When 21-year-old rookie pilot Taylor Hash took off last Friday in Michigan, veteran pilot Chris Yates realized something was off - literally. She had lost part of her front landing gear, but he helped her calmly and safely land the plane while she was alone in the air. NBC’s Gadi Schwartz reports for TODAY.

This is CRAZY important. I went to fly my drone with a friend that was at the moment in his first solos and went too far and lost GPS. I was about to lose it and he kicked into gear immediately. Talking to me, guiding me through the compas (we lost gps, but gyro and compas were fine) and looking for identifiable marks and roads on the ground (which was hard in the middle of buttf*ck nowhere) and we managed to safely land on our feet with battery to spare. The moment we started hearing it, looking for the lights (they are required by the law in here) and finally could catch a glimpse of it coming straight and steady towards us all our friends cheered. I hope my friend becomes and instructor one day, guy is crazy good at it.

@@donaldsalkovick396 There are a lot of Taylors, but how many of them are new pilots who just took off on one of their first solos while losing a nose gear and having a certified trainer in the air right nearby at the time it happens whose daughter is also named Taylor? I'm going to put it to you this way. I doubt that has ever happened before at any time in all of human history anywhere in the universe. So yeah, there are other people named Taylor, but her name isn't what stands out here and you completely missed the point. Besides, what harm does it cause to you that people noticed that? None of this was manufactured other than the aircraft they were flying being literally manufactured aircraft.

I've been a pilot for decades and I have to say THIS was incredible. I mean it, the pilot (Taylor) was so impressive. She is exactly who we all want in the air with us. The CFI was amazing ! He knew EXACTLY what to say, and what to not say. He became Taylor's guiding angel, while the controller was perfect ! This incident was more valuable to Taylor than any training she could buy. She just got confirmation of her ability in a way most pilots never get. Well young lady, you did it ! You will NEVER forget this day and the two friends that helped you through it. You now KNOW you can handle it. Congratulations Taylor, you have the right stuff. Safe skies and welcome !

So is there something in the pre trip that would catch this issue? How do you check this?
@randyporter3491
@randyporter3491 Жыл бұрын
There is a “pre-flight” inspection that every pilot performs before a flight. This covers a basic visual inspection of the aircraft, as well as gas quality, oil etc. In this case you would think there would have been something out of the ordinary to see on the landing gear, BUT, it may not have been easily “seen”. This could be due to the construction of the gear itself and if this plane had wheel pants (covers) over the wheels, but don’t think this particular plane had those. The axle bolt must have been loose and not secured with safety wire, as required by the FAA. Possibly a mistake during maintenance. But, I’m guessing and I hate second-guessing or speaking for someone else. But to your point, yes, this possibly could have been spotted beforehand.

It is a shame that so few people have flown an aircraft. If they had they would realise that even when the very worst of things occur (excluding a fire in the cabin or cockpit), you still have a choice. The outcome may not be pretty, but you will almost certainly walk or swim away. The most important thing is to take your time. You convert your height, speed or fuel into time and plan and prepare for the least worst outcome. Taylor, Chris and the ATC officer did this together and the outcome was the very best possible.

This is an issue with high time Diamond DA-20s. I've seen this happen to 3 from one flight school's airplanes (South-southwest of Atlanta), all high time aircraft. At that time, Diamond told me they "don't have any problems". Don't get me wrong, the DA-20 is an excellent trainer. I have close to 1,000 hours in these DA-20, 40s and 42s. Inspections of these DA-20 gear assembles where there are welds need to be very thorough. These welds are cracking, causing the gear to fall off. I have seen this twice after rotation and once on touch-down.
