Today we're in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, in search of one of Kenya's elusive leopards. We've already been in the Masai Mara for two days and seen some incredible wildlife sightings, but one of my favourites has so far managed to avoid us. For my final 2 days in the Masai Mara, I'm hoping my dream of stumbling across one of the Mara's leopards will come true.

It really was a magical moment! Yes, leopards have distinct territories (although they do overlap at points) - that makes identifying them easier as the guides know which individuals hold each territory.

Nice video Ella! I’m excited on our June 7 days African Safari experience in Kenya. Can I ask if drone is legal to be flown? Or do you need to pay or get license or something? I saw you have some drone footages. I’m planning to bring my drone too.😊
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick 9 күн бұрын
I hope you have an amazing trip! Taking a drone to Kenya is actually very challenging. They have strict rules on 'importing' so I'd recommend not bringing one at all. You can rent one instead eg AA Lodge in Amboseli allows you to rent drones and they come with necessary permits to fly in Amboseli NP. To fly in the Masai Mara you would need permits to fly there. Otherwise you'll have to fly outside of national parks which is actually where these shots were taken.

If I’m looking to take some good photos in general, is an iPhone 14 good for a safari?
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick 2 ай бұрын
iPhones are fantastic at taking photos and videos! The only problem on safari is that some of the wildlife sightings can be quite far away (like the cheetah family in this video) and only a long zoom lens will be able to do those sightings justice. However, the animals are used to vehicles so it's normal to see quite a few close to the roads. An iPhone would have been more than sufficient to capture photos of this leopard sighting for example. So, long story short, for the close wildlife sightings it will do a great job but may struggle with capturing animals that are far away.

Great video! As a piggyback on the earlier question, I have an old Canon digital camera which can go to an 84x digital zoom. I presume that will get me by? Certainly I don't expect a National Geographic level picture, but will it be good enough for amateur grade photos?

There were definitely times where I felt stressed by the sheer number of vehicles piling on a sighting in the Masai Mara. In that respect the Serengeti is much better as it has stricter rules around going off-road and the roads are few and far between which means animals can't get crowded. I've heard a lot of positive things about Botswana too - it's very high on my list.
