American English language placement is the key sounding natural in American English pronunciation. The steps sound simple: project from low in your throat, and keep everything relaxed there. However, placement in American English is still a huge challenge, largely because your first language is probably tenser and projects from higher in the throat. This Fluent American English pronunciation video takes a look at English language placement to give you some strategies and techniques to help you lower the placement, relax your throat, and sound more natural in American English!

i want to thank you for these videos. even though i speak English, i always felt like i was whispering the words. my first language is Spanish, so we tend to not open our mouths that much. So thanks to your videos, i realized i wasn't using my jaw and the lower part of my mouth/neck?when i was speaking. I honestly saw an improvement in my pronunciation just by practicing the last couple of days.

Dear Sir, I have been practicing for three months, and I got the placement now. What is a wonderful thing! I got rid of my Vietnamese accent already. I would like to say many many many many many... thanks to you. Now I'm trying to impersonate LARRY KING, MORGAN FREEMAN, TONY TODD. I hope that maybe I might get one of those sounds in 5-7 years late on or a really really deep sound (what have I got to lose? I have time and never give up easily). Thank you so much!

Thanks for your tips! You’re doing a great job! You are being my male voice reference because I never found men doing a great job like you on KZfaq and I was almost used to pronouncing words like girls from the videos did. It seems kinda funny but that’s the way it was. I am from Brazil and we struggle a lot with some sounds and the most important now “the voice placement”

thanks so much for writing Arao; it's great to hear from you and hope to see you around the channel more I think you're right; it's much easier to find female instructors in English, and especially for pronunciation, than males in general. There are also some subtle differences between how males and females talk. Best wishes with your placement practice/be sure to let me know if you have questions. My best friend speaks a local west African language and French. We live in America where I’m from and he really wants to improve his English. He is incredibly fluent with great language skills, but his pronunciation is off in many places mostly “Th”, the rhotic “r” sound, and vowel placement. This video was so helpful for him to understand the things I couldn’t quite articulate about why his vowels sounded off. Thanks!!

cool, I am practicing low placement for quite a long while, but today I find this is another wrong is low + tense, lol........ From the video, I believe I do have kinda tense when I am trying to speak in lower way, especially I am speaking in a long conference call. With kinda emotion or discussing deeply, I cannot help speak fast and higher the placement with tense, this is what I am facing....

Hi there Accent placement (placement of voice) depends mostly on vowels placement (how and where) of a particular accent. What do you think?
@FluentAmerican
@FluentAmerican Жыл бұрын
Hi sam! Thanks for writing; how'd you find the channel? Placement certainly is valid for vowels, but be careful with consonants! Raising the placement on a consonant can cause the placement to raise for the entire word

May I ask a question, please? In this video , you mentioned that we should feel most vibration in our throat. When i try this, i can do it well with vowels like /a/. However, with some like/i/ even if I try hard, I can still feel a little of vibration in my jaws and in my throat. I was wandering if it is normal or if i should not feel any vibration in my jaw.
@FluentAmerican
@FluentAmerican Жыл бұрын
hey Elchin! in general, you'll want to feel the vibration lower even for the /i/. The /i/ is difficult because many people's first languages use a higher placement, so it's easy to shift back to that position

@FluentAmerican
@FluentAmerican 2 жыл бұрын
Haha! So there could be a few things happening. 1) that "frog" sound could just be the resonance you are adding, which is good! 2) you may be relaxing too much, causing a vocal fry. Experiment with gradually making things a little tenser/higher (but not too much) 3) try tensing your abs/stomach a little more. We do livestreams on Saturdays where we listen to your audio; it'd be great if you sent a file so we could hear what is going on!

@@FluentAmerican its so hard for me, Americans really speak with super deep voice. I only sound as I want during your video but when I talk in my native language in 1 min and struggle to get back to the lower placement. Admittedly your tips help a lot, and these of other youtubers too.
@FluentAmerican
@FluentAmerican 2 жыл бұрын
@@steff_funny713 so glad to hear the tips help! that's also a great sign if you're able to achieve it at least some of the time; now the only thing missing is consistency. Practice and patience unfortunately are key. Also, not all regions of the US have a deep placement; if you find it's too unnatural, it could also be helpful to try variations that feel more like a fit (e.g.,many Californians are known for having a more nasally sound; same with accents from the Northeast). That said, those variations don't have the resonance/warmth that comes from deeper placement. It's great hearing about your pronunciation journey!
