I think that should be a good example of how life really is. Everyone wants a happy ending, but it never is. At least in the grand scheme of death. Life is one problem after the other. Jay retired from “the life” as they call it, and yet here he is sad and mourning even after all the time he presumably spent with his wife. That was unavoidable. Happiness is not forever. What Jay needs is to be more open to people in his life, so that he’ll never truly be alone.

I think the episode lengths may have factored in, or it may they may have thought it'd take away from the main story I think. They had to sacrifice potential scenes and voice acting because of a limited budget. Like in the episode "exceptional human beings" I think they didn't have Batman, Katana and Metamorpho really speak with much dialogue because of the show's budget.
