It's great seeing Mt Taranaki again with snow. I'll always remember climbing to the summit as a schoolkid and seeing New Plymouth as a tiny town below. To people in England who think NZ is a bit offshore from Australia tell them, I think, a flight from Auckland to Sydney is similar distance of London to Moscow. I didn't realise you bought a bare paddock and planted all the trees. Well done! I guess the cow poo in the soil would have served you well. I must say, it has to be good that Bath is heritage listed and someone can't arrive and bulldoze through the houses. I was last in NZ this year for a family wedding and, walking around Waipukurau, strangers in cars waved and pedestrians passing by gave me "hellos"

Where will it end though? you can't just erase history, during the Women's World Cup every time we saw a stadium it had the Maori name of the place first and the same for Australia in Aborigine, are you happy that the minority in both countries are telling you what to call the place's you have lived all your life something else? I'm sorry but to me the places I know and knew in NZ will always be what I grew up knowing, if you are happy to be told what to call places that have been what they have been for over 150 years for some self-flagellation then fair play, I take it you are young and feel guilty? well, let me tell you NZ and Australia are the countries they are because of European settlement, don't feel ashamed I don't.@@Mcfreddo

@@pillred5974 I was only referring to Pic Mascarin that's around 130,000 years old. (Various volcanic activity that has long bern eroded are all actively started about 23 million years ago btw.) The rest in reply to yours, is a bit of a stretch in the implication dept. Even you were once told about Egmont, so you can't use that old chestnut as a for an argument.

As a kiwi living in the uk now for 6+ years I yearn for home. At first I loved it here but the horrendous long winters, miserable attitudes of people anytime it’s not sunny, the football hooligans, sexism, racism, politics and the fact it feels like people are only out for themselves and never out to care about others has got to me. People here litter like it’s nothing. They’ll finish a beer and drop the can in the gutter, finish chips (crisps) and just leave them on the park bench where it blows away, everyone smokes, everyone complains constantly how shit the uk is, and it’s really tough to find someone to encourage you. NZ gets such a reputation for tall poppy syndrome but in the UK you can do any amazing job at something or do something truly incredible you should get a pat on the back for but Brits don’t want you to feel pride, so they’ll ignore you. It is a case of keeping up with the Jonses as you say, so if you elevate yourself people want to put you back in your place. Also back home it is that can do attitude. I remember at being shocked when I was moving house here in the UK one time and as a woman carrying the boxes, cleaning, helping move the fridge and sofas and a group of British girls from work said “put that down! Let the boys do it for gods sakes” 😮. That’s just not a thing in NZ. You just do it yourself if you want it done, regardless of gender. Anyway, I’ve had some magical times here, I’m eternally grateful, I’ve learned a lot, but I think it’s time to go back home to my people and my country.

14% of people smoke here in England, hardly everybody. And where I live here in Somerset we have had 5 frosts so far this winter and all my Geraniums and Fuschia are still in flower, plus you can count on the fingers of one hand how many days it has snowed here in the last 5 years, it snows a lot more in many places in NZ than it does here. I have lived in NZ myself and visited many times on holiday and love it but don't view NZ through rose-tinted specs if you do go back the cost of living will shock you the price of food and drink is much higher there than here, just watch a few vids you will see what I mean, $18 for a pint of beer! yes really.

@@pillred5974 I spend 2-3 months in NZ every year for work and am a Kiwi and have lived in the uk almost seven years so I might have more of an idea than you. Everything you said just proved my point. Brits love to prove people wrong, one up them, get butt hurt about facts. If you think the UK isn’t colder or worse weather than NZ then you haven’t lived in NZ 🤣🤦🏽‍♀️. The cost of living here in the UK is horrendous compared to NZ. In NZ the groceries are expensive, rent similar (but you get much more!!), petrol, taxes all similar, utilities cheaper. Food better, air better, water better… can’t even compare factually

Hiya guys, really enjoyed your comments, as usual. But I feel obliged to add another for you to think about...the whenua, the land, if you love this place, it will love you back, may sound a tad airy fairy, but I can't put it any other way, Kiwis in general, love this country ... not for the flag, but for the actual, physical country. The fact that you appreciate this place as much as a native, makes you Kiwi, but you already know this.

I can't say how long it has been since I read a book and it made me laugh out loud in every chapter. I brought the hard cover and had to force myself not to stay up all night reading. You and your family showed a huge amount of courage to take that leap and travel the world together, truly remarkable memories to carry for the rest of your life. You Liz are even more remarkable and courageous to put yourself physically, emotionally and intellectually out in the world for all to see, read and enjoy. Tracy, this is quite possibly the loveliest comment I have ever received...thank you SO, so much for your wonderful support and kind words. I was at the theatre in Wellington (on Wednesday night). It was the end of the show, and I had nipped out to the bathroom while Brian was waiting for Tess to come into the foyer. He obviously checked his phone while I was gone because when i returned, he said, "I think you should read this right now..." It was your comment. ❤️ I can honestly say it brought me to tears (which is not ideal when you're waiting for your daughter to come out from her show, and you're supposed to be super happy and not snotty with red eyebrows...😂). Tracy, you made me feel so very special and loved. Thank you very, very much. I will point this comment off and save it to my, "read this when in doubt" folder. You are a very special person, Tracy, Arohanui, my friend. Liz xx

Money serves only 3 purposes, food in the belly clothes on ya back, and roof over ya head. The word Old person in NZ terms is a show of deference honor and respect. Thanks for your amazing sentiments of NZ and your delivery is incredibly entertaining. The excitement, and enthusiasm to share your experiences and gratitude is beautiful. From an expat Maori boy living in Australia for fifty four years, it fills my heart with deepest gratitude to have been blessed to been introduced to the world through the land of the long white cloud. But in saying that I regard myself as a member of the world family first, NZ next and Australia has my gratitude for putting up with me for most of my life. So pleased you find joy in our unpretentious (on the whole) little Country. You definitely raise the quality of its people's hospitality, I thank you for that. I lived in London for 8 years. At the cafe, in Whitechapel, I used to frequent when I went into the office, I used to get free coffees, because I turned up so often and get to know them. It's harder starting a casual conversation in London. I used to turn up to the cafe in Jandals and shorts, because I'm a software developer and it was casual dress at work, and nobody blinked an eyelid. As you know, London is different from the rest of the UK. Then being Kiwi, I think, when I did go to other places in England, I get the feeling they had a hard time pigeon holing me. There are aspects I miss when I lived there, but I'm happy to be back in New Zealand, and I don't think I'll ever leave NZ again. In NZ it's things like the Kiwi accent, the laugh you tend to get from Maori guys, easier to have conversations with strangers, and the bird calls are wonderful, that make me feel like I'm home. I'm sure I could come up with other reasons.

Great points guys. My wife and I (and the dog) moved out from the Midlands a few months ago. We love it here. Totally agree on the old values and totally different attitude to the UK. We’re in our early 30s so can’t speak to the 50s/60s but compared to the UK, it’s so much more accepting and at the same time less PC out here. Makes life so much more relaxing and everyone is so friendly and helpful. The UK seems depressing in comparison. Give us a shout if you’re ever up in the Whangarei Heads!

😢Hi, Liz and Brian, enjoyed your comments about living in N. Z. As an expat Kiwi living in Australia 46 years now, the Kiwi blood still and will always flow in the veins! Aus is wonderful with similar Kiwi values, but with often a harder edge to it. Similar early settler backgrounds and relatively shorter European influence give both countries a younger history feel, even though both have a long indigenous past. By the way, if you are ever asked again by someone who has no knowledge of Kiwiland, tell them Australia is an island off the N.Z. coast! Especially if there is an Australian in earshot! Reactions could be humourous! Also explain to them how we got our 2 main islands: it used to be one long land mass, but it broke its back carrying Australia! Lol! Cheers, Otto.

3:36 Necessity is the mother of invention as they say. Most Kiwis are unaware of the full extent of the inventiveness of their kind. I have an extensive list of Kiwis ability to make things happen, but always top of any list is the invention of the Barmac VSI crusher. You will find a Barmac in 60% of the world's quarries. They are still made in Matamata and exported worldwide, apart from one plant in India making them for just that market alone. Barmac received NZ's export award of the decade back in the 1990's. Just reflect on what I've said; I'm a quarryman and wherever I've been in the world, saying 'Barmac it' is a universal expression you'll hear everywhere, even when the machine being used isn't a Barmac. What is a Barmac and why is it so important? They offer an affordable means of shaping concrete and asphaltic aggregates, or of making sand (different speeds allow these functions to happen). NZers couldn't afford the more expensive machines, such as rod mills, or the high wear component associated with hammer mills. So, faced with the challenge, two Kiwis set about finding a solution and they invented the process of rock-on-rock sand making and rock shaping. There is a more recent example of this kind of inventiveness too; Rocket Lab. Their first rocket hit a snag; they called up NASA and found they couldn't just buy rocket fuel. So, they went into the kitchen - literally - and made their own rocket fuel. Their very first launch was broadcast on TV nationwide using this home-made fuel. Kiwi can-do is very real, and not to overlook Richard Pearse first achieved powered flight down in Tinwald near Timaru, long before the Wright Brothers, and Pearse did so using a tractor propeller, monoplane and ailerons. Of course, he lost the propaganda war and his accomplishments went unrecognised (although they had been witnessed jsyk). He died intestate in Christchurch and the official winding up his estate thought his contraptions rather interesting. He preserved them instead of sending them to the dump, and these are now lodged with MOTAT in Auckland. Just my 2 cents.

In fact when you said, “it’s like going back 40 years”, I said those exact same thing! And that’s weird considering South Africa is 3rd world. Fun Fact: Nee Zealand had the chance to merge with Australia and become one country in 1901 , to become a seventh state and part of the federation. But New Zealand still remains the only country where New Zealanders can migrate to Australia and work live permanently, without the need to Apply for a migration Visa ( visa on Arrival) . Hence why SO many more people from NZ migrate to Australia, then Australians migrating to NZ. Many NZ’ers end up living on the Gold Coast in Queensland, as they like the warm beach lifestyle.

Wonderful chat …. Or…. Maybe a listen🙂. We are from a little amazing town in the mountains of BC Canada and just came back from a little 54 day drive through New Zealand. Five weeks in the South Island and 3 or so in the North. We live on a farm at the end of a dead end road in the mountains British Columbia so we know beautiful. The South Island sunk so deeply into my soul. I feel as though we are kindred spirits. My honey and I loved it with all our hearts. We drove 6500 k in our camper van and really saw so much. We drove right by where you live on the way to a tramp up Taranaki then off for a drive on the lost highway. I don’t know if you will understand this statement but “ I feel safer knowing that where we live and New Zealand exist “ They ground me.

I couldn't help but laugh about your 'yoghurt' comments. As kiwis, back in the 80s we had English friends who had recently emigrated. My wife used to get annoyed when they constantly 'corrected' us on pronunciation, and yoghurt was one of the words I remember. One evening my wife had had enough of it , so she responded. "Over there, you may say it that way. But over here, where we are now, WE say it this way". That was the end of it!! And both of us males were petrol heads and I got a bit of the same 'correction' of car terminology. I was very familiar with the differences due to reading UK car magazines, so my reponse was one day. "How can you poms say a car has wings? Only planes and birds do here. We call them mudguards, or guards for short, which term matches the function'? All good fun.
