Figs, Pigs and Feathers

The younger ducklings are 7 weeks old an DC out for some fun with their parents. The ducklings were incubator hatched and raised separately from the parents, though they were able to see each other. While not their first encounter with each other, there haven't been many occasions to join up in a single group.

I incubated some Rouen ducklings. I am curious and can’t find the answer, they are getting their first real feathers, they’re just over 3 weeks old. All three have feathers coming in brown like hens…. do they all get brown feathers looking like hens first and then molt later and get true hen vs drake coloring? I really don’t think there is anyway I lucked out and got all hens. But I did with my last chicken incubator hatch and I thought for sure there wasn’t anyway that could be right.

The things to watch for are leg and bill color. Males will tend toward a greener color bill and brighter color legs. Curly tail feathers are a sure indicator. Younger ones tend to look the same color with the feathers. As they mature, the males will start to get a bit of a white collar and then go on to a full white color and green head. After mine molted the first time the males lost both the collar and the green. It was quite a few months before the colors came back, but have since kept the collar and green head. -- If you find what you did with that incubator hatch to get all hens I'm sure we all would love to know! Thanks for watching.

@@figspigsandfeathers8179 okay. I’m having a hard time distinguishing much difference between my three. My guess at the beginning was 2 drakes, 1 hen bc two were dark and one was slightly more brown in color and just a bit smaller. I appreciate your response. Makes no difference at this point I’m keeping them all. So I should just be patient and wait, but that’s soooo hard 😂

How do you like the Rouens? I am looking to expand largely on my ducks. Currently house 14 egg laying hens and 3 Pekin drakes. One Silver Appleyard duckling is being raised in the house at moment. I am highly considering this breed to raise as meat and small egg production. I hear this breed is extremely flavorful yet takes a little longer than the Buffs or Pekin. Beautiful flock, pleasure to watch.

I like the Rouens. I have Pekins a couple of Runners and a Silver Welsh Harlequin. The Rouens are tasty but not as big as the Pekins.The Pekins bully the other ducks. I had to separate the Runners to protect them. Both are drakes so I had to move a couple of the Rouen ducks in with them so they would leave the chickens alone. Rouens are productive layers during the warmer months.

@@figspigsandfeathers8179 thank you for that valuable first hand experience. My three Pekin drakes bully the feathers right off of one another. I have them kept separate after losing one of my hens to their ways. Hard learning experience. I'm leaning towards either Rouen or Silver Appleyard. Guess time will tell! Thanks again.

Don't you have a bigger pond for the ducks ?
@figspigsandfeathers8179

I do have a larger in ground pond, but it is seasonal and hasn't sealed yet. I have a larger, deeper plastic pond and some of the accessories to put together a swirl filter. Longer term goal is to have the plastic pond inside a duck pen and open that into an orchard for the ducks, and for the dirty duck water to feed the trees in the orchard.
