You Need Creative Discipline

Discipline Is EVERYTHING For Creatives. Art inspiration and motivation are overrated. As a creative, you need discipline. It's okay if you quit for 2 months, or 2 years, but get back on the creative path and KEEP GOING! If you do something enough times, over an extended period of time you WILL get better.
This video is a bit of a rant, but I wanted to share my thoughts on motivation and inspiration for creatives. We all are guilty from time to time for relying too much on motivation and inspiration for our creative process. The truth is, those are fleeting. The best way to grow an artist business, or become a better artist is to rely on discipline, patience, and consistency. It takes TIME to build an art business, a creative practice, a social media following, etc.
Regardless if you're simply interested in art, (or something else creative) and you have a growing creative side hustle, or are a full time working artist, you likely struggle with creative blocks. Having these creative blocks are completely normal, and part of any creative process.
The key is to keep going. Keep painting, keep filming, keep working! If you wait for the inspiration or the motivation to make better or more art, you're missing out.
Being able to convert motivation and inspiration into discipline is so critical in elevating yourself as a creative. There is no short cut for doing the work. Showing up to the studio and getting it done. Showing up to the gym and working out. Regardless if you feel compelled to create or not.
Emotions come and go for everyone. Being able to recognize that pattern, and push through the creative blocks and KEEP GOING are what separate the goods from the greats. If you do something enough times, over an extended period of time you WILL get better. You will develop a strong discipline to your creative process, and therefore your work. Take 2 years off? Don't beat yourself up... get back on the horse and keep creating!
It's not about how often you stop, but how often you begin again.
The world needs more creatives now more than ever. If you're reading this, keep going. Your art is good enough, and you should share it with the world.
Hopefully this rant makes sense? Leave some love in the comments section below for fellow creatives.
With gratitude,
Ginny

Thank you. This hit an unexpectedly deep nerve for me. After quitting music college, music teaching, ballet, painting, a sewing business etc because of creative blocks, imposter syndrome and health issues, I've felt pretty low creatively for a long time. I recently bought an industrial sewing machine and took up leather working. It's been brutally difficult! This video is deeply encouraging so thank you for making it.

Tremendously wise, pragmatic, and simple. Showing up consistently is the key, the answer--especially when you don't feel like it. It creates both the art and artist/creator. I love your videos; there are HeLlA lEgIt. You save us a lot of trouble and frustration and make us better people as a result. :)

I fell in love with you when you were nice to the spider. ❤️‍🔥👁️❤️‍🔥 Thank you 🙏🏻 They are complete staggering miracles. They are there for you. All life is there for you, part of you. I love you ❤ All the little children of Gaia, all the children of universes unknown spin their webs 🕸️ in the morning sun weaving their nets across our world. It’s good not to be alone. ❤ Yes! Just do it! I have a ton of work and writing I’m afraid to have people see. But I have been working on it. My problem is not creative blocks but I can’t block the creativity long enough to finish or present or promote. THATS what I have been working on. It’s a fricking Amazon/ocean it’s never ending. ❤ I see through the eyes of the spider. I’m a weaver of the reflections of beauty, gems of the web. That’s how it is done in my world to see through the eyes by the webs all life weaves invisibly as we move through life.❤

This is absolutely precious. What a wonderful and intriguing soul you must be. 😭💜 Everything you wrote touched my heart and spirit so much, it honestly brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. 🥹 I had to read it twice. The world is truly a more beautiful place with a soul like you, here. 💖 This was like a little sparkly “gem of the web” left behind to gleam love and happiness upon whoever finds it. ✨🫶🏼✨ Also, I share your feeling on putting your art (heart) and yourself out there. It’s been my biggest “obstacle.” I hope you break free soon. So much love to you. 🫶🏼✨

I found that something that helps with this is to work on a different creative element of your project, like if you illustrate every day and are bored, switch it up by making a blog post or email newsletter about your process or motivation to draw, your dreams or maybe work on a quick KZfaq short, etc. thanks for sharing! -Kali

I wanted to make sure to comment after you mentioned you almost didn't post it, or possibly thought about deleting it. I hope you never do. I needed to hear every word of this, and tbh I'm saving it to remind myself whenever I'm feeling the lack of discipline is hard. I love your analogies so much, I've been working out for the past 2 years and was really crap at the routine the first year and saw basically nothing. In just a few months more recently I've been dedicated and consistent in the way you described with 3 days then it slowly grew, both in days and time duration, and now I'm already seeing results, I'm getting more motivated/consistent naturally where it isn't hard to go like idk how to describe it but I WANT to work out even if it's just a short one, more than I don't, and hearing that link to art really hit home for me. And I instantly picked up my tablet and started doing art. It was hard I wasn't in the mood but I'm already happier that I picked up the pencil. Thank you

I have two cents to add, I way that I recovered a bit of my motivation (for my biology degree, not art block, but I felt very identified when I watched a video about art block, even if they're different subjects, so it may help) How I Make Myself Study When I’m Lazy (it's not discipline) from Elizabeth Filips and How to Stop Quitting Everything You Start from Tina Huang. Particularly the first one, it's a lot about self-reflection, I once applied the tips on that video to a paint, and geez, the results were faster than if I had sat down and painted straight away. And they helped me regain focus on my tasks, because I got back a bit of motivation. The videos from Elizabeth Filips helped me hang in there when my lack of motivation went on years, they're about productivity, more directed towards studying, but I really recommend them. More then anything, I recommend reflecting about where the lack of motivation comes from.

I loved it! Love your humor too! Thanks for the inspiration! Sometimes I feel like I am not being thankful for my gift when I just don't feel like creating. Lots of distractions and frustrations/interruptions to "my plans" for creating that day, etc. Is it odd that I find peace and satisfaction just sharpening my pastel pencils on my mini planer? (random thoughts coming out on your page.) Once again, thanks for the video and I'll look forward to the next one I watch.
