The Philly Captain

Күн бұрын

Come sail with The Captain as he walks Rick The Puppy through the streets of Frankford. The Captain made a few friends who are in The Frankford Historical Society. They told him some stories that he could not believe he never knew before. They told him about how important Frankford Ave and who used to travel on it. The Captain learned about the term "The Frankford Advice" and the important location that advice was given in. He sees a graveyard older than the United States and so much more. Here is a link to The Historical Society Of Frankford www.thehistoricalsocietyoffra... or add them on Facebook here / historicalsocietyoffra... Here is a link to the Civil War Museum garmuslib.org/ and the link to the movie The Kings Highway kingshighwayfilm.com/

I used to shop at that supermarket at Bridge and Pratt. I lived on the Boulevard by Oxford Circle. I sold my house and left Philly 20 years ago and moved to another state. That area never looked that bad. And the videos I see of k&A are shocking.

The building with the fancy windows was in lathe 1960’s a Sears surplus store. On same block there was Abbott and Cobb seed store( still in business elsewhere). Across the street in the early ‘60’s was a social security office and a western savings bank

I'm retired from the Philly Fire Dept. They were called hose towers. Yes. you are correct, they no longer use them. Now they use hose dryers. They roll the hoses up and place them into these dryers.

Thank you Captain, sir. I absolutely love when you do videos on our city’s (or anywhere) history!! You’re a really entertaining and good teacher. Btw, fun fact: General George Meade designed and built the Cape May Lighthouse in 1859 (actually, the 3rd to be built on Cape May Point:). General Meade was an engineer before the civil war. More history please…😊😊

Hey Captain, love your videos! I grew up in Lawndale (Oakley & Martins Mill rd) I remember you at the corner deli when I bought Penny candy and lunch meat. It's sadly now a WAWA. But your videos always cheer me up, your voice takes me back to the good days in Lawndale. Captian, keep up the great work, Long Live Philly!!!

Yes, Lawndale and Lawncrest is almost the same neighborhood@@jillammons1548 Lawncrest is mostly row homes. Lawndale is mostly old single and twin homes. They also have separate elementary schools. Most kids from Lawndale go to Cedar Grove or Presentation BVM (Cheltenham township) Kids in Lawncrest went to St. Williams on Rising Sun Ave

The building that you showed that was the old theatre was for years a horn and Hardarts . It was cafeteria style , and it was a thrill as a child to go up the big staircase to eat in what once was the balcony.. I took pictures of the brick work from the el platform a few weeks ago.

There used to be a colonial mansion named Chalkley Hall built in 1743 right where the Walmart is today on Aramingo and Whatsheaf Lane. It was there up until the 1930’s when it was knocked down, but the doors from the mansion are still down at Winterthur or the Metropolitan museum of Art. The pictures of it are fascinating, considering what the site is today.

Ahoy Captain! Great video, as usual. Interesting how those ancient buildings still exist but have been left in disrepair. Hopefully, some day they will be rehabbed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One last note, condolences to Philly over the recent loss of QB Norm Snead. He played on some weak Iggles & Jints clubs or his career stats would have been significantly higher. He was reputed to be one real classy guy.

Hey captain I love big old buildings built out of brick rock stones the way they used to put a lot of detail and craftsmanship in them the bigger the better, especially the ones built before they were electricity thinking about having to cut the trim and each A perfect vacation to me would be going in giant buildings and exploring themif you can go inside some big buildings and film the inside.

Thumbnail is of the aftermath of a Batman fight. The good 1960's version where the rooms get destroyed in every episode. And thinking about the old shop-rite there, I'd like to go into a supermarket with big windows like that sometime versus these newer basements we get. I'm sure I've been in one of those designs, but I don't remember it.

That roof style was the trademark architecture of Penn Fruit Company. I stood on the sidewalk with my older sister in or around 1960 and watched the roof burn. It was a remarkable fire and the building was saved by the Philadelphia Fire Department. It was rebuilt and restored immediately. Across the street was an old A&P store, Penn Fruit’s competitor. My mother preferred shopping at A&P. We lived on the corner of Duffield and Fillmore in Frankford until 1962.

Most of those towers were so the fireman could sit up there and look for fires, “Fire Watch”. There weren’t many homes with telephones. So that is how they would find fires.
