In German, the equivalent of "they can't stand each other" literally translates as "they can't smell each other", implying they smell bad to each other.

I wish they’d done online-only fast friends as part of the study. If one clicks with someone online, and you brought that pair together to smell each other, how likely would they be to rate the smell as better than average? That’s a truly blind study. Because it could be that people who get along have similar smells, and not that people with similar smells get along. Which would be cool. Because you could predict that people who meet online and get along would be more likely to have similar smells. Chicken or the egg.

I don’t think the video implied the fact that the people who like each other also just happen to smell similarly or that our characters result in a specific smell? Rather, that having similar smells (ie smelling each other) helps us get along. People whose relationship is predominantly online probably have random smells because smell didn’t influence their online relationship.

Funny thing, I recently picked up "scented" cat litter by mistake. My roommate commented that he appreciated not smelling the cat pee all the time from the box. At the same time, I was thinking about how nasty and overwhelming the scented perfume smell was. I had apparently become nose blind to the cat pee smell. Thankfully, now I am becoming nose blind to the perfume smell (and the cats don't seem to mind either way).

Scented cat litter has always given me a headache, and I associate it with litter that isn't scooped nearly enough because that's what I grew up with. I dislike the perfume smell, and so have all of my cats over the years. The problem is that it gets everywhere, because litter tends to get everywhere. I much prefer litters that have odor control, rather than a scent that covers it up. The biodegradable scoopable litters do a pretty good job of this, and I can compost the urine clumps afterward.

To be fair, their definition of smelling "nice" is probably different. Dogs strive for pack harmony: they show love in an effort to create stronger bonds between the people and animals they think of as family, regardless of personal preferences. However, dogs definitely DON'T love all humans equally and it IS based on smell. If you chose your dog at a breeder or shelter, knowingly or not, you picked one that responded well to your smell. Even a dog you found: smells travel, more than likely that dog knew you were coming long before you were aware of them. Even in a desperate situation, dogs will hide from people whose smell they don't like.

I have a more-sensitive-than-average nose, so everyone has a smell to me--not as strong as what a dog smells, but enough that I can sniff a jacket and figure out who it belongs to. Everyone I explain this to thinks this means everyone stinks to me, so here's the little speech I give: No. The fact that I can smell you doesn't mean you stink. Having a smell is not the same as smelling bad. For most people, it's just information, like your eye color or the timbre of your voice. Yes, some people DO smell bad to me, but it's usually for a specific reason, like poor personal hygiene or an alcoholic bender. Most people don't smell especially good or bad, just like most people don't look especially good or bad. We just look, and smell, like us. I assume that's how dogs view it too. Most of us don't smell "bad" unless we smell specifically like a vet's office or something.

Possibly. I had a roommate (platonic) years ago who I detested the smell of. He was of a different cultural and genetic background, but we ate mostly the same food while we lived together. After I moved out I went back to eating my own preference in foods, but soon noticed that I started to smell like him. That smell lingered on me for years - until I had an incident with a jacuzzi and pool that had the chemicals set way too high. I ended up with chemical burns from the chlorine. But the smell of my former roommate was finally gone. So I'm thinking in this case it was microbiome.

One of the first things I noticed there was how strong and different the body odor was from what I was used to, but when I got back, I noticed I had it too. Oddly enough, it was only under my right armpit. My theory is, I'm a rather tall guy and I usually lift my right arm up when hugging someone, and was hugging a lot of coworkers there (it's super normal there). I think my right armpit simply got exposed to a lot of bare, sweaty shoulders and that transferred the microbiome to my that armpit. It stuck that way for a good 3-4 years after I got back and wasn't till I bought some prescription strength antimicrobrial soap that it finally went away. Very random, weird, interesting stuff.

@BM1982.V2
@BM1982.V2 5 ай бұрын
I agree that many things affect your scent. Especially diet but in your case it may be more of a case of the old socks trapped your odors and concentrated them to the point of smelling really bad, while the cotton socks allowed breathability so those same odors were allowed to dissipate to non detectable levels. Your odor may not have changed at all, just got stronger or weaker depending on breathability.
@BM1982.V2
@BM1982.V2 5 ай бұрын
To add an anecdote, I wear sandles all summer and my feet don't smell much at all. Whenever I have to wear socks and shoes my feet smell a little bit. Not repulsive or anything but definitely can notice a difference. It doesn't mean my smell changed but socks and shoes trap odors far more than sandles do. Plus your feet sweat more when covered and the bacteria on your feet eat sweat to produce the odor. If your feet are breathing they are probably sweating less thus creating less odor.

I would've expected the complete opposite! I had a theory many years ago, inspired by some article I'd read, that people would want to be be in a relationship with those who smelled different. By partnering with someone who carried microbes different to our own, it would diversify our individual microbiomes, and thereby improving immunity and the survival chances of offspring. Perhaps the distinction here is friend vs partner, and could explain why some people are friends instead of partners, and vice versa.

But not too different either. At least for romantic relationships. I wonder if that goes back to when there were different species of human, (Homosapien, Neanderthal, Denisovans, etc). Scientists now say that these different kinds of human could interbreed. But it looks like it might have been more difficult to mix genes from different species than from the same. I would imaging each species had a fairly unique microbiome. So maybe it was beneficial to prefer the scent of someone not too far off from our own.

@@anyascelticcreationsThey couldn't just interbreed, they definitely did. Thus Europeans tend to have about 4% Neanderthals' DNA and Asians some Denisovans' DNA. There are even theories that what happened with Neanderthals is to some extent similar to what's currently happening to polar bears in North America. (They interbreed with grizzlies, but the offspring bears more similarities with the grizzly side, and also there are more grizzlies, so the half-polar-bear offspring is most likely to mate with a grizzly, resulting in quarter-polar-bear-offspring and so on. So, it's a factor to polar bears going extinct while a small percentage of their DNA gets preserved in grizzlies.)

Friendships like relationships take time and effort. It started getting to a point where having friends felt like an obligation- and that should never be the case. I have friends I reach out to occasionally- check on them and so forth- but I’m typically happier having the majority of my day to myself (alone). Everyone is different. It might not work for you, but it has strengthened my relationship with myself- something I had avoided for 25+ years. If I want some human interaction- I go to the store, or coffee shop. I somehow smell very similar to how my father did. He died in 2009 but I kept one of his worn t-shirts stuffed in a closet and some years ago it still smelled like him. And somehow my own smell is similar to his. It's very comforting, sometimes feeling like my dad is around though he hasn't been for nearly 15 years 😢 I miss him a lot...

It waqs something about it being how our ancestors would be drawn to a specimen that would bring about a successful pregnancy and produce healthy children. It makes me wonder if that's why kids love the smell of their parents so much, as kids seem to have an extra strong "sense" for it. Is that a thing?? Now I'm curious how many people like vs dislike how their families smell. I hate the way my parents and siblings smell, I figured it was an evolutionary thing to deter inbreeding. Like, if your genes are too similar you smell bad to each other was a way of communicating "stay away from me".

@@donotgotthis The new mom thing is true. After my son was born I kept being told to smell him to help with breastfeeding. Most women will tell you there is a specific "new baby smell" we are attracted to. I could smell it, my mom, ect, but not the men in my family. (Same when my nephews were born). As for parent smell, just my personal expierence. My 3 year old prefers our pillows, and my stepdaughter loved our dirty sheets when she was little... so maybe it varies person to person?

@racheljensen1823 that's super interesting. I'd be curious to see if it's a stronger feeling as children that people grow out of. I feel like that'd make sense, since as kids we stay around parents for safety so we naturally *want* to be around them. Super cool to think about. I'm familiar with the new baby smell but it must just be a person to person thing because I never really liked that either, haha.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe that's just me.
