Isabel Lieb AMAZING comment! I was told the very same thing by the doctors, at first. I never wanted children from the time I could first have memories. At 24, my best friend saw a health program on TV and it turned out that at that time, the government would PAY to tie or burn our one's tubes, even if one did not ever have children! I won't bore you with the details of how awful I was treated when folks found out and how the doctors were almost suspicious of me because at the time I didn't even have a boyfriend or even a lover, but I found a psychiatrist who really believed in my sincerity, and I had my tubes burned out a few weeks shy of my 25th birthday. I was told literally hundreds of times ("you'll regret this one day, just you wait until you hit 40!" or "you are a WOMAN and a woman's body is meant to have kids! What kind of [sic] weirdo are you, anyway?"). Sigh. I am now 6 weeks shy of my 48th birthday and my 58 year-old husband and I have been together for 21 years. Neither one of us has kids, neither one of us wants kids, we have the life and pets that we want, along with lots of freedom and many more choices available to us. We are happy and we have NO REGRETS. If someone wants kids and responsibly plan the offspring and provide them with a full and well-adjusted life, both emotionally and financially, then I will not judge you! I will wish you well and good fortune and happiness. So, when one hears that someone doesn't want kids, don't tell them "it's just a phase" or threaten them with "you will regret this somedaaaaaaaaaay!", just leave us alone and don't judge!

Plus it is understandable, they all gave their reasons (not that they should have to), if you don't agree with them then don't be sterilised yourself. Also, the NHS dispenses contraception (pills, implants, patches, etc. and condoms to those under 25), the government pays benefits out to everyone with children (regardless of income), and pays for schools etc.

I totally agree that it is their life. I was positive I did not want children in my twenties. Absolutely positive. After I turned thirty I completely changed my mind and now I have three beautiful children. I wouldn't have done sterilization. If you ask me, if I were these young people why not freeze some eggs or sperm in case you change your mind and yet you still have no worries about getting pregnant. If I could go back in time, I would have donated or sold my eggs when I was younger to struggling couples. When I got breast cancer at 37 yrs old I wish I have froze some of my eggs because I wasn't done having children but once you go through chemotherapy and take the meds to that you really wouldn't want to use the eggs inside of you not to mention that I am too old. I wish I had froze fresh eggs in my early twenties to use now at 45.

"There are so many children who need good homes" Many people really need to think deeply about this. As soon as you put a baby or a child up for adoption they need a home ASAP. People always trying to use the adoption argument as a great alternative from abortion, but they fail to realize the importance and the urgency of getting a baby or child a home and staying at that residence. Human children do not operate the same way as a dog or cat, you just cannot place them from home to home and expect them to be mentally or emotionally sound. So yeah just adopt. The attitude towards sterilisation is disgusting. I know for certain that I want to have children, so why the hell would I doubt someone else's certainty that they don't want kids? Why is their wants/opinion less valid or inherently less 'moral' than my own? I'm the child of someone who was in no way emotionally/mentally equipped to raise a child, and I have a great amount of respect for people who are self aware enough to know whether parenting is something they want or can do.

Hate to sound dark or negative but let's be real. 1 in 4 of us get cancer, 1 in 4 of us get help for a mental illness (probably 1 in 3 of us actually suffer and don't say anything) 20% of mothers have a miscarriage, for all you know your child could have a deformity or debilitating illness that it will live with for the rest of it's life. The planet is over-populated as it is and will only get worse. Terror attacks are more frequent than ever. Bullying in schools is worse than ever. Countries are not far off WW3. And you want to have a child all for your selfish needs? Horrible humans..

Yes, it's a serious decision, but having a child is much more serious. Not having kids is a personal choice, but when you're having kids, there is another human being involved. And yet, we don't treat people who want children like that. " But, it's so final! Once you're a parent, you'll always be a parent. What if you change your mind about it later? You're only 25, why not wait a few years? What if you regret having a child, hm?" I had a friend go through this, she asked many doctors, again and again, but in the end, she had to wait till her late 30s to get the procedure. Years later, she's still happy with her decision, but of course she whishes she'd been able to do it earlier. They treat you like not having kids is always the wrong decision. Oh, you DO want kids, you just don't know yet. You don't know what you're doing.

Picture this scene *woman and her husband are crying thier eyes out due to infertility* I walk in with a new baby in my arms and say ‘look at this baby it has nothing and no one, it’ll grow up in the system etc, you can have it I’ll give it to you now. *so they lean in to peek at this kid, look at each other and go, Urm nah* and then go home empty handed and alone. ITS SOOOO STUPID! In the animal kingdom if a baby is rejected or it’s mother dies the herd will take it in... but with humans? Nope. Nothing. My daughter is a beautiful, fun loving person, but she voiced her thoughts quite loudly, that she never wanted kids! And these were voiced at 12 years old! She always told guys she dated, that if they wanted kids someday, she was not the person they wanted to be with. She finally met the man of her dreams, who also did not want kids! She could not get fixed because of doctors telling her no, that she was to young! Which she wasn't. She was married and taking all kinds of protection to keep from getting pregnant. She went to her doctor and talked about it, because her husband was concerned about her health because of all the years of birth control pills. She came home crying and told her husband they said no. He told her it would be ok because they did not turn men down, and so he was fixed! Now they are happier than ever and living their life like they want. She asked me how I felt about her not having me grandkids? Well, I have always known how she felt about this and it was always fine with me! I have grandkids, great grandkids out the ass! In my opinion, they were doing the responsible thing!

This worries me a lot. I have a 19 year old & a 15 year old. They both don't want biological children. The 19 year old, yea I maybe could see her changing her mind at some point because she honestly loves kids but I still see it as her decision. The 15 year old though. She won't ever change hers. She fiercely loathes children & does her absolute best never to be in the same place they are. She isn't an awful person. She loves & takes wonderful care of her 2 dogs. She is smart & not prone to emotional outbursts. She just doesn't want kids ever. Why in the world should she be forced into either having them or being on hormones that she has a negative reaction when she takes them for 30+ years if she wants to have a relationship? It's madness. I love her a lot & she has so many special gifts but a maternal instinct is not one of those gifts. I don't need grandchildren because I Goddamn refuse to put any want I may have over how they choose to live their lives. Who does that? Telling them "you'll change your mind" is the same damn thing as telling them "I know what's in your head better than you do." As much as everyone thinks everyone feels the same things, that just is not the case. If both my daughters wanted to be sterilized, I'd have zero issues with that. If I as their mother have no problem with their decision, how can someone who sees them for 15 minutes maybe a couple times a year have such a huge issue with it? As an fyi for all those "I shouldn't have to pay for your lifestyle" types, we all pay for each other's choices. That's the way society works. I'd much rather pay the small cost for a tubal ligation for someone that knows they shouldn't have kids than the benefits, school, therapy & possible prison costs of someone raising kids they don't want & shouldn't have had. The math works out much better that way.

One which I'd NEVER wish that on but it was his choice and he didn't include me in it (he was 20 without kids), and two others who already had at least two kids and didn't want any more anyways I just gave them the last push they needed. So apparently I'm a one women wrecking machine. Lol I'd LOVE to be sterilized but it costs FAR more, and I don't tolerate ANY injury as it'd cause me life long pain AND permanent nerve damage thanks to a rare condition.

So long as I could take one birth control pill I was fine, but they discontinued it and the others I tried make me feel God awful. Thus for about 6yrs I was fine and then I spent a couple yrs using spermacide, as I have a interesting effect on latex, I dissolve it. Well, it is biologically speaking the only reason we are ever born. But that´s that, a lot of people don´t want children and taht is perfectly fine. But adopting and having kids of your own are two completely different things that should not be compared with each other, because it doesn´t work.

@1st1anarkissed

biologically the only reason? Oh, where'd you go to consult biology on it's motivations? Ohhhh, evolution, plain common logic. If you don't breed, your genetics get dropped from the gene pool, right? Yeah, except my brother and sister both bred and their genetics are my genetics so my genes ARE still in the pool. What's not in the pool is the flawed offspring of a person who categorically does not want to deal with babies. That's not a bad thing. As to "purpose of being born" it's pretty limiting to suggest we're on the level with adult moths, here to spawn and die. Humans who didn't have children are often the ones who advance society because they're not tied down and exhausted. Therefor, sterile humans can very much advance the human race and it's place on the earth. Biology must surely appreciate the sterile humans in it's evolutionary designs, don't you think? Or do you think? Because this might be too complicated for you to follow. Sum it up: not breeding means more working means great value means important too.

I just wanted to comment my experience with a woman who didn't want children. My auntie was quite the eccentric. Bright colored hats, flaming red hair. She was an artist. She told me my whole life she didn't want kids of her own. She didn't want kids of her own but she loved kids. She was the best babysitter. She was so carefree. Dancing, painting. So easy to talk to. She didn't want to be a mother herself but she impacted many kids and people's lives. Including mine. Just because you don't want kids, doesn't mean you don't like them. I later learned, after her death, she was mentally ill. I think she was afraid her children would suffer the same.

I am now 61 and have no regrets that I didn't have a child. So if you are young, don't let anyone tell you that you don't know your own mind. i dont understand why people are treating these people like children or very young adults in their teens still. these people are in their late twenties, early thirties. if you think that someone is mature enough to make the decision to have a child at those ages but not a sterilization, then youre a hypocrite.

Should someone be allowed to do something to their own bodies? YES. Keyword is: own. It's THEIR body. Who cares? It is their body and if they regret it then it is their regret, not yours.

People get pissed when people get pregnant and have abortions because they don't want kids, but when they want to do something to prevent the pregnancies to begin with because they know they don't want children, that's an issue? I've heard the saying, "some people shouldn't be allowed to have children." Well why can't people be allowed to choose to not ever have children? People are too worried about what other people are doing. Let them make their choices...so what if they end up wanting kids and having regrets...let them adopt...there's a ton of children that need a family.

Rachel Cox- I agree, ppl hate when other ppl do something to their bodies such as plastic surgery, a trans person transitioning, abortions, or sterilization. I never really understand how is that any of their business, it's not even their bodies. Just because ppl can reproduce doesn't mean you should. It's obvious that these don't want to bring mentally ill children into the world to suffer and spare them from the pain that it would likely be passed down. I don't understand why in the hell would you want mentally ill ppl to reproduce specially after suicides and massive shootings going on.

fertility itself is NOT an organ you cannot compare it to the ABILITY to hold a child safely in the body. When women cant have a pregnancy their organs are NOT failing . Please be more sensitive to this issue

Catalina Suarez v. I do think if both your kidneys work that is a privilege. You shouldn’t take good health for granted. But fertility can be a curse for those who do not want to get pregnant. Being on birth control for the entirety of your reproductive years is not fun

When I was 27 I had to fight with my dr in order to have my tubes tied. I already had a two year old, I had been diagnosed with a progressive disease that has now caused me to be disabled. I had to fight with the doctor to have the procedure done, because I was too young or I might change my mind. Eventually I was authorized, had my tubes tied. Eventually I had to have a full hysterectomy due in part of the medical condition. He doctor who did the hysterectomy said my tubes should had never been tied, I should have been given a hysterectomy in the beginning. It’s so unbelievable that we have to fight for the right to choose what is best.

There are plenty of people who have this idea that it is your duty to "GIVE" your parents grandchildren, and people in older generations have been taught that having grandchildren is part of a fulfilling life.

I knew since I was 11 that I never wanted children. I watched my sister grow up and saw all the work it takes to raise a child properly which only further confirmed I never wanted kids. I think it's messed up that out here in U.S. you have either be a certain age, have kids already, or have a medical condition to become sterile. What about a woman's choice? The ability to become sterile should always be an option.
@etarver13

That's because it's a societal norm that people feel to a certain degree that you must have to have a baby. This might due to religious beliefs since certain religions put too much emphasis on people having kids. I'm in the same boat as you are. Ever since I was young (like 5-7 years old) I never wanted or even liked kids. I always thought that their way too much of a headache to deal with, and how can parents deal with them and want more kids.
