Yes, it's been a while...
We are in the finishing phase of our album (woop!) and finally found some time to present to you a new episode of our mini series on 31 TET!
This time we'll inspecting scales in 31 TET.
Due to its step sizes differing from the "conventional" 12 TET semitones, 31 TET harbors many ways in which we can create scales and invites us to explore some exciting wormholes to which to travel...
The final episode of this series will launch very soon as well! So stay tuned :)

The video is so visually well done! Helped explain so much in such a concise way. And the Jazzy background music is at the perfect volume to not distract from the lesson. Guys, you may want to see my Theory if Pitch Psychology. I have spent many years showing that composers unconsciously choose certain keys for specific emotive effects. And is based on labeling, or understanding that our hearing is spectral. For example, Love Songs over and over get written in C major. And just as C is a very warm, robust, full note, I label this Red. The rest of the psychological spectrum follows as a parallel to the 12 colors on the color wheel. My findings are shocking. Si happy to have discovered your channel. Amazingly, this video of yours came up just after I re-watched one of my own videos, “How I See the Color Shapes When I Play the Piano!”

My favourite scale is formed by taking the smallest interval as the sixth root of (9/4) (which is two stacked fifths). In other words, it's sort of an equally tempered scale based on (9/4) instead of the octave (2). It makes a lovely sounding scale.

Amazing job guys. As an Arab, I wanted to ask if we could hear some examples of how harmony could be worked into Arabic music? I feel the microtonality of arabic music was only ever used as an ornament and never really formed the basis of any chord. Any counter examples?
@HearBetweenTheLines
@HearBetweenTheLines Жыл бұрын
Heyhey! As a half-Arab I asked myself the same thing! ;) I came to some conclusions that we've really only hinted at in the previous episode about the Blues. Here a glimpse into my thoughts: Basically, you could think about the first three notes of Bayati as the 10th, 11th and 12th overtone, so E F+ and G if your fundamental is C. That would mean that Bayati could be considered the third mode of the overtone scale? That also means you could harmonise it accordingly. This is not a traditional approach, so it will sound 'new' to both western and eastern ears, but I personally find this a very intruiging way of adding harmony to non western ... ehem... "scales" :)
@fouadbass
@fouadbass Жыл бұрын
@@HearBetweenTheLines Hey Rami, thank you for the response. What an interesting approach to Bayati. I've been experimenting with maqam Rast lately and I found that if you lower the Ed and Bd to Edb and Bdb, you can approximate the 29th partial and use it each as very bright m7(+30c), which makes for some really springy dom7 and emphatic m7 chords. Using these brighter m7 intervals, I can maintain the feel of Rast while also blending it well into western tertiary harmonies. I think this interval can be approximated also in 31-edo, AFAIK. Geile Videos Jungs. Ich freu' mich schon auf das Naechste :)

When I first built my harpsichord, I kept it tuned in quarter-comma meantone, changing between G# and A-flat as needed. When I got to playing around with microtonality on my DX7 in the late ‘80s, I found that 31-TET is indistinguishable (within a few cents) from that meantone, in that it includes the whole range of sharps and flats for whatever key one might like. In the meantime, I had played on a Fisk organ tuned in Werkmeister III, and decided that was a more practical setup, and I liked the different flavors of different keys for Baroque music. Composers then were exploiting those flavors in different well-temperaments.

I just have an electric guitar tuned to an open 7th chord with detuned 3rds & 7ths. I don't know why more people don't do it. I think Eddie Van Halen used to detune the B string as a 3rd (Unchained, Runnin' With the Devil). Who knows what's been done with other songs in open chord tunings or slide guitar (Creed? Rolling Stones?) D A D F# -15 cents (3rd) C -30 cents (7th) D

Great explanations. Appreciated. I have asked the same question under your latest IG post: how do you feel about the playability of the 31-TET guitar even it is a multi-scale instrument. The scales and chords are quite appealing. I am wondering how long it takes to play out those tunes on 31 TET guitar? Thanks.
@HearBetweenTheLines
@HearBetweenTheLines Жыл бұрын
I have a multiscale acoustic and a regularly scaled electric guitar and they feel relatively similar in my fingers. I think if you can play barré chords and know some patterns on a 12-TET instrument, you can get a feel for this kind of instrument in a month or two, which I found astounding, to be honest, but muscle memory is really strong, it seems. You'll have to come up with different fingerings for some chords, though, if you want to include notes from higher up the overtone series, maybe we'll make a video about that at some point... Did that answer your question? :)

It occurred to me that scales or chords that reach the octave not reaching the octave (or going past it) in 31-EDO may be a cause of the strange remodulations that creep into otherwise perfectly fine arrangements some videos feature of normally 12-EDO music in 31-EDO.
@HearBetweenTheLines
@HearBetweenTheLines Жыл бұрын
Totally, that can happen... It might be nice though! We did that a lot in our arrangement of Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed"! But sure, it makes things more complex and if that's not what you're going for you can use other tunings :)

@@HearBetweenTheLines . . . which makes me think of 24-EDO(*), 50-EDO(**), and 72-EDO(***) since they are even-numbered. Not sure if having an even or odd number of micro-steps also has something to do with this not-always-wanted migration, but it also has the benefit of including a perfect (unjust intonation, square root of 2) half-octave (which gets quite a bit of use in jazz). (*)not as many intervals in tune as 31-EDO, but chains of thirds go to the next octave, and easier to work in ensembles with existing 12-EDO instruments. (**)almost 2/7-comma meantone, so pretty good set of intervals more in tune than 12-EDO. Sure is hard on fretted instruments, though. (***)you get to choose whether your chains of thirds go to the next octave -- it has both just and unjust thirds of both types, and even works in ensembles with existing 12-EDO instruments. Sure is REALLY hard on fretted instruments, though, and is too big for even a Lumatone (unless maybe you turn it sideways to sacrifice octave compass for full coverage of micro-steps?).
