Everything Don went through. Picking up bodies from the USS Indianapolis, to finding out on board by letter that his brother was killed, to being the only member of his crew alive today. You can see how much it hurts him recalling it all. No need to be sorry for crying, Sir. And thank you for telling your story, from a long time subscriber in the UK.

Its gotta a hell of a depressing/melancholy feeling to be the last survivor in old age from a large military unit. Knowing that you bear the last witness in living memory of events as they happened.

A war of aggression similar to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine is certainly bad, however, people which share your sentiment would often pursue a policy of peace at all cost where they pursue a policy of appeasement in order to prevent war. Those who wish to transgress upon other countries would only respect strength and not be appease with "appeasement", if you want to cause peace, arm your country to the teeth to show that any aggression from their part will be meet with force and they will know not to overstep their boundries.

Hey Josh and Heather, if you can, can you please interview a member of the Merrill’s Marauders. The Merrill’s Marauders were an elite, regimental-sized, ranger unit that fought in the jungles of Burma and suffered 99.8 percent casualties. Only two are still alive. Gabe Kinney, 101, from Alabama, and Russell Hamler, 97 or 98, from Pennsylvania. I personally don’t have contact with either, but Portraits of Honor, a photographer that corresponds with the Best Defense Foundation has interacted with Gabe Kinney before. I hope this comment helps

I met a 99 year old WW2 veteran as my patient in a geriatric psych ward. He fought on Iwo Jima as a marine. The old man was suffering from short term memory loss. But was in the best physical shape you could possibly be in at age 99. He lived co-dependantly with his wife until she passed away when he was 98. All he could remember is that his wife was in the hospital and he'd just relive her death if you told him the truth and he'd start all over again an hour later. He managed to escape and mostly outrun all of us younger psych workers one day. I'll never forget the story about him raising his M1 grand rifle to his first combat situation. He told me he also witnessed the raising of the flag on Mt seribachi.

This is extremely difficult to finish...my eyes are welling up and it's difficult for me to bury my emotions. But then I realize the difficulties that this man and so many others endured during war, having to bury not only their feelings, but also entire futures, dreams, family, loves, homes, friends, faith, lives, humanity....I've never been deployed although my father and grandfather have been and both had to endure as well. It ripped my entirety apart when he apologized for getting choked up, reminding me of my grandfather, who is in a better place, when he apologized to me for getting choked up. It was years ago when I was in high school. We were to write an essay on the life of a historical figure who had an impact on you. I knew that my teacher meant a prominent, globally known figure (ie. President, philosopher, king, queen, celebrity, scientist, emperor etc) so i declined that notion and chose someone infinitely more impactful on me. I chose my grandfather. I informed him of the assignment and asked if he would be ok with me asking about subjects I've never asked about and that he never talked about. I can still see in my mind how big his smile was and how his eyes lit up when he said "you're darn tootin' it's ok!" aka "yes" in G-pa speak. Days later it was Q&A time. Fantastic chat with my grandfather. If you really want to be taken back thru time, instead of books, videos, or museums....have a conversation with someone who was there (if possible). We arrived to the part of our conversation when he was in the Korean War. I kept it simple and generalized things so as to not make him feel uncomfortable. His attention slowly drifted away from me bit by bit as he recollected and continued to speak. It was as if he was talking to himself. He was there again and it crushed me. I dropped my head as he went on and it felt like the room we were in got smaller and heavier. I won't get into details, but the specificities of certain events in a sense brought him back to present day again. That was the first and only time I've seen him cry. His attention shifted back to me and he apologized as he quickly wiped the tears away and buried it all back inside. I hated myself for being naive and letting that happen. I didn't want him to relive it, but he assured me after that he was glad he could talk about it and thanked me for the opportunity to do so.....thanked me.....i have done nothing even close to resemble what he's done nor have I lived thru anything like he has. Like I told my grandfather then I say to the gentleman in this video. Sir, you have absolutely nothing to apologize for. Then or now. No amount of thanks or empathy will ever be enough to express my gratitude and pride for the people who gave and who are currently giving, everything they had or have in order for the world to be as it is. As redundant as it may be I am so very thankful, grateful, and proud for what this man and countless others have done. The same goes to you as well @Memoirs of WWII for following thru with these interviews, essentially making us set aside trivial matters to reflect upon events of our history we may have forgotten or never knew. Our past allows us to be who we are and deserves if not demands our respect. This man embodies our past and is RESPECT personified.
