Shabani's son Kiyomasa is now 10 years old.
In human years, he is between 15 and 18 years old, which is the age of puberty.
When his mother, Nene, notices that Kiyomasa is acting differently than before, she approaches him and shows her concern.
Although it is unlikely that Kiyomasa will ever mate with his older sister Ai or younger sister Annie, it may be time for him to have a flock of his own.

The boy gorilla is bored. This zoo needs to improve the gorilla enclosure and if they cannot afford it, find them a better home. The concrete is disgusting.

Your view is that this Gorilla troop lives in a prison. Well unfortunately they cannot be released into the wild, the troop could not survive in the natural surroundings of Africa!!!

So sad to see them in captivity. I understand many are in captivity in order to save them due to extinction reasons or that they were domesticated as pets (both, thanks to us), but this enclosure they're in is so much like a prison. Couldn't they at least be given some trees and better greenery? What they have now is so depressing and they look it.😔

You know what's really sad....These gorillas couldn't even be freed... Because they have been born and raised their whole lives in these walls and they know nothing else.....It's so sad.... These beautiful animals belong free

This is a horrible enclosure for gorillas, these animals have large territories to roam in the wild, that are very stimulating, these “zoos” with their concrete enclosures lack the stimulation these creatures need, which is why you see the weird behavior and pacing….

The Santa Barbara Zoo in beautiful sunny star studded California is home to two Majestic male gorillas.. Their extremely small concrete enclosure is a travesty😢

Its fascinating seeing how Kiyomasa loves playing with Annie and her reactions to his affections. Neene is a caring mum with her son even though he often wants to hit her. In a couple of years time Kiyomasa will want his own wife. Thank you for lovely footage of the Shabani family

Kiyomasa is not being affectionate, he is approaching Annie to mate, and rhey have been copulating, mating, regularly. There are several recent videos of their mating. He needs to be removed from the group. Sadly there apparently there is no female in any of the Japanese zoos that he is not closely related to, for him to be bred with. Please remember these are wild animals not people, they do not marry, there is no husband and wife. In the wild rhey will mate with several mates in their lives. So far there seems to be only mating with his niece, Annie, Ai has not shown interest in mating with him. I really hope the zoo vets have both females on good birth control, because with both being so closely related, offspring stand to have many and maybe severe deformities or disabilities.

@@bridgetrennie8267 the zoos closely monitor the gorillas an in this case Annie would be on birth control these facilities across thee world have a breeding program an have the family history an breeding records so they are well aware of who is related to whom. As these are critically endangered animals the zoological societies taking the breeding of these animals seriously

Kiyomasa is slowly turning into Casanova trying to woo the ladies! lol. He is getting to be rather handsome like his father. I hope that the zoo creates a bachelor pad for him so that he can get away from the family when he needs to. They did that for Frank the gorilla in the San Diego zoo as he got older. I believe that sometimes he is with the family and sometimes he is in his own bachelor pad home with his male buddy Monroe. I hope one day that Kiyomasa gets his own females. I wonder if they would even consider putting Momoka and Komomo with him. I know they are cousins, but in the wild that inbreeding does happen amongst gorillas like an uncle with a niece or an aunt with a nephew, so I think cousins wouldn't be bad. I've suggested before that they also consider putting Komomo and Momoka with Monta.

Frank had to stop being with family over a year ago (2 years?) as he was always challenging Winston as soon as he became stronger than Winston. Honestly he may have hurt Winston if the family didn't protect him. He knocked him down violently once, and was always threatening him. I forget if anything else happened. I guess the need to be the alpha is just impossible to ignore, as when Frank and Monroe were finally in their bachelor pad, and it was obvious Frank was the alpha in that case, he has become a lot calmer. Monroe also was phased out of seeing his family some time back.

Kiyo always seems to calm down when Nene approaches. Always looks at her like "Do you need something mom?". I am always wondering what they are thinking. Especially Nene. Who knows what goes on in her head! Her behavior is often mysterious.

I don’t understand all the politics of the Japan zoo. If there are no non related females for Kiyo to form a troop with then why are they not willing to send him out of the country to breed with other females available for him. It makes no sense to see these makes not being able to become a silverback with their own troop. Can anyone explain this a little further to me please

Japan has a bad reputation on how they treat their gorillas, they are not in the breeding program & overseas won't take them. Also they haven't made any plans for the blackbacks to be removed when they reach sexual maturity, which is now. The whole situation is pretty f...ed up.

На воле Нене столько лет не прожила бы ,там гориллы до 35 ,36 лет выживают, к тому же на них охотятся, их вообще в мире мало осталось,да и на воле им самим надо пищу добывать, только и делают, что ищут пропитание и прячутся от врагов

Males don’t go into heat. He will reach sexual maturity but once he does he will mate at any time. Looks to me like he had a headache

I'm not sure "heat" is the best term here for male primates. Most males can 'breed' on demand. The females go into estrus (heat). That being said, male primates certainly sense when females are in estrus... and react accordingly! :)

At another site, I saw a male go into heat/estrus. He shook, quivered, really showed desire when he looked at his son. Not when he looked at his wife. He finally raped his son.

It is a shame. But do you know why they have to spend their lives in caves and cages?? Because man has taking their natural habitat from them. The rainforest are being depleted daily to plant palm oil. Check out some videos on it. Its literally man’s greed once more. And they are so beautiful and amazing and loving 😢😢😢😢😊

I think that zoos need to be banished! These gorillas are bored and restless. They don’t even have trees to climb. At least in the wild, they can roam free and enjoy the land.
