I thought I was a visual organizer, but since I rid myself of excess stuff, and freed up a lot of storage space, I discovered I actually like things hidden for the most part. There are a few things that need to be out so I don’t forget about them, but this is an exception rather than the norm.

I am a visual organizer, but I have to put my arts and crafts stuff in boxes - and sometimes these boxes in cupboards. So what I do is simple: I photograph the open boxes and when they are in the cupboard I photograph that as well. And then I transfer this photo information onto my computer and meticulously name every photo with box number and which cupboard it is in. That is a giant task, but I only have to do it once and update it occasionally. And saves so much time when I don't have to search for things - and clutter everything up in the process.

Those pink bins are adorable. If my dollar tree has some of these, I might buy like 10. I love using bins like that on a bookshelf to hold stuff that I use together and store together. That way I can store away my nail polish remover with the cotton balls, my base and top coats, and all my nail art tools. I display the colored polishes on an acrylic display above the basket. Then I can just grab one basket, choose the colors, and move to the table to work on my nails. I do this with hair dying equipment like gloves and foils and brushes. I do it with journaling supplies. I do it with my skin care. And it's so nice to be able to dump it all back in the basket and put it on a shelf so this stuff doesn't end up all over my house scattered across the last surface I used it on. I have a bunch of baskets I use for this, but they are mismatched and it's like doing a puzzle to arrange them neatly on the shelf. I'd love to be able to make them uniform.

Sarah ... have you tried a tickler file system?? Most people have 12 file folders for each month and 31 folders for each day of the month. . . however i made mine with 12 monthly hanging folders plus 7 hanging folders for each day of the week. . .i simply don't need the 31 days added. I also added one for 'Loose paper' i find laying around the house. A 'Quick Reference' folder and a 'To File' folder to temporarly hold papers til i can do some filing. A lot of times items in the 'To File' folder is no longer relevant by my filing day and can be discarded. When a paper comes in your house file it in the month or month before it requires action. If it doesn't require action but needs to be kept either pop it in the To File folder or quickly add it to your long term reference filing system. If there's something that needs to be done but has no paper simply write a note to drop into the appropriate month or day of the week. On the 1st of the month or a few days before, look thru this months and the upcoming month to see if there's anything you can put in the 7 daily folders. . . It's vital to regularly check your folders (daily and monthly) first of each month and first of each week. . . It all sounds waaay more complicated than it is! It's actually very easy to set up and maintain. Since i will be looking at my tickler file all the time, i splurged a bit and bought my hanging folders in a gorgeous pink kept in a frosted file bin. This has been a MASSIVE life changer for me. Years ago i made a tickler file in a 5x8 binder that worked ok (and very portable) but it became a hassle to find the binder, open to the correct page wiggle a paper in there and then the same routine when retreiving paper out of it. . .with a hanging system it only takes micro seconds to pull up slightly the folder by the tab, to drop in or retrieve a paper. Hope this helps you and others as much as it's helped me. 👍😉

THEN I carefully arranged bouquets of flowers and some figurines on the different levels of boxes! There’s more. But we have 10 children, a huge house and run a business (5 at one time in the past). Thank you for sharing . Gosh 👀 that first tip about finding a home near the hot spot is genius. I laughed so much about your end story with the oven .lol . I must admit I hate taking my rubbish out my bin and taking it outside ..I leave it to the last minute after everything has been pushed down and compacted in my bin by so much that trying to pull the bag out seems to create a vacuum and it’s harder to do or worse the bag splits lol , I think it’s because I always saw my dad take out the rubbish ..I associate it beings a mans job but I haven’t lived with a man for 20 years lol . My son is now 24 and I occasionally say to him my feelings about my bin theory and he’s so wonderful he says I will do it ..and he honestly means it ..problem is he officially has short term memory problems so he forgets he’s offered, ( it’s all fun and games in this house , but I adore him 😉) and I just end up doing it 😏. Oh I love the file folder from dollar tree wire separator. Hubby is a stacker, but will use an upright file sorter if it’s prepared for him. I am totally going to make these for him to hang on the wall. The ones I could find were astronomical in price. Do you have a video on the lazy clutter? Our home is 75% lazy clutter. I’ve tried to do everything to get people to take care of their stuff. And I just can’t figure it out. I feel like the next step is family therapy

Lazy clutter is just daily 5 minute tidy up times throughout the day to retrain your brain to start tidying as you go. Start with 5 or 6 alarms throughout the day. After a few weeks, you won't need them anymore!

Hugs to you! My thoughts, first if they don’t put things away will you do it for them? Then stop for a while so they have a reason to do it. Second, as a adult I realised parents growl at their kid, especially teens, that their room is a mess do fix it but do they ever Ask why? Like maybe clothes is all over surfaces because their actual home is not organized in a way that makes it easy to find and put away. Or maybe they Need to try things on to Know so maybe a Big bin where they can temporary put tried on clothes. Etc etc:) At the end of the day, if ppl really dont want to and face no real consequence, they won’t.

This is a real challenge. I have MS, and have limited energy. I had to tell my kids, “When I go to clean, I don’t have enough energy to pick up your stuff first. I will give you a warning, then I’ll be tossing whatever I have to pick up.” After a few times of them running to the wheelie bin to retrieve things, they took it seriously. “I’m doing the hallway in 10 minutes” would send them scurrying to grab their stuff.

My opinion of my spaces is that: Everything should have a home, and almost everything should be in its home almost all the time :) I put my electronic stuff & cords together (currently it's all in a shoe box sized box on my shelf that I don't know where it's home is going to be in my new apartment...I only have a few organizing things left to do in my new place, and that's 1 of them. Extension cords & power cords go in my "tools junk drawer" with my hammer, screwdriver, wrench, a small Tupperware of nails & screws, a flashlight with its large D batteries, large packing tape, & other misc stuff that feels more tools like. My other junk drawer (1 only have 2 and they both keep well organized this way) has more "office-y junk drawer" stuff in it. Like papers that you just hung up in folders on your wall, a few pens, scotch tape, small batteries like AA & AAA, kept organized by little drawer organization bins to collect the same items and the little stack of "to fo papers" to keep them corralled in the corner, etc. I have found d having g 2 separate junk drawers for more specific types of items really cuts down on how cluttered and messy just 1 drawer of miscellaneous rsp can get. Lol

Hey Cass I am a total mega slob and so is my partner. Since discovering your you tube videos and getting your audio books I have been slowly trying to get my home organised so far only done my pantry, bathroom and my wardrobe. I have a long way to go but you totally have inspired me to get my household organised. By the way I am a butterfly and I also work 2 jobs so it’s extremely slow process I’m making. After watching this video I’m totally going to make a landing zone I just have to get to ikea to get some cube storage units because we seem to just drop stuff on the floor at the door area. I'm definitely a visual "organiser" (appreciate the positive spin on that name, lol!). I have ADHD and my challenges with object constancy (out of sight out of mind) are SERIOUSLY bad. I love the floating shelves idea for your daughter - if I could I'd have them everywhere, but unfortunately as renters we wouldn't be allowed to put them up. Rentals particularly can be REALLY bad for storage of any type for people with brains like ours! Thanks for the tips.

Cass, in the past I was that slob you were talking about! You made me laugh because it hit home! I do think though, that it's not laziness. I was and am a busy, energetic person, lots on the mind and ready to help anyone! We get so busy at life we can't do it all. I am a perfectionist, plus I focus on one thing with passion, other things get in the way, which then they're not done. I was the only one that took the garbadge out! My family would let it pile up like some DR. Seuss pile!(tall tower, teetering) I was rocking my baby to sleep, %@!# the garbadge! Then in the late hours after the baby went to sleep, I would crawl in bed! Waking often during the night for baby needs. The day would start over, never getting to the garbadge! Don't know why no one else in the family didn't take it out. Anyway, good realistic video!

Your videos are so helpful for me and I watch a few different channels for organizing. I love how you explain different types of clutter and ways of organization it all. I'm trying to declutter and downsize various stuff in almost every room. To say I've walked in a room and went into a immediate anxiety and had to walk away to map out a plan is almost embarrassing how often I feel this. I watched the 4 ways to closet while talking about what type of "bug" we are opened my eyes. I'm going to rewatch as i find i relate to a few different bugs for different things. Big fan of the bin toss for certain items, yet needing preferably clear bins with tidy organized stuff also works for me. *omfg... the dirty oven dish, or the smelling of clothes! I feel so seen! * Here's one for ya, i was desperate for all the dishes clean b4 having a dishwasher, I deep cleaned my bathtub, filled it with dish soap and everything w a drying rack and towl on the side to get it put away ASAP. Then cleaned the tub all over after all that chaos. I was 22 and desperate. 20 years later still learning but way better than i was even 10 years ago.
