Part 1 of the worst areas of Youngstown, Ohio. This place has certainly seen better days! Ever since the factories, production plants, and steel mills shut down in the 70's and 80's Youngstown was hit very hard with the industrial decline. This Rust Belt City has seen a major population decline over the years, however up until very recently only is a slight uptick and sits currently around 67,000 people. There are so many abandoned homes and buildings, its a sight to see. Youngstown can also be a very dangerous place as the crime rate is 80% above the national average. Let's check out some of those dangerous areas along with some abandoned buildings and homes.

I grew up on the Sharon Line, but left at 18 when I moved away for college. My father worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube, and later at General Motors (GM). It wasn't a bad place to live in the 60's and 70's despite the high crime rate. It's heartbreaking to see how the city has deteriorated since the mills shut down, and now GM is closed too. Thank you for documenting this.

I grew up in Warren, just north of Youngstown. My grandfathers worked in the mills - Van Huffel and Republic Steel, and my dad was at GM. Both my kids were born in Ytown. I stayed until my 30s, but there was nowhere left to work. Moved to SC, then FL. Warren looks almost as bad as Youngstown. Sad how far the area has fallen. Lot of good hard working people there. And some great pizza!

I moved back 50 years later and could not believe what had become of the people and city. I bought a farm in southern Ohio and go back about once a year to see family.

Living in East Liverpool, OH I thought I saw some of the worst that Ohio had to offer, but as I've grown up it seems like most of Ohio has gone through the ringer. I used to go to Youngstown State University and it always pained me to drive through these neighborhoods. I hope with time Youngstown can recover because this place has a lot of heart behind it, it just needs a little love to get going again.

I have a question for the locals of Youngstown, particularly the east side. I was driving through the Sharon Line neighborhood once, and noticed that several streets are completely abandoned and reclaimed by nature, some of which have even been barricaded by the city. I heard somewhere that Youngstown was supposed to peak at almost a quarter-million residents at one time and those areas were built for future housing, therefore when the steel mills collapsed some of them were never even built. Is that true?

Unless you’re from Mars, what happened to Youngstown and many other rust belt cities and towns (Check Gary, IN) isn’t a mystery or a conspiracy or a politics. This video shows the aftermath of economic catastrophes from decades ago. It’s simply the closure of the primary employers. First the mills, which employed area folks for generations and then GM-Lordstown. No jobs means people leave. When people leave, businesses close. If folks aren’t working at those good paying mill or GM jobs, they can’t afford to keep up their homes. With fewer people and fewer businesses to contribute property or sales taxes to the city, services like maintenance and repair of streets suffers, schools close, neighborhoods are emptied. The same cycle

Looks like the third world. I'm originally from Campbell. Would rather be homeless in Los Angeles- which I was for almost three years - then live in a mansion in the Y-town area.

I recommend a movie "6 ways to Sunday". It's based on classical novel, but adopted very well for to take place in Youngstown.
