➤ ABOUT US: Hi! We’re Nick & Raychel, the couple behind the blog Not Luxe - where we write travel guides & help people open their eyes to alternative living, whether that be teaching English online, moving to Cambodia, taking advantage of working holiday visas (like in Australia) or building a DIY stealthy camper van to live & work on the road. Right now, we’re living the van life and travelling throughout Canada, Mexico and the USA.
Our goal here is to bring you weekly content where we hope to inspire you to break free & live the life you desire. On this channel, we talk everything from finances to minimalism to working online to mindset and post a weekly vlog of our daily lives. We hope you join us on our journey to see the world, save money, live minimally, and most importantly, have fun.
So if you're looking for a channel about van life and budget travel, you're in the right place.
Love,
That couple that lives in an ambulance

It's basically a GM V-8 with an aluminum block. You will be able to work on it yourselves, things will be fine. And now that we have your attention. CHECK THE OIL IN THE TRANSFER CASE! It is not easy to get to, and once you figure out where that is, and if it takes oil, check on it again in a week, you will then be able to see if it is leaking, and if so how bad. I opted to just do the pain in the ass top up every couple weeks, they guy that I sold it to did not heed my advice after several warnings, and ruined it 6 months after.

Being a long-time Land Rover owner myself, one thing I can assure you is that you'll be better mechanics in a year or so than you ever thought possible :-) That said, if you've had a coolant leak, pay VERY close attention to the temperature gauge and pull over / check coolant at any signs of overheating as the 3.5 and 3.9L V8 Rover engines are susceptible to head gasket failure when overheated. I'd suggest a quick check in the rocker heads (just take the oil filler off and look in with a torch), if just black and oily then probaby ok but if you see a brown or white emulsion (creamy texture) then you need to get the head gasket checked, particularly if you are noticing a loss of power or white, sweet smelling smoke from the exhaust. Try to find a Haynes manual asap - well worth it. Pays to shop around for parts - I've had good results with central4wd in Queenstown for one.

Of course - the upside of owning a Land Rover, is when they are going well, they are absolutely awesome on and off road.

AA (Automobile Association) Membership. There are quite a few Car Wrecker Yards where you can buy spare/replacement parts for your "new" 2nd-hand vehicle. -Don't let what has happened slow you down, on the bright side you'll learn a lot more about the mechanics of your vehicle. Btw, Queenstown is the most expensive place in NZ in every way, the further you're away from it the cheaper food, fuel etc. Also, the North Island is much greener & just as friendly, Cheers

Thanks! This is the mindset we need. Morale is just a bit low right now. We’re starting in QT because my best friend since childhood lives here, but we’ll eventually move on. Cheers 🤞✨

@@nickandraychel I concur with ^Andy's comments. The sooner you are away from and out of Queenstown, the sooner you'll have more cash in your pocket to do more. Facts ! Also to add to the last line that the North Island is much greener and just as friendly, Also a point to note - The further that you go north the warmer it will become also. But do see as much of the South Island as you can too, both Islands have some amazing scenery. Cheers from the Nth Is, 🇳🇿 😎M.

Smile and wave 😂minor setups happen. Nick now has a bit of experience in radiators 😂always a silver lining. It may come in handy when you really get out and about. 👍Consider an AA membership as well. They are good when you have an older vehicle and doing a bit of mileage. Won't be stuck on the road then.

Theres a 4wd Garage on Gorge road. Theyre landrover specialists i believe. Could be worth getting them to look over it to see what might pop up in future. I normally take my surf to them.

Great watch as always 👊🏿...it happens haha, the car definitely gonna be a pain in the butt like some of the comments mentioned but it should be fine in the long run. But best believe after you get one thing fixed something else will pop up. Just a part of owning vehicles. Especially older cars, very durable but constantly need attention lol. Can't wait for the rest of the adventures to begin 🫡.

Always get Toyota or Honda if you can. That older Nissan Pathfinder should be a good vehicle to at that age. The newer Nissan`s are not as good as the older ones.

The 1998 model with the 4•2 liter no electric windows . no twin sunroof which causes mold. No airbags . is the best model you can find. Ive ownd most years and they all suck but the 98 . no electrics model. Cheap if you run it on gas ..

Thanks for showing the reality of your experience. :D Tbh all cars are built with planned obsolescence. This would have happened regardless of which vehicle you bought.

European,USA or UK cars expensive in NZ if they break down..NZ imports new and used from Japan much cheaper , easier to fix, parts available and mechanics can fix everywhere due to NZ$ and Japanese Yen exchange rate. ...
