that comes with autism, as well as issues with sensuality and sexuality. I want to create something that can close the gap between perceptions and has a genuine emotional investiture. I've never been super financially stable but your views on resources were enlightening, I'm using free trial after free trial on loads of fake accounts to make my work and I intend to make it amazing. You're a legend and an amazing soul, thanks, I hope to someday work alongside project city when it inevitably becomes huge.

This is weird. You cant draw sharp teeth? Thas not okay bud. Draw whatever you want. It is meant for that
@StudioHannah
@StudioHannah 2 жыл бұрын
Weeeeeird… my mom didn’t like a lot of the things I drew, and commented that any time she saw me drawing weird stuff, but she still let me draw them. It was a conservative household but we kids still had freedom to express ourselves. Throwing out a sketchbook and not even letting you draw sharp teeth is next level strict. They probably have some beliefs that are important to them, and throwing out your sketchbooks is their way of “protecting” you from something they’re scared of. Don’t hate them for it, as they likely care about you a lot, but know that they’re humans and you’re also a human, and you’re your own self, and they won’t be able to control what you do forever. As long as you’re not doing something actually wrong, do you. And even the books they threw out were PRACTICE for you. You don’t have the sketches any more, but you have the experience. Have you ever (calmly and respectfully, so they don’t push back hard) asked what it is about those drawings that they take issue with? Ask with an air of trying to understand rather than of confronting them. You may learn something interesting about them, and that might help you later to form a good reason why you think otherwise. Knowledge is power.

What Andra said about abandonment issues really hit me deeply, like I remember when my mom left me in another country without telling me or saying goodbye. It was a while ago so I didn’t think it still effected me this much because I don’t think about it often, but it hurts. Even though our relationship is better now and I love her, it’s not the same like before and it probably nvr will be. I’m so glad black creators have more opportunities to tell their stories like this, “I know I’m not the only one“, thank you. This stuff is so inspiring! Most shows and movies nowadays get lost in the masses of studio notes and separate departments until the heart of the thing is completely diluted. It’s nearly impossible to make truly great art when hundreds of people are working on a project (and thus few people actually have enough influence to express their own creative voice) and budgets are so high that studios can’t afford to do anything risky. With technology getting more and more accessible, and with our ability to connect with people all around the world, we have an opportunity to have smaller teams working on lower budget projects that allow everyone to have a say in the creative vision and can afford to make art that might not be an easy sell. I think projects like this are the beginnings of an indie revolution that could make the filmmaking (and general art-making) process truly collaborative and personal. I just hope I can be a part of it!

Bro I am loving these types of vids. Project City seems like an amazing idea and I hope it does amazing. It seems like a great launching platform for those who want to create without the stifle of big studios.

i wanted to watch this whole thing but I'm like in a 30 minute food break for my dnd session and i already feel like bawling just at minute 3:49 i can't LOLL the layers of the passion and need to be heard without any more corporate suppression, plus the individual experiences that gave you all the stories to share today is just too much lol. TOO MUCH I'm gonna cry hahahahahaha. I really want to be a part of project city and watch your guys' animations so bad. I hope I see this come to fruition

Damn Ethan, that stuff about the things you went through with your step father hit so close for me because I have experienced basically the same things but in my 20s. And I am still trying to recover my self confidence which was utterly destroyed, and get rid of plenty of anxieties I have developed back then.

Animation has no boundaries and that's why it can mould art and movement and sound and colours all at once and put the focus on the story and character with such a stronger impact, and I'm so happy to see people who understand it as the higher art form than what general media uses it for. I am in the midst of having to decide on a career and this makes me think there is a future to pursuing art and animation. I really wanna push and partake in this project, as I feel it'll be the thing to finally motivate me to go off the deep end into animation.

Man this was such a wholesome and deep but really well thought out project and video, instantly for me was so inspiring to see this amazing artist just joining in and coming together to make some Dope stuff, I really appreciate and look forward to the results. I do agree with Ethan that pewds would do an amazing job at voice acting, and man Ethan thank you a lot to be so open to all of us and thank you so share this stories that are so personal that I think that will resonate with ppl really well, and I´m kinda speechless to say the least this is amazing cannot wait so see more of the progress. Good luck for you guys, everyone on the team !!!!

i'm so interested in the process of your project. I'm not that professional at drawing but i really love writing scripts for animated series, i have already 2 projects on which i'm working and I'm hoping that I can someday show the world my storys. it really means a lot to me and watching you in the brainstorming process and how the story is getting forward ist really interesting to see. to be honest my english is not good enough to understand the whole information your videos contain when I watch the first time, but that doesn't matter because I like rewatching them anyways :D i'm really looking forward to seeing updates on this project 🙌🏻

i have heard many artists say they were never very proud of the work theyve done on the major titles they worked on because it didnt feel like them. This is what has kept me from pursuing professional work and wanting to keep my art for me. I just figured do what i love and there will be an audience for it.
