Exactly. I saw the title "you've NEVER heard a choir like this" and I was like "Oh yeah?" And before the video even started playing, I saw "Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir" and I nodded my head and thought "Yep, I remember those mysterious Bulgarian voices." (For you young'uns, the recording that made this choir famous, "Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares," received a lot of favorable attention when it was released in the US in 1987.)

@justinstacey7005
@justinstacey7005 5 ай бұрын
2nds, 7ths, augmented, and diminished intervals are by definition dissonant and are present in all keys. What are you even saying? Literally in the 1st bar, on the 1st beat, the 2nd scale degree is sung over the tonic before it resolves stepwise to a more stable minor 3rd. Anyone with even basic aural skills would be able to identify "dissonance" as one of the most prominent features of this song.
@koreanname
@koreanname 5 ай бұрын
You are referring to dissonant intervals, not actual dissonance, the two are mutually exclusive. It literally resolves on the third note dude. You can even create dissonance with consonant intervals. Do you even know what dissonance means? It means lack of harmony between notes. Singing over a minor scale doesn't create dissonance, it creates harmony. There is no 'dissonance' going on.@@justinstacey7005

Singers are chosen from country villages for the beauty and openness of their voices, and undergo extensive training in the unique, centuries-old singing style. Influenced by Bulgaria's Thracian, Bulgarian, Ottoman and Byzantine history, their music is striking in its use of diaphonic singing and distinctive timbre, as well as its modal scales, unusual meters (such as 7/8, 9/8, and 11/8), and dissonant harmonies (abundant second, seventh, and ninth intervals). All of these are characteristic of Bulgarian folk music.

I have listened in awe to Bulgarian choral harmonies for forty + years, since discovering Les Mystères des voix Bulgares. Amazing singers like Yanka Rupkina, Stoyanka Boneva and Eva Gordeyeva (who formed the Trio Bulgarka). I’ve been lucky enough to attend many concerts given by these and other choirs. They’ve also worked with many well known artists, such as Kate Bush. The sound is so uniquely harmonic, it goes right through me. There are so many albums available, I would encourage everyone to buy, listen and be transported by this wonderful music. I’ll be ever grateful to have discovered it and have this sound in my life ❤

This had a profound impact on me in the early 1990's. This recording, in particular, I must have listen to this hundreds of times. But now seeing the video, oh boy, oh boy, what would I give to conduct such a vocal ensemble...

As a Dutchman not only heard it, I've sung it. It's not the harmonies that are the problem, it's the meters. Thirty years ago I sang in a choir specialised in Russian music, but with a change of director came a shift into Slavic music from the Balkans... that took some getting used to.

Mesmerisingly brilliant!! I feel transfixed when I listen to this choir, the complexity of their harmonies and the depth of tone is fascinating and wonderful. I listen often to feel that wonder, it's almost addictive!!!

I've got tons of samples of Bulgarian folk choir that I use in various production projects. It can really cut through a mix, and if you round off the high end a bit it makes for a very ethereal-sounding pad.

It's interesting how the mainstream consumers of music are starting to pick up on things like this. This song has been in Americans eyes since Zena Warrior Princess, and obviously it's much older than that, but suddenly people are like 'oh this is so new'. haha Glad you found it. I've done my best to share this exact video on social media and I suspect it's the reason Charles Cornell found it, and now you.

As a Bulgarian I’ve recognised motives from our folklore in a lot of Hollywood movies and western songs, I guess people just don’t realise what it is, we Bulgarians can pick it up from the first tone. There’s at least one big movie each year that uses Bulgarian songs. Last year it was in the opening scene of the Banshees of Inisherin. It’s always a cool surprise to hear it randomly like this and to see people appreciate our music.

Thank you for telling me where I had heard this before... obviously it is in loads of films and computer gam3 trailers and the title is bizarre clickbait, but Xena is probably the best known example.

There has never been a powerful or moving 2 minutes and 8 seconds of singing. Why it's so powerful..is hard to put into words. It would be wonderful to re-unite these beautfiul women at some point to conjure the magic once more. Thankyou ladies for briefly opening the Gates of Heaven for us mere mortals to witness!!
