One of my local stores; that's franchised like nation wide, has produce that is left out for this reason. It's called kids produce. And it's meant to be eaten by kids that are hungry while shopping.

In germany you weigh yourself and it determines the price and gives you a barcode in most stores. So you weigh whatever you want, type in the code and put the sticker on either the produce or the bag you put it in That way you can technically eat a whole kilo of bananas in the store (don't do this) As a cashier I've had people just hand me the wrapper and at first I was so confused but then they said "my kid already ate this so you can just ring it up and throw the wrapper away" Also on hot days a lot of people drink half the bottle of water before they get to checkout, as long as the product doesn't leave the store until you've paid for it there is no issue (in your tummy is still in the store 🤣)

The other day while waiting behind this woman in line at Walmart, she was eating a chocolate bar and after she ate 3/4s of it left it on the impulse buy shelves like she's done it everytime shes there. She then promptly turns around without cause and disgustingly looks me up and down. I just burst into laughter and said out loud what she did to my partner and she could not have gotten out of there faster lmaooo

I never let my boys eat in the store. I made them wait till we got in the car. I did not let them drink either. I did not want to start that. I see open packages and half eaten stuff all the time in the store. Its horrible. The stores need to stop it from happening!!

When I was a cashier, I was always paranoid the card of the person that already ate the chips would get denied or something.

As someone has low iron if im out and about i just grab it and pay then eat through out the store ❤️ so I don't make my cashiers angry cuz it's not their fault that I have low iron!

My favorite grocery shopping memories from being a kid were my mom buying a chocolate milk and a $1 bag of chips for us and we’d all have them in the store, paying for them after. I felt like I was getting away with something and also it was a great lil treat.

Lmao growing up on low income I cannot fathom opening something in the store and eating it before you pay for it. I 100% understand that as long as you can pay for it, it really doesn’t matter if you consume it before purchasing it. I’m the assistant store director at a grocery store and I do see that all the time. Now a days because I can afford it, I’ll do that from time to time if I desperately need a drink before I’m done shopping but it still feels weird despite knowing it’s ok. But growing up it was a big no no because eating it first meant that we were locked into needing to paying for it. A lot of times we would shop but then have to regroup and figure out what we needed to put back and what we were getting. Plus things that make sense to “snack on” while shopping were expensive impulse buy type items anyway. When you only have $100 to spend on a month’s groceries for 5 people that $3 energy bar and $2 soda digs into the funds quite a bit. Especially if your mom is trying to shop with her 3 kids with her. In australia, at a lot of woolies/ woolworths, theres a little area that has a few different fruits where kids can take one and eat for free. I think a few coles used to do something similar, but idk.

I would get my kids a banana and then just choose one slightly larger than the one they’re eating and have the cashier weigh it twice. Never have had an issue with it.

me and my grandma would always eat stuff while at the store either it be a thing of mac n cheese at the walmart bakery or a bottle of soda, we still always paid for it tho and it was especially really nice to eat things before it gets cold lol

Woolworths, a grocery store franchise in Australia has a thing called "free fruit for kids" and it's a little stack of shelves at the store entrance with apples and bananas for your kids to eat while you're shopping. It's such an amazing idea and I love that they encourage kids to eat fruit

My daughter did this once, I took another banana to the register so we could pay for it and the cashier acted so confused. She was like “how am I supposed to weigh this?” And called a manager over. I had already told her to just scan the one I brought and put it back on the shelf. Then the manager told her the same thing! Took the manager 5 freaking minutes to get the cashier to understand. The cashier was arguing with the manager “but how do we know that they weigh the same? The banana inventory is going to be off!” The manager repeated to just scan and weigh the banana she had in her hands!

My store has a fruit stand so kids can eat for free in the store.

I work at Publix as a cashier. Yeah. Its really annoying so please dont do it. With that being said, if you do forget, bring us a second banana that was about the same size and we'll weigh it instead. Its seriously not that big of a deal. The main hassle will be that unless you do it, we'll have to get someone else to take the banana back and if we're busy that can be frustrating. But as I said, its seriously not that big of a deal. In bigger stores with strict inventory management, it can be a problem so do try to avoid it, but if you forget or dont think about it, its kinda whatever. EDIT: Since some of yall cant read, allow me to make it clear, I dont care if you eat something while going around the store. My comment is about if you do and if you bring it to us and its a weighed item, then heres an easy solution. If you want to ride my ass because "f corporations! how dare I care about if yall steal!" I dont. I only care if it becomes my problem to handle because I'm sorry, but I'm not going to get written up or lose my job because yall wanted a snack and I am certain others feel the same whether or not they're in this comment section

I let my toddler do this with the snack packs....fruit, cheese and crackers. And then scan it later. But the fruit annoys me, that everyone eats out of the bags or containers and then don't buy them, plus with that it's weight so you'll be paying less for it.
