There's so many benefits to owning and using an Axe-FX that narrowing it down to just a few to discuss can be difficult. In this video I talk about why I enjoy using an Axe-FX in my daily playing, gigging, and touring life, and what sets it apart from other guitar rigs.

It's a no brainer FAS has been doing this for decades and is simply the best money can buy, period! And talk about updates? They update more than any other.

Very true! Huge point there! I actually requested a harmonic tremolo for the GT1000 and Boss never delivered and has only had a few updates since I bought it in 2019. Another huge reason for going Fractal!

Sold my AFX 3 and FC-12... then started missing it... took a year but I found someone unloading the same pair... but this time it was a MKll and came with an EV-1 Exp pedal! I am so glad to be back in the Fractal Family...! So inspiring. I absolutely love the flexibility and the verbs are to die for...

I recently got a used AFX II unit, quite impressed and happy. I used to own a Mesa Mark V combo, Fender Supersonic, other older Mesa units... Did the huge pedalboard thing... Also tried the software plugins, couldn't deal with the latency. the Axe FX is literally kinda scaring me LOL. Like I stare at this box and see a whole studio full of equipment (previously out of reach) that I can now use to write music with. An incredibly inspiring creative tool...

I should add that I started playing guitar during high school in 2006. I remember trying early BOSS multieffects units (before they were really "modelers"), the early software JamVOX modeller, the ineffable Line 6 POD lol. But also getting to experience proper tube rigs thanks to my friends Dad , he had a Musicman Twin he'd crank and run pedals through lol, taught me a lot about using the tone/volume, taught me so much really (RIP Paul)... I ended up taking a long break in college ~2011 but started getting serious again shortly before the pandemic. So I'm not a beginner, in fact I'm definitely a "tweaker", I can remember drooling through the Mesa Boogie TriAxis manual in computer class... hahah times have changed!!

Love my AxeFx III. I have a Helix, an HX Stomp and a pedalboard with really great pedals. The AXE slays them all. I run them into Quilter guitar amps and it sounds glorious. The learning curve was definitely greater but after a while I found that Axe Edit is much better and easier to use than HX Edit and the tweakablity is endless. I rarely use my other modelers or pedals anymore. The FC-12 is infinitely programable and is designed to work seamlessly with the Axe and doesn't require midi.

I think the FM3 is a good place to start for beginners or people getting into modeled amps and fx. I personally love mine. The presets are so good I haven't really felt the need to dig into how fully use it yet.

Yes I just got an Axe FX3 Turbo. I love the sounds. I have 2 nice Tube amps and 2 pedalboards but I see myself going to the Axe Fx3. Quick set up and sound. I want to get a Rack kinda like the one you have. Would like to get a wireless set up with IEM. Have you done a video on IEM set up? Thanks for your videos.

On the fence about hardware modelers. I do use S Gear in my studio quite often with a fast Thunderbolt 3 audio interface and it sounds awesome. The Fractal stuff is interesting for sure, as is the Quad Cortex...

I got my FM9 Turbo yesterday. It is... pretty good. However, it is supposed to be an upgrade for me from Kemper. I don't think it is though. I've been playing with it for 2 whole days now for hours, checking other people's profiles, using EQ, compressor, all sorts of amps, premium IRs. Nothing really convinces me that it sounds better than Kemper. It is fair to say though that I had Kemper for years and went through thousands of various premium profiles for it. So I know what sounds good there. I have my favourites. Maybe not fair to compare it to Fractal after 2 having it for 2 days. However, I might need to return it as I don't think it will be worth twice the price for me (new Fm9 vs used Kemper). I like cleans/crunch sounds in Kemper but I was never fully satisfied with high gain tone. I heard Fractal excels in that. It is easier to get a usable high gain tone in Fractal but I have not found anything that I would love yet. I really wanted to love FM9 as I waited for it so long. A bit disappointing experience so far for me. I am not sure if I can change it.

The Kemper “profiler” is a very different beast. I suggest you spend much more time and get on the Fractal forum and communicate your issues because your issue is a very common issue that Kemper people run into, but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone decide to stick with the Kemper (or actually get rid of their Fractal for just the Kemper) ever in the time I’ve been using the Fractal. The amp modeling and dialing in tones is a different ecosystem with Fractal, but well worth it in the end. Also, for you to finally be able to have the FM9 in your possession is something to not take lightly. The FM9 is a power house for the money. I would say nothing can touch it right now. Well except the AxeFXIII Turbo.
@Kraatzman
@Kraatzman Жыл бұрын
@@AudioAtmos Absolutely agree. There is a steep learning curve but with all the KZfaq videos out there for dialing in a tone, you will have no issues dialing in your tone. Start simple and work to complex. Look at the exchange to see how other people setup their presets for reference, Backup the unit so you can restore and start over if needed. Its so easy with a PC.
@mathew_dale
@mathew_dale Жыл бұрын
Like the others have said, stick it out and I’ll bet you will be happy with the FM9. Definitely a bit of a learning curve but using resources like the forum and YT videos can be a big help. Good luck!
@volv
@volv Жыл бұрын
Thanks guys. I went from "I am going to return it" one evening to "oh, I am starting to get some nice tones finally" next morning. I found a preset on the exchange that I quite liked, removed all the stuff I don't need from it and started experimenting with it. At first I honestly just liked the clean tone in that preset but it was pretty much on the same level as the clean profiles I like on my Kemper. Then I watched some videos (yours too Matthew, thanks!) suggesting some blocks that can make the tone better. Some changes to the CAB block, some EQ, nice reverb to widen the sound. Next I did some general changes in device's setitngs like input level etc. After that I realised I can actually import WAV format IRs to Fractal, not just SYX. So I imported some premium IRs that I had for a long time. Ownhammer, Sinmix. That is when I actually smiled and decided that Fractal FM9 is great. Finally some great tone. The fact that you can quickly switch between amps or IRs in that browser/preview mode with a click of a button makes it easy to find something I like. Yes, there is a ton of options everywhere and a steep learning curve but I am now convinced that spending more time with it is worth it. The problem with Kemper is you can't do that much with a profile. If you don't like it then most likely you won't be able to make it good enough with tweaking. In the Fractal world it is all in the open. At some point you are guaranteed to like something. It is a matter of finding it. Once you do, you know what you like and can reuse blocks in other presets etc. Well, if you read it then I congratulate you haha. Quite a wall of text. I am going to keep the FM9. Thanks again!

Thinking about buying the Fractal audio Fm9 over my Helix. What would you suggest?
@Kraatzman
@Kraatzman Жыл бұрын
FM9 with a FC6 if live giging only. If you want double the CPU, FX3 with FC6 or 12. I like the FX3 but thats me. I want as much CPU for future growth of the product without sacrificing quality of an audio block. Look at videos of setups and look at the CPU used in the top right of the screen.
@mathew_dale
@mathew_dale Жыл бұрын
I’m a Fractal guy so I’d say go with that. Helix won’t quite be as flexible as the FM9 might but might also require a bit more learning to see the benefits over the Helix. Do your research and really decide if the FM9 has something you can’t live without.
