So true how quick people are to jump to "He must be in pain/ have been abused/ be on the wrong feed etc" when horses have big reactions either on the ground or under saddle. Its perfectly normal for a horse to have a big flight reaction to a new stimulus, which if he's a baby or green older horse, is pretty much everything we do to them. All most horses need is time to learn about the new thing and get ok with it

I love it because it always comes back to the same fundamental basics.

I use a fly spray that mainly consists of garlic. Smells horrible, but it keeps the flies away (and other people too).

I wished I had your videos to watch 30 years ago, Ryan. I had a rescue horse, who had been abused prior to my getting him, so building trust was a bit more difficult than it would have been, had I started the horse myself. Even so, your training methods are superb. The best I could ever manage with fly spray on my horse was to use Swat around the ears and eyes, spray his fly mask before putting it on him, and rubbing him down with fly spray using a rag over his entire body. I also used flea power on the inside of his legs to ward off ticks, since we did considerable trail riding and ticks love to nest in that area.

Another great video, I use fly predators, homemade fly spray (apple cider vinegar, an organic shampoo (I use Espana Silk) and essential oils - citronella, tea tree, lemon grass) The recipe can be easily found online. I also use traps and good manure management. Thanks!

A tip is to start spray the tale. Everyday do it a part of groom routine, and then work your way forward a liiiiittle bit each day. I did that with so many, works everytime.

Great video! One reminder is that many fly sprays should not be used on foals under 6 months (the labels of commercial fly sprays contain warnings but it's the fine print!). Babies can be very sensitive to many fly products, including natural plants oils like tea tree oil and cedar oil. I had a friend whose filly was losing all her hair from her head. Turns out she was getting the tea tree oil they were using as a "natural" fly repellent on her face from her mother while she was nursing. It was actually burning the filly's sensitive skin. I told them to stop using the product and sure enough the filly's hair grew right back. As for me I try to minimize use of fly products by timing turnout, e.g. bring horses in at dusk when mosquitoes are really bad, picking pastures daily, using fly masks, or using the product just in the spots that particular fly species target. For example in the ears and under the mane for no-see-ums and gnats in the spring, on the chest and ventral midline for horn flies in summer. But if it's really, really bad I use whatever is needed! Equicare Flysect Super-7 is my favorite commercial brand...it really lasts.

I rotate *Bye Bye Flies ( Spaulding brand) *Piranha *Endure ( has peppermint for cooling effect) *Mixture of Skin So Soft/ tiny bit Pine Sol and water I spread Fly Predators and harrow the poop frequently in the pasture Great useful video! Polly and Rosie aren’t fans of fly spray.

I use a deet based product, usually from Naf, not sure if it’s a UK only brand but is good. I have used this process on all my horses and can now spray them all at liberty. I added another step in which is to make a shoosh shoosh sound similar to the spray sound which tells them what’s coming before I actually spray, it lets me know where they are at on that day and saves me spraying and missing the target area. I look for cedar oil as one of the top ingredients. I also like to use a small, maybe 2" circular sponge to apply to the face and ears. You can usually find these at any tack/feed store. Keep up the good work!

I use on me and my horses [especially while I ride] a mix of lemongrass ESSENTIAL OIL. Mixed with water just up to ten drops for a normal size spray bottle. Works great on gnats especially. Not long terms but safe. I CARRY A SMALL METAL BOTTLE IN MY SADDLE BAGS SMELLS WONDERFUL.

what a sweet young horse, scary to see the extra length of the rope halter that could accidentally hit him in the eye, might seem nothing at the time except the irritation may cause rubbing all night and then you do have a significant injury.

I'll try this! Water is a. great idea also because nobody wants to waste expensive fly spray to train a horse to accept the spray. Duh! Should have thought of that myself. Best for ticks, mixing ROSE GERANIUM essential oil with water or using coconut oil as barrier if wiping it on the horse (or self) with hands. Ticks hate the smell and everyone at the barn will ask you what smells so good! You and your horse will smell like you came from the spa!

Guess I was a fly in a past life. I'd rather *die* than smell citronella. Can't even take a citronella candle.

I've used repelx for over 40 years. Also kills any ticks. Smells not so bad... My horses don't object. It's a concentrate so I save a bit by diluting it myself.

I like how many flies the fly sticky paper catches… called Giant Fly Glue Trap by Catchmaster. It’s amazing. Especially when the sun hits it in the late morning… they almost all come and land on it! I learned to put the paper in a spot the horses can’t reach… and have developed a little permanent place to put it so the wind doesn’t make it stick to itself. But that stuff works! Now as a fly spray, I use pyranha… it stops the chaos, and stinking flies from eating my horses for about 2 days.

I love your yearling fly spray video! I use smartpak smart itch supplement which contains garlic powder, apple cider vinegar, and turmeric root powder. I also like bye bye fly garlic flakes too. I use farnam fly sprays because I use their coupons. I like Endure the best. I also put fly “stopper” around my manure pile, which eats fly larva. 🦄 Susan

I like belly balm. I rub it on all the major spots that the flys and gnats bother them. I do have fly spray but it doesn’t seem to work as good. I also use shoo fly boots .

My program now is fly predators in season, keeping manure mostly picked up, fly masks when those are present (neighbors have cattle), and my two present fav fly repellents are EcoVet and the Bye Bye Insects from Spalding. I also use Swat repellent wound ointment on my young horse if his sweet-itch gets bad enough that he chews himself sore.

Ditto for suddenly skipping over the rest of spring and hitting the toggle switch for summer heat! I've been using Pyranha. It repels well for awhile, citronella-scented and the lanolin gives them a shiny slick coat, but you have to apply it everyday and it seems to lose it's effectiveness before the day is even over. (Pyranha has great ratings from other users claiming 24 hours of effectiveness, that's just not my experience so I suspect there's some variable in play.) Once upon a time I diluted a concentrate normally mixed with diesel for cattle rubs. It lasted for days and was economical for that reason. I can't recall the name but I'll recognize it when I see it in our ag store and might like to use that again. A popular one is Bronco and I have no idea how it ever caught on. Perhaps I got a bad batch, but biting flies were literally landing in the still wet solution like it was water. I got lucky with a mare that wasn't having a spray despite putting in some amount of work to desensitize her. (She's bold and easy with everything else, so don't ask me where her spray issue came from. 🤷‍♂) By luck, she's also an over-the-top pig for treats and sweet feed. She'd lift her head and take one step back, but fat chance she'd actually abandon her sweet feed when I started spraying. A few days of that and she was finally over the threshold of any worry about spraying.

I use the chemical Pyranha fly spray and Pyranha all natural fly spray. I also use swat around wounds and sometimes face area's. Thank you for the video on fly spray.

Use fly predators out in the pastures and around the manure pile. I hang fly traps on stall doors. Wash the horses once a week in equiderma neem shampoo. I only spray my horses legs with fly spray. What I wish they’d come up with is something to combat sand gnats. Nothing gets rid of them. I have to use fly masks, full body and neck fly sheets and fly boots and they still get under there to bite. If anyone has any ideas I’m all ears.

We just started Ultra Shield this year but we we've previously used a home remedy based spay with garlic and essential oils which I think works but we want to compare both sprays.

If you start at the feet/legs, rather than the body, horses are much more accepting of bathing with a hose and fly spraying.

Great info Ryan. I’m working with a horse right now that was well trained, sat for 5 years and picked up allllll the bad habits. Basically a brat. Do you have videos on getting a horse to HOLD STILL within reason? Even when she’s tied up she moves and nudges and swings her butt back and forth parallel to the tie. She never stops. I’m making good headway in the round pen and teaching her manners and to respect the bubble. Any tips from anyone are welcomed!

I'm from U.K, we don't have the choices here of certain ingredients that our best fly repellents used to be made of because of European laws imposed on us at the time, so we resorted to farm livestock sprays for cattle and "witches brew", that we could get separate ingredients and mix ourselves for horses and us too, but, permethrin was banned as an active fly deterrent so we made a variation of essential oils ,apple cider vinegar, Deet, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus Oil, which worked to a point, the best i find that works is Deosan that you mix with water as directed, i spray it on saddle cloths my jeans, jackets and hat too if horse fly's are new after rain, on the horse it lasts for days. Also people that feed concentrates that have even small amounts of any sort of sugar ,syrup, and molasses, this includes fibre blends too, are sweetening the horses blood which can attract biting insects, this was found to be the case for sweet itch midges on horses. Hope this could be helpful to you, as i use this info every summer and spring for lice too .Ivermectin works by killing biting insects once they've bitten, but dose not deter flies.

My horses has very sensitive skin so the only spray that works is sport horse fly spray. I do have to brush it on because he hates being sprayed. He came from the Netherlands and I have been trying to fix this issue for two years. Hopefully can make progress with this method! Thank you

I use simplifly by farnum plus daily fly spray

My poor clydie is TERRORISED by horseflies and last year i'd find him covered in blood and swellings from the suckers so my best preventative for him is a sweet itch rug, fly mask and spray as well as keeping in during the day during the worst few weeks these flies are particularly active. I tried just about every fly stuff known to man last year including all the home remedies, traps, etc and the only product that made any different is Leovet Power Phaser (not sure if available in USA) Its pricey but worth it.

Ultra Shield my horse loves to try n roll it off so I put him in stall for awhile with fan

I actually use a mix of citronella oil,Neem oil is (100 percent waterproof and kills flys and ticks) you can spray neem on white of horses and easier to clean after dirty) Dawn (kills lice and bacteria off the skin)isopropyl alcohol 90 percent, tea tree oil(anti microbial anti bacterial),lavender(to relax a nervous horse or colt) lemon grass and water this yr flys are bad and it works great. For the ears I use swat and under there belly or butt

We use the fly predators, but I have no idea if they help. Plus we have some natural fly spray. Both me and my horse dislike the smell.

I taught my horses this way but I kindof felt bad because first they learn that if they stop moving, then I stop spraying but then eventually I don't stop spraying when they stand still. How do they reconcile that?

I prefer Tri Tec or Ultrashield, both which allege 14 day effectiveness. You'll never get 14 days, but if you get several days, that's better than doing it every day. Mine are experts at taking off face masks, then they disappear in the pasture. I think I might try a solar fly zapper and see if it reduces fly population at all.

I just got a 13 yr old who won't let me approach her face with detangler or fly spray. I started yesterday with a very similar approach as yours. Is there an area of the face I should try to spray first. More so currently I need to be able to get a mass of burrs out of the furlock so need to be able to spray it.

I don’t think apple cider vinegar would be a good fly spray. Apple cider vinegar is use to attract fruit flies. I would say flies in general.

We must confess we are just wannabe horse people. We do not own horses, and have just ever leased a mini or we would consider subscribing. One day we might get a equestrian, but it is far fetched. We watched these video and like them as they taught us that we should remove our daughter from the practice for safety reasons.
