HI everyone here is my two cents on burning pine in our Central Boiler CL 6048 Classic Wood Boiler!
Its a great supplementary firewood for warm days or early and late season burning! Mix it in with some hardwood to maintain the coal bed and you will be good to roll!

Jay, you are correct. Here in Alaska we primarily burn spruce. Occasionally you may get a few Birch logs, but they are few and far between.

Jay, I burn pine all the time and it has worked great for me. Yes, I do burn it along with hardwoods at same time because of the coal bed and it works. My friend Aaron uses pine for his gasification boiler which he built himself and he tells me the pine he uses is green, yes, 40 to 50% humidity. On a gasification! It's complicated, but you have probably seen the video yesterday on my channel. Holy smokes!

Per pound pine actually has more BTUs than hardwood due to the resins in it. It just takes up more space. Pine gets a bad wrap, but I had zero issues burning it in my wood stove and I have zero issues throwing it in my boiler now. Wood is wood for me, if it's dry, it's getting burnt.

Per pound, pine has a little more heat content than hardwood. On a volume basis, hardwoods have more heat content because they are heavier per unit volume.

We burn pine in the house stove. I burn it during the day and save the heavy hardwoods for overnight burning. In my stove, pine likes a little more air and doesn’t do great in a low temp setting. But here in the Southeast, Pine is stigmatized for some reason. People won’t touch the firewood and they’ll burn good logs in a brush pile. My electric bill is $60 monthly. So yeah, I’m burning whatever…pine included.

I used to get wood from a tree service that brought me 95% yellow pine. I have burned 100% pine for about 4 years in a cl6048 . I don't let it burn all the way down and have plenty of coals to keep it burning.

I cant imagine why people are apposed to burning soft wood. You are right on the pine. Standing dead wood is great stuff. I get it for free off my woodlot. I prefer soft wood, but do have some hardwood for cold nights. Creosote is only a problem when burning cold fires. Draft shut down. A problem also with burning wet or unseasoned wood. Thanks for the video. Factual wood burning advice.

My boiler sees very little if any hardwood until mid to late November and then the same about mid-March and beyond. I have access to so much pine and other softwoods that is all I burn during the warmer parts of the year. I can actually burn it all year if I choose to and still get 12 hours without any trouble even during the coldest days but try to use about half hardwood/softwood combination during the middle of the winter. The biggest difference between the 2 other than the BTUs is hardwood produces so many more coals which keeps the water hot for a long time even after the wood is burnt but I have no problems keeping the fire going with just pine. If you are open to suggestions I would build an easily moveable rack close to that boiler and put a piece of metal roofing on it. That is what I have and even though I still put a tarp on it to keep the snow off of it it makes a lot easier to keep the wood dry. It also makes it so you can stack enough by the boiler to last a week or 2 and it makes it easier on a daily basis to fill it. I know you did it for the purpose of the video but if I was out there at 1 in the afternoon on a fairly warm day I would fill that sucker to the top and leave it until morning without issues.

Hey again Glock! Yes indeed some sheds are the boiler are on the list. I wanna do a rack to the left for kindling/small wood to get the fire going if it burns out or wood for the wife if she needs to load it. Then to the right of the boiler ill make a big rack for seasoned wood I can load like you said load it once a week or whatever so I dont have to do day to day runs with the cart!

I do the same in my 6048. Have 10 acres of norway spruce and red pine. Was an old Christmas tree farm back in the 1940s. I always have standing dead pine and spruce. The spruce dries out almost like kiln dried lumbar. All thats needed is to limb up and cut to length. Then toss in. Its so light weight when dry i usually cut to 3 to 4 feet long.

Jay, enjoy your videos. Like you I am from NH, just north of Franconia Notch. I have a CB 5036, for 16 yrs now. I have perfected a new method (reverse burn) to increase burn time and efficiency. When you reload follow this process. First, using a hoe or flat shovel push all the coals and ashes 18” back leaving the front 18” COMPLETELY clear. Then reload the stove stacking wood in the front of stove allowing 2” or so to touch the coals you have pushed back. Close the door. You will increase your burn time and use considerably (30-40%) less wood. It also produces much less smoke. Would you demonstrate this “reverse burn” technique to your viewers? it works great, i thought of it by observing how gassers burn. Please come up and visit, I’ll show you my set up. Wifey will make you lunch.

Hey there! Thanks for the comment! I will HAVE to try this indeed! Ive never heard of this method for a classic boiler... its deff worth a shot. I just wonder what happenes when the two inches of wood overlapping the coals burns out? Im assuming the fire will keep kicking on and off as heat is needed but ill give it a shot my friend! Thank you for the kind offer. Id love to do a series checking out fellow NH boilers for sure! I think that would be a cool series! Shoot me and email with your setup and ill share it! Creosote is a problem in any wood species if you dont burn the fire hot enough. I am currently burning 100% honey locust. I loaded my stove full and closed the damper for the night and it got too cold. The creosote was literally dripping down my stove pipe.

Your right about burning pine. Nothing wrong with it as long as it's dry. You need to learn though, not all conifers are pine. Spruce, hemlock, larch, cedar, and the like are not pine. Classifying them as such makes you sound like a tree hack instead of an arborist, or are you?
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 5 ай бұрын
Hello. I never mentioned larch or cedar. Spruce and hemlock are considered to be part of the conifer family so they are indeed considered pines. Here is New England we considered anything not a hardwood a "pine" thats why I used the term.

I apoligize I was just caught off guard reading the comment saying I mentioned cedar and larch LOL I didnt wanna throw out incorrect info lol. Ive always treated wood as pine OR hardwood really. A or B. in my opinon, thats all ive really needed to know haha. I know my species now as its relevant for climbing as some wood as you know behaves way different as far as tear out, peeling, hinge strenth, wedge capability, weight for rigging, etc! I guess having the wood boiler made me classify it simply as its either hardwood or softwood LOL
