Hi! Just want to pop in and share some information regarding pollinators and bees! Honeybees are actually a pretty aggressive pollinator and if you aren't interested in beekeeping for honey, I'd suggest doing a little research about the pollinators in your area. Kaci, since you're keeping bees for honey this is more for anyone perusing the comment section. I also feel like because of your location, building out habitat for native pollinators and birds may be absolutely imperative to the health of your immediate ecosystem. I'm not trying to criticize you for doing your part and I actually want to congratulate you for doing what you can! However, since you are someone who owns land that you are able to tend to; I suggest building out more of a habitat of native plants to your area to sustain all pollinator species as well as native birds. Arkansas has some incredible native plants like milkweed (butterflies! yay!) and wild petunias as well as carolina rose and those plants will introduce things that will rebalance ecosystems. Please research ways to rebalance the ecosystem in a productive long term way because planting for honeybees is only the beginning. :)

Yes, thank you! I love that Kaci is so passionate about caring for her bees, and I’m happy that she’s sharing this information with us. But our native bees and other pollinators also need our support! There are many great native plants we can use in our gardens to support the birds and pollinators. Goldenrod, which she mentioned, is a good one. Of course, native plants vary by region so I encourage those who are interested to look into which species grow naturally in their area.

Thank you for the info. Most of the flowers we plant support butterflies and hummingbirds as well! We enjoy seeing all the beautiful pollinators. However the bees seem to be taking a very hard hit.

I think the general thought is that we can all do our part to support pollinators in our own areas. Kaci- I appreciate that you keep bees and remind us about our personal landscapes to help support a strong ecosystem.

We have a small acreage in SD and are also surround by fields. Our garden did so poorly last year and we are pretty sure it had to be from the crop duster plane that sprayed the neighbors field. It's so bad for the bees, our health and the few animals we have. I don't know what the answer is but I think we, as a nation need to take a few steps back and think about what has happened to our health as a nation.🐝

Our garden has been a mess the last few years unfortunately. We hoped bringing bees in would help but I think we had a drought and heat this past year that caused a lot of issues. Hoping for a better harvest this year

For plant fibers and superwash I like to use a "russian join". You cross the yarns and "weave in" the tail back into the yarn itself.

Yes! I tried that and felt in the end it made the yarn too thick

I loved your bee segment. Love bees and grow things they love; I have lots of catmint. Your combo spin is beautiful, and I am excited to see it transformed into a sweater, I like wearing my handknit socks with my "Duck feet" shoes. My perfect spring outfit is a comfy dress with anklets and a sweater. Spring isn't quite as advanced as where you are but seeing yours tells me it is right around the corner. Not bored about the bees AT ALL! Super interesting to learn more about how we can support them (and other wildlife) by not using any pesticides and by planting a large variety of flowering plants. We participate in "No-Mow May," where we don't cut our lawn until early June to get the bees a head start. Last year I figured out that I need to weed-whack the higher-growing grasses to keep the yard looking decent while still allowing the low-flowering plants to feed the bees.

No no, we ARE interested-or should be, everyone needs to be aware how important bees are to our very survival!! 🐝 You might enjoy reading the series of Sherlock Holmes-spinoff novels by Laurie R King, starting with the Beekeeper’s Apprentice. They’re really well-written, interesting, historical novels (including various exotic settings) but the reason I mention them is that beekeeping by the Sherlock character features prominently in the first few books. And the main character/heroine is a fabulous, sassy, fearless, brilliant young woman, Mary Russell. 🎉

Another Bee Safe tip: When purchasing plants/starts at the nursery or big box stores avoid plants grown with Neonicotinoids (it should say so on the back of the plant tag). "Pollinator Safe or Bee-Safe" is the rational behind this. Some states have banned plants treated with insecticides outright though take a peek because the pretty flowers we may be purchasing could be causing harm. 🐝🐞🌻

When I used to live in the south of France, when pesticides were spread over the wine/grape production lands the nearby schools would be closed. It radicalised me haha especially as I come from a region with very strong small scale organic production. The wine production was just so destructive to the whole biodiversity of the region. it was truly gutting. Now with the wild fires getting stronger, we are seeing the limits of mono-cultures.

Love your step by step cardigan. I have been looking for a basic easy to wear cardigan pattern and I think this one is perfect. I hope the pattern comes out soon. Also I listen using headphones and can’t hear the jets. Don’t stress

Thank you for the spot about the bees and beekeeping. I would love it if you shared a couple of minutes about your farm life every episode. I find that equally as interesting as your magnificent fine crafting. thank you for your time and efforts. It can't be easy for a young wife and mother with a career outside the home as well.

I've only been knitting a little over a year and just completed my first adult sweater last month. I want to make a cardigan and I think this will be the pattern for my first attempt because it will have the tutorial video with it. Now to pick the yarn while waiting for the pattern to release...😅. Can't wait to see your finished dress!
