Could you imagine if everyone dunked on the entire genre of death metal just because Six Feet Under exists? Today I'm here to school you on the MANY varieties of metalcore bands out there to PROVE that not all of them are either cringe kids with too much eyeliner or an endless parade of djent drones.

Zao have to be my favourite of all the metalcore bands, they’re so good and ridiculously unique and it’s good to see someone else recognise that. Also want to shout out Bleeding Through, who seem to fall through the cracks when metalcore is discussed despite being a big influence on deathcore.

There’s, actually, a ton of metalcore that I like; it’s usually more underground or unknown to people. Like ‘90s, ‘00s, ‘10s, it’s mostly underground with some (and I mean, a few) being mainstream, somewhat. The underground scenes seem to deliver more than the mainstream and “reaction - core” (as you say) ones.

I definitely have always dug the melodeath school of metal core, I hate that Shadows Fall, one of my favorite bands from the late 90's, early 2000's wave of bands, never got as big as I thought they deserved to get. For they time, they were up there with bands like Killswitch Engage and Lamb of God.

As a somewhat older (42) dude in the scene, I remember the metal core that was before the Swedish influenced stuff, bands like All out war, indecision ,which is now referred to as 90’s hardcore but my friends and I at the time called it metalcore, and it sounds very different than the metalcore that came later. So, there’s definitely variety in the genre.

Amazing video and great representation of the classics in the genre and how there are many waves and tastes coming and going constantly. Poison the Well is my all-time favorite and actually show off the crazy changes a band can have in metalcore - Opposites of December laid the foundation of emotionally charged breakdown heavy songs, but then they wrote an album like You Come Before You which adds in such a wide range of sounds. Then there's Versions, lol. So much going on there. Their Versions album is STILL metalcore, but jesus its completely and utterly expanded in every direction from their early, pioneering sound. Same can be said for Hopesfall who from the start had an incredibly dense melodic and spacey influence that really peaked fast and seems like no one has figured out how to do it justice again. Are you a fan of any of their work?

Love that you shouted out easycore in this video. Two of my all time favorite bands are Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! and Four Year Strong. Also, two new metalcore bands that rule are Static Dress, playing that Underoath style post-hardcore/emo/metalcore, and Foreign Hands, who are similar to the 2000s metalcore sound of SeeYouSpaceCowboy. Foreign Hands new single Chlorine Tears, which they just put out after signing with Sharptone records, might be my song of the year. Their EP from earlier this year is also fantastic.

An older metalcore act I used to really enjoy and find super underrated was Still Remains. Kind of a blip on the radar and they went way too far into the melodic side on their second album, but Of Love and Lunacy from 2005 and Ceasing to Breathe from 2013 still get regular plays from me. Always really loved their use of keyboards especially.

Great video. Lately, I have been listening to a lot of Hatebreed-ish stuff, like Boundaries and Bodysnatcher and Kublai Khan TX. And Hatebreed. I love Hatebreed. I don't know, I started to crave heavier stuff after listening to a lot of what I call "softcore", like Erra or BmtH - both bands I LOVE, no shade, but my mood and taste shifted. I love that the genre can accommodate all that.

I know that there is a lot of great metalcore that innovates with the genre (i.e. Loathe, Rolo Tomassi, The Callous Daoboys, BTBaM, TDEP, etc.) but I also enjoy some more "generic" metalcore that executes familiar and accessible sounds very well, which is why I enjoy Spiritbox and Invent Animate a lot (they are a bit more on the prog metalcore spectrum but still). Great video as always BTW

I can name the track which was my gateway to Metalcore: 'Saviour, Saint, Salvation' by Bleeding Through. I'd heard lots of polished, chart-friendly Metalcore at this point, and this was the first time I realised the style could be genuinely emotive and intense, full of stream-of-consciousness twists and turns. Also, check out Starkweather. Their 'Croatoan' album I remember being quite good and unorthodox.

The term metalcore is just thrown around so much people don't even know what it even means anymore. Some of these bands have ties to metalcore or hardcore but aren't actually a part of it. It'd be like if people called Pantera thrash or just called Korn rap. Albums like KSE - the end of heartache, trivium - ascendancy, all that remains - the fall of ideals, as i lay dying - shadows are security... those are metalcore and all have key elements that make them identifiable as such.

There is one metalcore band that is actually good. Integrity. From the 90's. "Humanity is the Devil". Awesome album. (I admit, that I passionately hate metalcore. I passionately hated all examples here... But then again Integrity is just a pure mixture of metal and hardcore punk, which would most likely be called Sludge Metal nowadays...).

Seems that no mater how good the music is, as soon as somebody uses the sufix "-core" describing certain sound, eyes start to roll. Too bad so many great bands have to suffer because metallcore became synonimous with crab dancing and autotuned clean vocals and I assume a lot of people still get Vietnam flashbacks as soon as it is mentioned, but I guess the genre had to learn the hard way and the fans have to unlearn some stuff

I'm not a boomer by any means and don't hate metalcore like alot of people but I've kind of drifted away from it over the years. My current favourite metalcore band is probably crystal lake though.

I don't understand the hate for metalcore and here's why.. I believe its actually one of the most diverse subgenres of metal, reason being, it draws from so many other genre's, hard-core, thrash, even death and black metal, it really has got parts in there for every type of metal fan if you dig deep enough, the heavy, the melodic I prefer older style metalcore though, and I'm not saying there aren't some bands that fall into the generic because there definetly is, but some people seem to hate it just because its not a "cool" subgenre of metal. And I think its got a bad reputation purely through people not giving it a chance past maybe afew bands they heard and didn't like.

I don't listen to much metalcore anymore, but I used to love it when I started getting into metal. My favorite metalcore bands are the ones who blend it with other subgenres like Trivium (melodeath, thrash, prog, heavy), Periphery (prog, djent), Eskimo Callboy (electronicore, deathcore, pop, rap, dubstep), and BTBAM (prog, death, avant-garde). Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying are great too.

I still need some convincing on metalcore. I usually get turned off by the vocals. No doubt there are some amazing musicians in the genre, but I have yet to find a metalcore vocal style I can tolerate. I am a doom head so perhaps there is hope if there are such influences sprouting up.

Trust me, there are a LOT of very different vocal styles here too. Bands with no cleans, different approaches to harsh vocals, etc. Worth exploring. Consider checking out that latest Zao album at least.

You know? I find it funny how 10 years ago Metalcore had a bad rep but the most elitist people on metal since they thought everything sounded like Asking Alexandria or Attack Attack (and if you showed them bands like Unearth, KSE, ABR, or AILD, they said they didn't count, or were just ripping At the Gates), and now considering that Metalcore is arguably the most successful genre on metal in the mainstream with a big difference, despite the whole elitist critiques kind of fading away, there are still people who brag about Metalcore being all samey and repetitive and based only around breakdowns and stuff, but the very first examples they give of "the exception" are the same 10 bands everyone and their mom knows about And it's honestly kind of a shame because even with core as a whole being born out of a pretty specific sound, there's quite more variety than most people don't count of (by pure marketing label, Converge and a band like Black Veil Brides are pretty much on the same genre)
