i grew up poor, so i didn’t really get to join interest classes. also, my parents emphasised a lot the importance of education to get a good job and a good life, so i spent most of my student life focusing on my studies. now that i’m an adult and have a stable life/job/income, i’m so happy that i finally get to explore and pick up hobbies 13-year-old me have always wanted to try. i’ve picked up working out, skateboarding, pottery, and crocheting :)

Hobbies help, but therapy helped me better. Luckily i have nothing too serious. Therapy gave me guidance and better understanding of myself. Hobbies won't help as therapy does. They both cost money, but hobbies can easily lead you into overconsumption and overspending. Talking from experience. Video topic is very good. I liked it.

that's very true! ty for sharing that perspective. my therapy too has helped me in ways that hobbies cannot, but also vise versa. thanks for watching!

This has been on my mind for some time now. Started ballet in my 20ies and it's such a unique experience for me. As a child I never really connected on a personal level to any hobby and as soon as someone added any expectation to it I quit. I only ever really stuck with creative writing and that turned into my side hustle while also went to art school. So already I've turned two creative outlets into some sort of "carreer" and it changed my relationship to these hobbies quite a lot. Ballet is in a totally different dimension. I am way too old to ever benefit from dancing on a professional level and for the first time in my life I do something for the pure joy of doing it. I want to learn, I want to improve but there's nothing to gain beyond that learning curve itself. It's so liberating.

A thing I got as a college student that in retrospect was truly special, was a program that allowed adult learners to pursue their first or additional college degree at my school. The minimum cap was 25 but I had some senior citizens in my classes. For them, learning was a hobby and it was something I've kept a hold of as an adult. They were the embodiment of "never too old to learn." I probably pissed off a bunch of people who would wistfully talk about always wanting to learn X, Y, and Z and I said "Then why don't you?" They'd grumble away about it being too hard.

I have a few adult hobbies. One for mental (reading) one physical (roller skating) one creative (cross stitch, embroidery, and painting), and social (videos games in discord chats). I don’t do these everyday, sometimes a few times a month. But it keeps me from being bored and depressed.

Ooof I feel like that balance of social media and low stakes hobby enjoyment is a hard one! Especially when we are socialized to see personal value as connected to performance and productivity. I think finding stuff that I knew I was going to be “bad” have been the funnest hobbies to pick up, because their is something really cool in giving yourself permission to fail and learn without any pressure.

Maybe you should consider changing the name of your video… But I suppose you’re worried “how hobbies can benefit your health and compliment therapy” might not get you as many clicks. I wish more people valued honesty over attention.

i talk about it in the video where hobbies do not replace traditional therapy and treatment and go into detail about the mental health benefits that they provide. that was the main message of my video, and agreed, it could be made more clear. appreciate the feedback!
