You NEVER Played This Fire Emblem Fates Version! 파이어 엠블렘 if
Message from LunarDave: This video will be talking about Fire Emblem Fates' Korean version. There are lots of interesting tidbits I've found while playing and researching the game. If you found any errors be sure to comment down below and I'll be sure to make a pinned comment with errors listed. If you want to keep up with what I'm up to, my discord or twitter account is plenty!
I also want to mention I'm aiming to make videos weekly or as often as I can before I begin community college again. I want to aim to get 1000 subs and hopefully get monetized and if I do, it'll go a long way to help support me, but if you want to support me direct, a patreon donation would be much appreciated!

Oddly enough, Social Knight is how the cavalier class had been called in japanese since the very first game.

Makes sense, I've heard some peeps talking abt how some fe6 translations had social knight instead of cav

I think the class name disparity is actually an attempt to carry over the fact that, in the Japanese version, Hoshidan class names are all written in kanji, while Nohrian class names are all written in English transcribed into katakana, presumably as yet another way of reflecting the cultural differences between the two countries. It's a cool detail that didn't quite get carried over in the English localization, which is inconsistent about whether Hoshidan class names are translated or romanized but leans towards the former.

That does seem like it could be the case! It's always interesting to see how things carry over from one culture to another!
@weepingdalek2568
@weepingdalek2568 7 ай бұрын
Yeah that was my first thought too, since Nohr is more European whereas Hoshido is more Japanese Best the English version does is using more Japanese terms for Hoshidan classes (for instance Samurai instead of Myrmidon or Onmyoji instead of Sage) sometimes

I speak german and I think its funny how some names need to be changed in the translation to accomodate them having an actual meaning. Like Duessel is changed to Duenell cause the way you pronounce it in german it would mean something like klutz or goof or Haar is changed to Darahan otherwise I would have a guy named hair in my army killing everyone

@@weepingdalek2568 In Fire Emblem Awakening, « Cherche » is named « Zelcher » in french because « Cherche » means « Search ». Never heard people mentionning it but on the same way, Lon’qu is Lon’zu, because Lon’qu could be read as « Long Ass » 😁

* Dussel is how it is romanized in japanese and THAT is the word for klutz. Duessel is a real surname, that is why it was changed. One letter diffrence makes a lot of diffrence sometimes. Also, I wish they just directly translated Mist over. A character called "Nebel" would be hilarious.

Glad to see a video on the Korean version. When first heard about this version some time ago I was ticked they didn’t just release the game like this in the first place everywhere instead of the weird release model we got that just made me not get the game after not being able lock in a special edition for myself. At first I simply thought the reason the game uses English voices which would include the English versions of songs is because the song Lost in Thoughts All Alone has some weird legal thing. That’s a reason why we couldn’t use Japanese voices outside Japan. I then got very confused by what’s going with the game sometimes having English voices and sometimes having Japanese voices.

Glad it seems like you enjoyed it! And yeah it's still weird to me in regard to the jp voice rom version. I'm 99 percent sure it's a patched edition that happens to be the most readily accessible esp since Koreans tend to prefer original dubs but whoever did it is a mystery to me.

I don't blame you since the console market in Korea and games like FEif usually don't get advertised THAT much unless you watched copious amount of TV over there. But I 100 percent had the same reaction along with it also being Korea's first FE :o

I got into Fire Emblem with Awakening about when Fates came out since I didn't know each game was seperate and thought Fates looked really cool. I hold that game close to me since I have so many memories and hours poured in. That being said, I really liked your video. I don't know a lot about viideo games in other parts of the world like Korea, but it was very interesting.

Reminds me of booting up Shadows of Valentia for the first time and being surprised the dialogue was translated to dutch (something new for the series). The translation fluxuated between being rather a poor 1:1 to having a bit more creative liberties with the flavor to make up for things that would be lost in translation or to have dialogue feel less stiff. The audio is still english but that is fine i wasn't expecting it in the first place If are the kind of person to laugh your ass off looking at the dutch language and you ever feel like replaying Shadows of Valentia then its a really funny experience to play it like this (just set your system language to dutch on an European 3DS or emulator)

It’s kind of sad that out of all the Fire Emblem games Fates is the first one to be localized in Korea tbh.
@thepheeesh
@thepheeesh 2 ай бұрын
I know you more or less say it at the end. But basically it sounds like the reasoning for all the stuff dialogue and odd class names is primarily due to it not actually being the Korean version, but the Japanese rom translated to Korean. Which tracks as you see a lot of similar vocabulary in English roms of the older Fe games too. I wonder if there's an actual rom of the Korean version out there and if it actually uses the international naming scheme like using "corrin" and "Cavalier"

I thought the import ban was completely lifted in 2004
@LunarDave
@LunarDave 4 ай бұрын
This is true! The trade ban was only partially lifted in 1998, which allowed some releases to be pushed to the Korean market. 2004 did have the import trade ban fully lifted and Nintendo then officially started in 2006 fully formed as Nintendo of Korea. I think I may have mixed details looking at the script rn, or felt 2006 was more relevant to my brain at that time (it's been a little bit since I've made the script of this video) it was even in the sources I used so definitely should still have mentioned it lol!

Do you think Korea (at least South Korea) should start using using written hanja again? Kind of like how Japan uses both Kana and Kanji in their written language.
@LunarDave
@LunarDave 4 ай бұрын
To be frank I not am fluent enough to say whether they should or not since there are nuances I haven't build up the vocabulary for as of yet. But given the fact that JP uses several alphabets tends to be a harder barrier to get through compared to just 1 with Hangul, where Hanja is moreso a legacy thing, I think we're fine as is. Hangul typically doesn't occupy more space than Hanja 99 percent of the times I've seen it (usually written on signs along with Hangul) and there are ppl who lived in Korea much longer than I have who most definitely haven't learned much Hanja. Hangul is a pretty approachable language and that is sort of the appeal especially since it was created to BE approachable and all. Again, I thiiiink for the most part I see no need to heavily reincorporate it unless I'm missing something! :)
