Microsoft has drawn an arbitrary line and declared that PCs and laptops with processors from only a few years ago (even 2018) won't work with Windows 11. This is crazy and Microsoft should be ashamed of itself.
Windows 11 won't support Intel Core chips like the i3, i5, i7, etc that are older than the 8th generation or AMD Ryzen 3/5/7 processors before the 3xxx series. The Ryzen 3 3xxx only came out in 2019!

No. Windows 8 was. When it was harder to use and did less that win 7 I only used it to learn about it. I certainly don't use it if I have work to do. And I have spent so much time helping people who have been stuck with win 10 and all the problems it has created. They say "back to the future". I have been doing more work on older systems recently. For example because "dos box" or similar can be run on many machines including android I have gone back to writing a significant chunk of my code for DOS. Compatibility is more important than features.

What I find interesting and sad is that when I ran the tool, I was told I needed a TPM module (actually it didn't say that - I had to hunt for that info). And I don't *have* a TPM chip, but I have a slot for it. So, without knowing what *other* thing is missing for the upgrade, I could have bought the TPM chip, installed it, then relaunched and THEN got told I needed secure boot. Then I'd have risked literally all my data on my disk just to convert the partition... And then, only THEN, would I have realized I had NO WAY to upgrade because of my 7 year old CPU which still works perfectly fine on my machine. Could the tool not just have a checklist instead of a "one-at-a-time" error? That's just... evil.

When I saw the degree of violation of my choices and my privacy I had to either agree to or be unable to use the new computer. I simply put the computer back in the box and returned it to the store. If everyone did like I did seeing the crap microsoft was forcing on us, your wish for computers just having enough processing power, HD space and RAM would be a reality -and people not Microsoft would be determining how computers work. Unfortunately I reckon 99% of consumers have no problem with Microsoft et al. behavior. And with 99% of approval Microsoft and the rest of them will only keep getting more brazen to the point they will even decide not how the computer runs but what the color of computer is or in what rooms of your apartment you will be able to keep your computer. Sure are a lot of restrictions for what honestly just looks like a reskin, and very small tweak of Windows 10. Not like I'm bothered, I can relax knowing windows won't force an upgrade on me and wipe my hard drive on a spur of the moment brute-force install like it tried to do with 10 back when I used 7 (Which I would still be using if my hardware supported it, but sadly doesn't so I'm stuck with this unstable mess that crashes every other day). Still, 11 looks like it's barely a change from 10, and yet requires such a specific and limited criteria to run that they're basically going to have another Vista on their hands.

Windows 11 is quite nice actually. I was a Windows insider on the dev channel, so I got (or was forced) to test Windows 11 despite my hardware not meeting any of the requirements. I can definitely see this beinga Vista situation, a really nice OS, but held back by its requirements. Whats weird tho, is that Windows 11 works better than Windows 10 for me! And again, I don't meet any of the requirements for it. This feels more like Microsoft wanting to push hardware security ahead. As for the proccessor requirements, I've read thats just to make Windows a better experience. If the drivers can be installed via an update, then you'll almost always be running on the latest drivers. Currently, the only drivers that do that for me are Razer Synapse (for my Razer keyboard and mouse), but I can definitely see this being nice if I ever upgrade my computer

The CPU is an old i5 that is fine for general tasks. The SSD greatly extended battery life, and the old, slow HD was a dog that slowed the entire system, and even with 8 gb ram, W10 bogged the system so badly it was frustrating. I highly recommend converting old computers to Linux as they age out of the Windows bloatware.

I've only switched to Windows 10 from Window 7 (64-bit) a few months ago. I found the transition boring and annoying, as the W7-64 worked perfectly on all three PCs in my homes. I found and I find W10-64, very bad, both as an interface and as "modern applications". Applications that I have proceeded to sweep away with no regrets. I had to upgrade to W10 because some video editing programs and some software production programs could no longer work efficiently with W7. I don't even dream of upgrading to W11. When and if the need arises, I will probably switch to Linux. I feel like the TPM requirement may be a way around the lack of processor serial numbers. Remember that fiasco 20 years ago? MS has been itching to identify machines for Windows Activation, and I think this is how they will try and pull it off. "Trusted Computing" is only as trustworthy as the company controlling it, and MS recently just admitted to actually signing malware and messing up. TPM would never have protected you from this because it had a valid, legally signed signature. It's flawed, doomed, and not only that, TPM has already been demonstrated to be easily cracked. Gary explained it's almost criminal, but I agree, and maybe this should be looked into, however in the end, MS truthfully could do whatever they want, but so can customers, we can chose to leave them in the dust and not buy machines with it, customers could flock to Apple, and the funny thing is, it's like Microsoft and Apple switched places, because now I see Apple still supporting some 2013 machines.

Why would I switch to something with inferior specs for its price just because I can't run Windows 11? For real, you can get a lot more powerful PC for the price of a Mac, so if I were to buy a new computer I would go with a PC, and if I were to go with a prebuilt one it would come with Windows anyway although I would also install Ubuntu on it as it's a really easy to use Linux distro (so easy my mom learned how to use it basically without any help from me) that's in some ways a lot better than Windows or Mac OS, and it's good to have something besides Windows (or Mac OS, although Apple really has a long history of doing their best to prevent people from installing other operating systems on their devices) for some things anyway... I know it was a joke BTW, just pointing out how ridiculous the idea of switching to a Mac to "stick it to Microsoft" really is, and also remember that Apple is even worse about supporting older devices and gives you a lot less control over your device than Microsoft does 😉 So if you're angry about Microsoft's latest BS you should be even angrier at Apple for theirs, not to mention their constant efforts at preventing right to repair laws and also doing their best to prevent recycling of components from their devices etc etc.

@@Warutteri Apple did try to prevent people from putting anything else than what they sell/make available on their hardware. Didn't work. Nowadays putting Linux on a MacBook is not much different than putting it on a PC. Doing so, IMO, gives you amdesktop with better functionality and at least comparable performance. You just won't get the OSX native applications. For me at least that wouldn't be any loss, given what's available natively on Linux and what you get running with Wine.
@Warutteri

@@a0flj0 Well, even allowing for that their computers are ridiculously expensive, hard to/impossible to repair (the newest laptops at least have chips in them that are keyed to the specific machine and cannot be changed if they break, Louis Rossman has great videos on many of these things), the laptops have bad overheating issues leading to throttling and short chiplife, they are doing their best to fight _any and all_ right to repair legislation, charge absolutely ridiculous amounts for repairs with the intention of forcing people to just buy a new machine and regularly shred old machines they get their hands on to prevent any chip extraction of working chips (and making even element retrieval, like gold, silver, copper, etc, very difficult if not downright impossible). Given all that there really is absolutely no reason to get a Mac, other than vanity, not knowing much about computers or laziness (as those are the the three groups I've noticed buying Apple computers, people who want the Apple logo because it's a status symbol, people who don't understand much about computers and people who are just lazy and want a computer that's so idiot proof that it doesn't need any of the setup that a PC often needs) when you can get a PC (with better specs for the same money, and often significantly better specs) and use a virtual machine to run MacOS if you absolutely need Mac apps. I really wish more people were aware of Apples anti consumer actions because they're literally paving the way for people basically renting not only their software but also their hardware if they get their way, not to mention you're paying a ridiculous premium just to have an apple logo on a lackluster machine. Giving Apple money is the same as funding anti right to repair legislation, funding the move towards losing the ownership of the tech we buy and funding the move towards nice looking but in a technical sense badly designed machines and I for one would would never ever buy any Apple products just because my morals would not let me, I cannot in good conscience give money to a company doing their best to destroy consumer rights, repairability and recyclability of tech... Just can't, and I would urge anyone who reads this to do their research (nothing I mentioned is exactly a secret, just not reported by major news sources thanks to Apple's lobbying) and making the IMHO only right decision of not supporting the company with a single penny if at all possible.

Not disagreeing about Apple with the headphones, the adapter, the phone charger. They say it saves the planet from carbon emissions, which admittedly it does, but the only reason they actually did it (wasn’t for accessory sales, either, they sell third party chargers and headphones from competitors in their own physical and online stores right next to the Apple ones and often with cheaper prices than their own) was for the billions of dollars it saves in distribution costs-at their scale, the distribution costs are likely most of their operating expenses. But… BUT at least they continue to support hardware and devices for many years. Even their next updates, which haven’t even been rolled out yet, still work on devices going back many years. And those lines in the sand are clear when they happen (some fundamental hardware change), and the vast majority of those in the wild are physically on their last breath. Again, yes, they are far from perfect and not saying they are better in Microsoft in any regard-if anything it’s the opposite, right? When even the right hand of the devil supports devices 7+ years old, what are you doing MS?

The more moves Linux makes, or the more ground it takes, the more aggressively Microsoft will be to overwhelm the competition... Somebody should check on Microsoft and make sure everyone's okay in there, that there isn't some noxious gas leak in the building.

To hell with Microsoft! Linux will be more and more popular. I will be still using Linux even if it's deemed illegal to run it on a PC.

I don't know if MS changed anything since Gary's video was released, but I was able to do fresh install of Windows 11 on older systems (2016) without any issue. Upgrade from WIn10 to WIn11 wouldn't work, but fresh install was just fine.
