Brad Dourif is so damn good in this, I gained so much respect for him as an actor from this movie. That hospital scene is still one of the most terrifying scenes of all time, the tension build up to the imagery is amazing.

Brad Dourif did the Hannibal stare before A Hopkins and there is some reference to his others movie , hes in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and again in hospital settings , Chucky , Child play 2 did come out same year , he did 7 movies in 1990 The University President (Lee Richardson) , who says he likes movie fly , was in Fly 2 (1989)

@@OpenMawProductionsit really isnt bad at all. I think some people just struggle forming unique opinions. I find it super similar to the 3rd film in pretty much every way but for some reason this one is praised but that one is hated. I do think this film is scarier, but i think thats because the second film is going for a eurohorror style vs american horror which is very loud and blatant and violent. Again though, i find the second and third movie super similar in visuals and story just the second one more subtle and i dont think it deserved the hate. EDIT: Not that people cant dislike things that i like or vise versa, but the comments that hate on exorcist 2 are always super vague and dont mention any reasons for it being bad? and then when they talk about this one being good all they talk about is the jumpscare. It makes you wonder if they really watched them.

Brad Dourif should have got an Oscar nomination for this. They never give them to horror films and frequently not to the people and films which deserve them. The exorcist three has to be on the list of most underrated horror films.

@@jimmy2k4o All except the first exorcist weren’t really horror films though. Not in the supernatural sense. There were scares in them but not true horror films in the way they almost never acknowledge sci-fi either.

@@jmo8934 I don’t think a film needs to be supernatural to be a horror. I definitely consider misery to be horror. Silence of the lambs I don’t consider a horror, I consider it a detective story but many do consider it horror. The better argument would be how my examples are from 30 years ago. I agree the Oscars are too snobby for horror or else hereditary and Toni collet would have at least been nominated. Now the Oscar’s are political, they reward movies based on the messages they push not based on how good the film is. They used to go by the best movie but only from a selection that conforms to their snobby standards so horror and sci fi don’t get a chance. For example Brad Pitt won in 2019 for once upon a time in Hollywood, but he also made ad astra in 2019 and I think his performance in astra was better. Sunshine was also really underrated. Gravity got nominated while Interstellar didn’t. Get Out got two nominations and one win. But that’s not because it’s good which it is, it’s because it was a “woke” movie.

Big props to the Mrs for recognizing Patrick Ewing as an angel! Samuel L Jackson also has a cameo in that dream sequence as the blind guy with the headphones. Doesn't look too familiar but that voice is still iconic

So the actress who played Kinderman's wife: Zohra Lampart starred in her own scary movie, back in 1971; where she played the title character in 'Let's Scare Jessica to Death.' It's a very atmospheric and creepy film about a woman recovering from a mental breakdown who moves to a farm house, with her husband and a couple friends. One of my favorite indie weird films.

This film is a seriously underrated masterpiece in my opinion. George C Scott gives another brilliant performance and the dialogue between him and Ed Flanders (Father Dyer) provides witty light relief. Interesting fact. The priest who chose "The Fly" as a favourite movie played Bartok in The Fly II (1989). He was played by Lee Richardson.

Funny thing, this film was originally going to simply be called Legion, the title of the book, the director wanted it to stand on its own from the first film hence why the actors were different. The studio forced it to be called Exorcist 3, then they did reshoots to include the actor who played Damien when it was originally just Brad Dourif in the cell scenes, and they also added the exorcism at the end since they couldn't call it Exorcist 3 if there was no exorcism, hence why it seems out of nowhere when the priest shows up. The original ending was simply after the attempt made on his daughter's life, George C. Scott goes into the cell and just shoots Brad Dourif, no flashy visuals or anything. Ironically them changing the name to try and have it do better lead to it not doing that well, people saw it was called 'Exorcist 3' and thought they were just milking the original into an unnecessary franchise, especially given how bad the second film was people weren't interested in this one. Thankfully it's got more recognition over time.

If they watched that whole scene in complete silence as one does in the theater, I'm sure they would have jumped. But talking through parts of it diminishes the tension. Seeing horror movies in a lighted room also doesn't help. A fully dark room/theater increases the terror.

This movie is brilliant. So glad you liked it. Saw it in the theaters. That hospital scene had the whole audience scream at the end. Such beautiful suspense with the locked off camera shot. George C. Scott is amazing. Check him out in Patton. Brad Douriff should have won an award for this. Great direction and editing too. Ed Flanders just came off of a 6 year stint on the TV show, St. Elsewhere before doing this. I love their dialogue.

The scariest part of the film was the old lady crawling on the ceiling. That terrified me as a kid. That scene stands out the most to me.

What makes that so effective is how its frame. She's just up there, crawling around. THe music doesn't draw attention to it, they don't ZOOM IN ON IT. She's just like a spider or something, just crawling around.

Brad Dourif should have won an Oscar for his performance here. The greatest portrayal of evil and madness ever filmed. This entire movie is a slow burn that really pays off in the end.

I'll never forget when i rented this on vhs back in 95 for Halloween, and watched it on my own, at 13, in the dark, in my cousins massive farmhouse in the middle of nowhere - it scared the shit out of me! Watched the Shining after it; what a combination. Didn't sleep much that night 🤣

I love this movie. It's my favorite of the Exorcist series. Another film that often gets spoken in the same breath as this one is Jacob's Ladder, which released in the same year as this. When I think of this movie I can't help but also think of Jacob's Ladder even though the story is completely different. The overlap lies in the exploration of the protagonist(s) struggles with demons, though the methods and their outcomes are very different. I really recommend it.

Most people don't get it when they see this movie. Kinderman is talkin' to Patient X, he sees Damien Karris (Jason Miller), 'cause it's his body, but its soul is actually the Gemini Killer (Brad Dourif).

So you could be right and its just the Gemini killers spirit in him but I think I heard years ago it was both of them torturing damein. Think its definitely pazuzu at the end in damein who says to the priest this time you'll lose or he said this time you won't win but I could be wrong I don't know.

Not "WAP", but "WOP". It's an older offensive term for With-out-Papers, and it was used for immigrants--particularly Italian immigrants. As with most offensive terms of the past, it was a way people could euphemistically sneer at foreigners without seeming hateful. George C. Scott was using the line here to mock the small-minded bigotry of the other fellows. --PSA provided by the Association to Preserve Historical Discomforts.

I find that a lot of viewers get confused about the transition between Karras and the Gemini. The bit of "movie language" that tells you it happened is the extreme zoom on the eyes (or lips in the case of a language switch), then pulling back.

George c Scott wasn't in the original neither was Ed Flanders (Father Dyer) but that was Jason Miller from The Exorcist as Damien Karras. This is a much underrated sequel, the tacky Exorcism at the end was tagged on due to Studio hierarchy being foolish and saying you can't have a sequel to The Exorcist and not have an Exorcism in it. Was not meant to be in it originally. Brad Dourif was astounding in this, award worthy performance.

For a real mindbend: Another Lee J Cobb/George C Scott connection is "12 Angry Men". Cobb played the angry father juror in the Lumet version. Scott played same role in TV remake directed by..... William Friedkin. Cue Oldfield's music.

This film didn't make many waves back in the day, but looking back at it in context you can really see how it was a precursor to all the dark, semi-horror police procedurals like Silence of the Lambs and Se7en that dominated the 90s. A real overlooked gem.

Ed Flanders, who played Father Dyer, was on a tv show called, St. Elsewhere where he played Dr. Donald Westphall. He was also in the made for tv movie Salem's Lot.

Pazuzu was stuck in Damien Karras when Damien attempted suicide. At the same time, The Gemini Killer was being executed, but rather than passing on, Pazuzu used his power to plant the Gemini Killer's soul into the dead Damien. This brought Damien back from death, but the damage from his fall from Regan's house down the stairway left him brain dead. So for the next 15 years, Damien was locked away, and Pazuzu had to wait for his powers to mend Damien's mind and body. In that time, he and Gemini came up with a plan to continue the serial killings using Damien, hence reaping vengeance against the church by causing a scandal of a priest committing these brutal murders.

"Exorcist III" is a masterpiece, and as much a masterpiece in it's own way as the original. Every single aspect is virtually perfect....the entire cast is unbelievably flawless, the cinematography, the score, Blatty's writing and direction, and most especially the SOUND DESIGN! For sheer entertainment and enjoyment of watching I prefer this to the original. Incidentally, the voice of the demon was provided by the brilliant actress, Colleen Dewhurst, who was one of George C. Scott's ex-wives.

A couple of tidbits of info. The book to this movie is so much more tense and suspenseful and is named 'Legion'. The detective from the Exorcist is the same character as in Exorcist III but the actor had sadly died so they drafted in George C Scott and (I think) the actor who played Dyer in the original (and took Karras' absolution) was either unavailable or had died so was played by the older actor. This is an amazing performance by Dourif and Scott. Incidentally, in the book, the 'area of corruption' spread by Pazzuzu through the Gemini Killer erodes the resistance of the catatonic patients and the staff. This made them easier to possess. There are a few changes to the source material which makes this film more marketable but sadly more jump scarey. Still, an excellent film. If you want another excellent George C. Scott horror then I can recommend 'The Changeling (1980)'. It's a haunting and there's no gore, no bad language, and no violence but is the most frightening film I've seen apart from the film 'Kairo' (or Pulse in English).

Fun fact time! The old guy who says his favourite flick was the fly goes on to play the main bad guy in the fly 2!! Its actually pretty decent. Eric Stolz plays the 🪰 son of Seth & Veronica.

You two should watch The Ninth Configuration which isn't strictly a horror but is actually the first sequel to the Exorcist.. I know there's an Exorcist 2, but Ninth configuration was actually the second part of Blatty's faith trilogy, Exorcist 3 Legion being the third part.. The only recurring character being Captain Cutshaw the Astronaut seen at the party sequence from The Exorcist in the scene where Regan say "your gonna die up there"!

i watched this when i was about 12 and that bit with the young nurse in the corridor terrified me! it still does oh god. must be one of the biggest jump scares in any movie, it certainly is for me. waaa

I'm so happy to see you both watching this movie. The end of the original movie (the exchange between the priest and detective) shows the beginning of a friendship which plays such a big role in the third movie. This movie also sports one of cinema's best choreographed suspense moment in the hospital mostly using a wide angle master shot that is brilliant.

Another recommended watch from the same writer/director is The Ninth Configuration. It has one of the best slow burns and is very funny and dark in a super-quirky way. It's a certified cult classic about a new psychiatrist taking charge of a military facility for servicemen are either crazy or acting crazy to get out of service. It also has Ed Flanders in it as well as Scott Wilson and it stars Stacey Keach. Stick with it and you'll both enjoy where this movie takes you.

"Patrick Ewing?" Yup. So much is added to this film by peripheral interactions and small walk on parts by the nurses and other "extra" characters,. It also provided an opportunity for older actresses to deliver outstanding performances.

There aren’t many horror films that can compete with the original, but Exorcist III is very close. Although the original is a better made movie, I think I can watch this more often, kind like Psycho and Psycho 2, another criminally underrated sequel. As for favourite scene, hell, anytime Brad Dourif is on screen…..although I do love the conversation about the carp.

George C Scott took over for Lee J Cobb who had passed away since the first film's release. Ed Flanders is playing Father Dyer, who was actually played by a real priest in the original film.

The Exorcist III scared the shit out of me back when I was in high school. I remember watching it in my buddy's living room while he and his mother were asleep. It was around 2AM in the morning and dead quiet. Nothing but the glow of that giant CRT TV and pending trauma. The unsettling quiet in that movie, the imagery, and the brilliant performances by Brad Dourif and George C. Scott make this one of my favorite horror films and definitely my favorite Exorcist movie. I do love the original Exorcist but it's Exorcist III all day every day for me.

27:47 -- in 1995, we had this on laserdisc and a killer home theater. We'd put that scene on and show people for the first time, with the volume cranked way up. We were mean.

I'm one of those who prefer this one over the original. I watched the original when I was 13 and found it kind of goofy. Probably because I'm not religious and just find the extreme depictions of exorcisms in films a bit funny. But this one I watched around the same time and it scared the absolute shit out of me. It's fantastic, and George C. Scott and Brad Dourif chew the damn scenery!

You will love this film. More a psychological thriller with a dash of existential horror thrown in. Excellent casting. It was released the same weekend as Goodfellas in 1990.

Ms. Movie, you said that the priest at the end looked familiar. Father Morning was played by Nicol Willamson who you should know if you saw this famous movie from 1981 called Excalibur. He played Merlin.

You want a really great miniseries to watch check out "Penny Dreadful". Its only 3 seasons long with about 9 or 10 episodes per season its quite good, the originater of the series also wrote most of the movie The last Samarai. Eva Green was made for this role or vice-versa.

Lee J. Cobb played the original Kinderman. But i think he had passed away when this was made. The actor who played Father Karras was actually not supposed to be in this because he was doing another movie. Brad Dourif actually played Father Karras throughout the whole movie when it was made. But the studio decided to hire the original actor after the movie was already finished, reshot some scenes, and stuck him in there to play Father Karras anyway, and Dourif would just be playing the "face" of the Gemini Killer. That's why those scenes were confusing in the beginning.

3:28 It took me years of watching this movie (and actually visiting Georgetown and standing right there) to notice this shot is the original Exorcist House on the right, and if you keep walking straight ahead you'll encounter The Staircase.
