Manikandan talks about his next film, Kadaisi Vivasayi (The Last Farmer), and why Rajinikanth would be great for the lead role. He talks about how he uses realism as a tool, and how a director needs time to confirm his talents. He says you shouldn’t make issues too strong, and you shouldn’t have only entertainment, without any message. He says not everyone will get the layers in a movie. He says a director can create engagement value through image, sound, a melody. In a visual medium, he says you have to think of images rather than dialogue. He says he won’t allow anyone to affect the core story, not even the producer. He says a lot of films don’t need background music, and talks about the Indian tradition of using music right when the emotion begins, not just to underline it. He talks about lensing and colour palettes. He analyses why he is considered uncompromising. He talks about keeping a hero’s image in mind, about the use of film festivals. He says doors open more easily for commercial filmmakers.

@@bqrius_pictures Rajinikanth took off to the masala route back in the 80's and he stuck to the image he created, much worse since the 90's. Nothing great came out of those hypermasculine roles played by him. Yes, he has a following but I enjoy KB's movies and the likes.

This will be long, pardon me. But I feel that the length is justified, as I want to share many thing about this interview. First of all, great questions by Mr.Bharadwaj rangan. Subtitles (I believe rangan did that as well) was so apt. Now coming to the coherency in which the interview was sketched, it was 100% perfect. To give an example, just see the pacing of questions, starting from, how Mr.Manikandan views movies, how he selects his script, his view about award function and then getting on to the technical part of music, palette , lens selection and then on to the real time issues like producers, theatres and finally touching base on his upcoming project. Without flattering, I would say this is the epitome for forming an interview. The interviewer is there to learn the interviewee, his work along with the viewers, asking him the right questions (as against "which movie you like the most, whom do you like (or) tell about Ilayaraja when you worked in Kutramae thandanai etc) and then getting a perspective of his work rather than showing off what he knows etc. One thing to say is, I revere andavan kattalai as his best movie so far for its perfect amalgamation of art and the commercial aspect of it, without absolutely compromising on the core theme of the story (i.e no middle man). Not sure how many have appreciated this, just see the relationship between A.venkatesh and Vijay sethupathy, between Rithika and his mom and finally between the vigilance office and Vijay sethupathy. Humanity prevails on all these, but they are not focussed to get the attention of the viewers. This is how life goes. There are no highlights in it. One more thing. I see lots of people (5600 views so far) seeing this video, but there are only 260 likes. This is not fair. Lots of things go behind these interviews, right from getting appointment, paying the guest, camera, editing etc, without getting any money from the viewers. I'm sure that atleast 70% out of 5600 would have liked it but only minuscule liked it. Pls enjoy these work and appreciate it as it deserves much more. Great job Mr.Bharadwaj rangan. Thanks a ton for your great interviews (I wish we can have a separate youtube session from you on international movies you like, any script you have in mind etc) and keep the great stuff happening. Regards, Anantha Narayanan

Great conversation.. someone who has a great respect for his craft and the audience. He was so right about audience just relating to some scenes in the film.. when i was around the same age as the elder kid in the film is when pizzas were in the fad in the small town of guntur.. obviosly, they didnt fit the pocket money(if there was any) .. but it was my grand mother who has come to my rescue to give that additional money for the pizza.. His stories are simple, real and universal...

To me, Vjs led me to Manikandan ... I have seen Kaaka Muttai years back but as a Dhanush house production ... I haven't seen Kuttrame Dhandanai (I choose to watch this over Vjs movies incl. Jawan and even Animal now) ... Aandavan Kattalai is a good movie (loved Vjs smile at the very end) ... Coming to Kadaisi Vivasayi, this is a very beautiful movie made with real villagers ... The movie didn't require Vjs or Yogi Babu ever ... while I would appreciate Rajinikanth playing normal roles, thank God, he didn't come on board. The main lead drew a lot more respect from many of us ... that suffices. May Manikandan make many more of these outstanding movies. Again while I appreciate him wanting to make commercial movies, I rather watch many more of his real movies. There's enough to do commercial movies.

Great interview, was looking for it after your fabulous interviews with Nithilan and Maanagaram director. All fans of good cinema dig out KZfaq for his very elaborate multipart interview around the time when Kaakka muttai was released, one could tell his passion and extra ordinary dedication in lots of aspects and details in his film making. Liked every bit of the interview but somehow didn't agree completely that only Rajini could do or the real farmer.though he is capable of bringing out something different or new from RK, no other alternatives in his place sounded little non convincing

Logically speaking, the preset pallet notions are very subjective to human emotion and space. One can’t generalise it. I believe that what Mr. Mani is said is his own observation. Having a great insight on Color pallets Mr. Rogers Deakins have more stronger Color impact over his films. But This impact alienates the emotional participation of spectators most of the time,Knowing this Mr Deakins balances his shots with an organic flow of compositions, using various texture of properties present around the set In brief the metaphorical understanding of the given time and space are more important than the preset Color palates
