My week long review on the 2020 Honda Grom 125. I commuted on it in city traffic, some in town curvy roads, but didn't take it out on the highway as it tops out at just 62 mph. I put on just about 100 miles on it. Thank you Jay for letting me borrow your spare bike after your accident!

Grom is the ultimate learner bike, it was my first bike and it really helped with getting comfortable on 2 wheels and gain the confidence to play with how to shift properly and leaning/body position without getting into too much trouble. It really helped me understand the fundamentals of riding a motorcycle and transitioned effortlessly to my SV650. I bought a used grom to learn on and it was the best $1,500 ive ever spent....years of fun!!!

you make such a good point for people just starting off and people that don't hold the skills just yet to do things on bikes. Start off with a smaller bike and train yourself on EVERYTHING. Then slowly move up in cc and go from there. Too often you see smaller people like yourself get a bike that is just simply too much for them. Not saying thats what you did but a lot of people end up doing that cause if you ride a motorcycle you must go fast! Start small and work your way up.
@stupot35

When I was training I too relied too much on the gear indicator but they taught me not to look at it and instead listen to the engine. So much easier to tracker your gears, less dangerous and helps your riding confidence 🙂

I have a Honda CB125E that I use for commuting. It’s not fast but uses very little fuel. I get between 400-500 kilometres per tank. With so little speed and acceleration, it makes you plan corners better as you do not want to lose too much momentum.

I have many miles on Gold Wings. I wanted something small and light to put in my trailer and go to fly-ins, sort of a pit bike. I picked the Grom and love it. I am 77 and can no longer ride the heavy bikes due to balance issues and this thing is not only fun, it looks great also. And yes, it does not go fast. I had mine to just short of redline slight downhill at 64-65 mph. I call it a cult bike. LOL

Here is an old might you might fall in love with if you can find one or find someone who has one to loan it to you.. The Honda VFR 400, that's right Honda made a 400cc VFR which is surprisingly quick like a Honda 600c CBR bike. Unfortunately there aren't many in the US and Canada they were mostly sold in Europe. The 750 and 800 VFR were build using the same technology. This video is from HeroRR who lives in the US. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aM93d62CtrHHm4E.html - Enjoy! :)

@@iMotoTactic00L and thats the problem, fanboys will always buy stuff like this regardless. No it does matter, this season you could walk into any shop near me and pick up a ninja 400 for 4k. Thats a bikenthat actually usable, is better in every way possible, and cost the same? These are toys and will be prices higher as they are a niche but if they raise the prices they will further drive away people from them. Kawi had all these features on their bike besides the 5 speed and was cheaper than Honda now. The dash is vastly better and it has an oil filter and no starvation issues when popping up the front tire. My point is these bikes need to stay cheap to keep people interested and new buyers around or they will stand side to side with something like a ninja 400 and look at the grom and walk away from honda

Goody 2 Shoes? Did I see you X the DY to pass? Great video. Slow is great. 60 mph is my regular riding speed, even on the circle around Hotlanta. My Silverwing 600 would go over 100 mph, but 2 of us rode coast 2 coast(separate bikes) without ever getting over 60. People were super friendly and came over to talk to us at almost every fuel stop. I've heard stories from Grom travelers that say the same. People aren't as friendly when you ride a sport or loud-pipes-saves-lives bike. Thumpers are great bikes. Thanks for the great review, great editing, and light/entertaining atmosphere of your video.

As a rule (at least for old school riders like myself) I always count my gear position. It’s a mental thing I do in the back of my mind as I ride. Even if I have a gear indicator, I always do this to keep from glancing down or in an emergency situation I know where I am gear wise, for a quick escape or to shutdown quickly.

There's a thing I started practicing recently. Imagine duck walking the bike, but with only 1 leg... So my butt is scooted outside the bike, so I can flat foot with that 1 leg, then slightly lean the bike towards it to create this solid tripod thing with me leg and the bike and then just push forward or backward with that 1 leg when I need to. If I need to turn the bike, the bike is somewhat leaned over already, so turning that direction is easier. If I wanna go the other way, I just switch legs. Idk how well it'll work with heavier bikes, cuz my bike is only about 430ish lbs.

You can change the sprockets on the Grom to get a better top speed and on your bike check some of the custom seat companies to see if they offer a lower seat or you can go to a trim shop that recovers seats they can modify your seat to make it lower.

It is a mini-me. But I learned to ride on a Honda 90. Top speed 45mph In those days, we learned by riding. There were no courses and no MSF. Eventually upgrading to a Ducati 250, I honed my skills in the trenches. That bled over to emergency reaction in my which saved me from injury in my car. Many MC skills transfer right over to the "tanks" and "rollong egg cartons".

in singapore, we have class 2b 200cc and below for ur first licence. U need to wait for a year after that to go for class 2A courses and test to get a class 2A licence (400cc and below). Then you have to wait for another year to be able to go for another course to get class 2 licence which enable one to ride 400cc and above. Literally the government made it so difficult to get a USA equivalent beginner bike here. 3 years if u don’t waste any time. And we have high import tax and a bike ownership certificate which only valid for 10 years (costs abt 5k usd) . And for any bike it added up costing 3 times more than in USA. And we don’t have twisty mountain roads here as singapore is just a city state. The high wat speed limit is 90km (50 miles?).

Good idea. It’s pretty bumpy going over 35 or 40 mph. But I love my Grom.

20+ years ago, I took the MSF course (sponsored by the CHP) I learned on a Honda Nighthawk 250 and then I bought a 1978 Suzuki GS550E as my very first bike!

Re the age thing, it’s the same for us in the UK too I think…much cheaper and easier for youngsters to get their own wheels than learning to drive…..hence why these sorts of bikes are so popular….even more so thanks to Uber/Deliveroo etc using them as the choice of vehicle for their delivery riders (so small, nippy and perfect around town and short trips).

Damn, had a 2017 Kymco K-Pipe 125 for 2 months and I saw 71mph top and 65-67mph avg. Rode it like I stole it. Hooligan sh!t! Salute Sister Passed MSF using the only 250cc cruiser they had.

Hi, I used to ride a Honda Z-50 Mini Trail. Had an area of an asphalt paved parking lot covered in about 1/2 inch deep with sandbox play sand spread to about a fifteen foot diameter circle. The game was to fold up the gearshift side foot peg. Just keep my foot on the right foot peg. Then proceed to ride in a circle without touching the ground or minimally do dabs just for saves. Just making power broad slides just for practice and fun. Some days would hardly dab the ground at all. 'Twas a lovely motorbike. I was probably six feet tall at the time.

Great commuter ‼️ I have one of those it's enough to the small comute here in my country MOST of bikes are 125cc and the "go to for more power" it's the 250cc bikes above 250cc are more like a luxury vehicle than a need since our speed limit is 50 mph BUT I'm thinking of buying a Kawasaki 300EX Ninja for the aggressive looks and to be able to cruise easily at 50-60 mph, a friend of mine has a bmw F800GS and he can't maneuver and manage the heavy traffic as I do and all the extra power can't be used neither legally or safely 😅 I guess anything above 300cc on the streets is overkill (I'm not a motorcycle enthusiasts, I'm just someone who enjoys riding not racing)

Funny that in other countries, a 125cc is basic, but super normal, every time I go home to Mexico, I see a lot of delivery boys and regular riders in their hondas and itálikas of 125 and 150 riding in city traffic all the time.

My next door neighbor has one and loves it! He's 6'5" and 240lbs. 😱 He swears he can get up to 65mph, on a good downhill, full tuck, and a bit of a tailwind. I have yet to see it happen. 🤣

There are a lot of motorcycle with shorter seat heights. (Example, all the Honda Rebels including the new 1100 by 2.5 inchs or more. Even the Goldwing by over half an inch. But these seats are a little to a lot wider.) The clutch has a fiction point instead of a fiction zone. (This may be improved on later model years.) Only bicycles have a greater tendency to do brakies when doing a quick stop. (Which can be fun when done intentionally.) It is the only motorcycle that I have ridden that I make a big effort to shift my weight toward the back well practicing actual quick stops. After all my complaints, I still think it is a very fun bike that is great for some situations. It is also a great bike for some people.

cb300r.. still very light-weight, has more than twice the power and is capable (tho a bit scary) of going on highways. It's the grown-up Grom.

I ride a 150 (SYM Wolf Classic). It's become my primary mode of transportation. Highways are not really a big deal, but I rarely ride them anyway because they are not curvy or scenic. The real problem with a little bike is comfort on long rides, meaning there isn't any. Atlanta to Savannah takes all day and you feel pretty beat up at the end. I am considering a second, "touring" bike, probably a Versys 300.

Nope, if it was the only bike sure I'd happily ride it. At age 17 bought a new 1976 Honda XL175, on 2nd ride used it to get motorcycle endorsement, yes used to be easy. 3 weeks later I was sick of it, too slow for me. Was drooling over the Bonneville but couldn't afford one, Honda 450 took care of me for a few years. Now my VTX1300 seems adequate, almost bought the 1800.
