There's no "right" way to approaching the pentatonic scale. But there is an easy way where you only have to learn two positions of the scale and still unlock the fretboard of the guitar.
1:26 - Trick #1 - Know The Root Note
The key to fully understanding the guitar is locating the root note of the scale.
3:12 - Trick #2 - Add Musical Context
Play over a backing track and try experimenting with how you play the scale. You'll find melodies from changing the order or phrasing of the scale.
5:12 - Trick #3 - Master One Part Of The Neck
Start with mastering ONE part of the neck to keep it simple and accessible. So when you hear a lick, you know where to find it.
7:46 - 4th Position Pentatonic Scale
You can also call it the A string root Pentatonic shape. This is when you can start to add new colors and notes.
9:46 - Transposing The Pentatonic Scale
When you know the regions of the neck really well, you'll be able to find and move up the octave and play the same shape. Now the whole fretboard is covered!
10:53 - Next Steps
Remember root notes and learn your intervals!
12:30 - Performance
Now we'll put everything we learned into one guitar jam.

I'm a 74 year old beginner. Only learned about the pentatonic scales a couple months ago and have been practicing what you showed us in the beginning. I call myself old slow fingers. But one of the very first things I learned is that you can make real melodic sounds just by skipping around any of the scales. It impressed me so much that I believe what teachers say about scales being boring is b.s. I love doing scales, all of them. I began learning because I'm afraid that one of these days dementia may set in and after reading a piece on researchers who visited a nunnery found that some of the nuns who had alzheimers and dementia , showed no signs of it. They discovered that the nuns played scrabble, chess, and did crossword puzzles. I'll be practicing until my wife takes my guitar away from me.

I spend a lot of time floating about the minor pentatonic and blues scales and often get stuck playing the same thing over and over. This lesson has freed me and allowed me to use many more notes as well as adding a more fluid feel to my playing. Thank you so much! Bravo! Where were you and KZfaq 40 years ago when I started playing the guitar? It was such an overwhelming task to try to learn the 5 different pentatonic shapes and then just remember where the root was when you played in a different key! Needless to say I never mastered it. This is genius to only learn 2 shapes. Thank you and keep the lessons coming, please!

I have been playing for a long time and have had several bands. I do have to say that the teachers back then Never taught like you do. I thinks teachers back then made students give up the guitar. At 14 I was listening to Jimi Hendrix (My Favorite) and actually learned to play guitar from listening to him and then figuring the song out. I still have my 1968 Strat and several other guitars. Again, don't stop what you are doing. You are a Great teacher, writer and a Great Performer! love your songs! You Are Truly Talented and Gifted!... Hi Ayla. I stopped in to see this lesson, while doing a search and wanted to leave a comment. I have been playing for a long time and I also teach the guitar. I have been around some GREAT guitarists, because I used to do some agent work and set up concert events through my company back then, for people like Muriel Anderson, Stephen Bennett, Richard Smith, etc........so some great guitarists. There is a trick to teaching guitar and you have that knack. I just wanted to say good luck and I think people will really benefit by watching you, INCLUDING ME. I am always practicing to stay in shape. I am pretty old school, playing my own songs, as well as covering classic rock artists.

I totally agree. The first scale that I learned on guitar was the pentatonic scale and I approached exactly the same way. It's excellent advice for beginners and if you can find blues backing tracks in different keys, that's the fastest way to learn how to improvise and grow. Very nice lesson.

Been doing exactly this for 20+ years and never been held back by it. Sometimes I throw in some 3 note modes but I only know a couple of positions for those as well. Surprisingly, it never really gets boring either. There’s always something to work on

So easy to watch, listen to and learn. Always struggled with scales and just stuck to basic tablature because all the books I bought were so full of technical jargon it was off putting. This young lady makes sense and shows how to play it. I went to a guitar teacher years ago and he was frustrated with the tutorial books because he said as well that they weren't easy to comprehend

I respect what she’s saying, I’ve personally found just learning 3 note per string learning the major scale to be more eye opening. With that you also get all the modes related to the major scale, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, aeolian, Locrian, Ionian.

What a great lesson. I love the way you explained music theory in a nutshell. I love your advice on becoming proficient with a little bit and knowing it well. My approach to the Am Pentatonic scale is doing exactly what you just displayed. I am learning more techniques and I feel confident in my ability to solo. With Teachers like you on the internet I have been blessed with hard earned talent. It takes time and practice. How much effort and time have you put into your guitar skills?

@@CornDogAnimations I’ve a PRS SE 24 . Lovely thing, birthday present from wife and kids a few years ago when I was going to be the new ( fill in guitarist of choice here!) I failed miserably, but I’m trying to learn the notes on the fretboard and really master the pentatonic scale and the open chords- properly this time. Im 62 now, and I’m hoping that by my 65th, I’ll be passable. Im relaxing into it more, not trying to be Jimmy Page in 3 months anymore .

She is both a nuanced musician and an effective teacher. Guitareo has produced this well to be a good hang in a cool bedroom with a person who lives in a healthy zone. These are great videos and she's so wonderful and weirdly Canadian and cool. I really hope she gets to make all the music she's tapping in to. A positive vibe on a conflicted planet. Go forth, ATM! Good lesson. I learned the five pentatonic shapes a few decades ago but funny enough the two shapes you talk about here (including the extension on shape 1) are the two that I gravitate to and use the most. There's something about them individually and together that allows melodies and lines to just come out very naturally. More so than the other three shapes for some reason, at least for me. And as you point out, those two together allow you to cover the fingerboard.

When l started playing pentatonic lead about 40 years ago l soon realised that l was 'talking' and the root note was the 'subject' of my speech...
