On the LN one, snug the blade up and then push one side (whatever side the shoulder you're planning against is on) on a flat surface. That will make it parallel to and exactly even with the mouth on one side.

That is deff a handy trick!!! I pinned this cus with that method the lateral adjustment isn't needed!

I find I prefer the iron to project ever so slightly (maybe 1/4mm) beyond the cheek of the plane. Especially with shoulder planes that don't have a nicker (as on the old Stanley and LN 10-1/4). You need clearance on the cheek if you want the back wall of the rabbet perpendicular to the floor of the rabbet. If you don't have the slight projection the plane wants to "creep" away from the back wall of the rabbet leaving it slightly wider at the top. That's why rabbet irons are generally supplied slightly wider than the plane body. Your mileage may vary.
@BatCaveCreations
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
ooo this is a great point too! do you do the same thing for shoulders? or do you have that projection for rebates only? Imma do a short today on showing this trick so I wanna include your opinion also, if that is ok?
@wintermutt9090

@@BatCaveCreations I use this technique for rebates (or rabbets), not for shoulders. We cut an increasing gain (3/4" wide progressing from nothing to maybe 1/4" deep) at the stem and transom ends of the lapstrake planking for the small wooden boats we build on Saturday mornings. In this case I typically use a little Stanley No. 92, and the planking for our last build was milled from a superb beach log I salvaged of yellow cedar cypress. I've seen some guys lay a sheet of paper on a flat surface under the side of the plane body and let the iron project just that thickness.

The standard lever handle is great and love the classic look of the LN, but the adjustable knobs on the veritas is a clear winner imo. Throw in the PMV 11 iron, lateral adjustment....then apply the price difference....winner winner chicken dinner!

Fully agree with you there! I wonder how many LN collectors will admit that they have the LN but actually USE the Veritas hahha

I do use the Veritas large shoulder quite often, I would say once to twice a week. I did pick it out over the Lee-nielsen because of the movable nobs, and the hole in the middle. As far as price I think in terms of how much time will the tool save me. The other extra features don't hurt. Have a good one🙂

Veritas is the winner here in my book. Extra handles, set screws and a 100 bucks cheaper. I have a smaller shoulder plane but rarely use it on shoulders, using a chisel just works better for me. What its is most useful for me, I cant seem to get a accurate rebate from the 78 so use shoulder to dial in rebates.
@BatCaveCreations

Great point on using the shoulder plane for rebates! I had a 78 and ended up selling it cus it just made me angry lol I couldn't get it to work as well as I wanted it to either. I use my router plane for rebates but..... now I really wanna try a small shoulder plane for cleaning them hahaha

Thanks for this one! One of the planes I am still in the market for is a shoulder plane so it was great to see these two side by side. I didn't realise the Veritas was so feature rich! The adjustability of those two knobs is a superb feature, and the fact that it's _so much_ cheaper makes it a complete no-brainer for me. Being able to get it with a PMV11 iron would just be icing on the cake. I totally get what you're saying about wishing L-N would take some notes from Veritas's innovations and add some features........ but then imagine what they'd charge for it! 😲😲😲😲Even among their die-hard fans I don't think you'd find many who would stretch to a 500 buck shoulder plane 😁😁😁😁 ....okay okay, $450 plus shipping, but still..... 😼
@BatCaveCreations
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
haha very valid point! their prices would skyrocket! You are a savvy woodworker, I can tell. lol Why do you like PMV-11 over O1 for joinery planes?
@tungsten_carbide
@tungsten_carbide Жыл бұрын
@@BatCaveCreations Re. the PMV-11, it would just be my chance to try it out. I'll never buy their chisels and none of their bench planes so this would be my one shot to see what it's like in person. I have heard very good things about what it's like to use from someone whose insights I really trust - not too hard to sharpen (like A2) but holds an edge really really well.

I do highly recommend it, I have not tried the new Lake Erie irons tho. I am hearing they are even better than pmv11. So if you don't Wana buy from veritas, check out Lake Erie tools and try their irons :)

If we have a router plane, can we use that for shoulders?
@ChadHyett
@ChadHyett Жыл бұрын
I use my router plane to make the tenons parallel to the face and sneak up on the fit, and it works wonderfully. Not sure you could true up a shoulder with one though since the tenon would have very little reference area on top. That's where a shoulder plane shines I think. A rabbet plane would work though.
@BatCaveCreations
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
Chad is correct I wouldn't use the router plane for shoulders. I use chisels for shoulders then the router plane for the face

Great comparison! I want to see comparison between the Small Shoulder planes. I am planning to buy one soon - but don't know which one to choose.
@BatCaveCreations
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don't have the small ones to compare but they are identical to these just smaller sizes, minus 1 difference. The Veritas still has the set pins but it does not have the handles. the LN small shoulder plane is $185 out of stock, if they follow the trend that price will increase next time they have them available. Veritas is $212 for PMV-11 and O1 is $199, these are out of stock also. I haven't noticed if Veritas raises their prices when things come back in stock, because they allow pre-orders. For the small ones, if we take the set pins out of the mix, look at the pinned comment above, that trick eliminates the need for lateral adjustment. It is going to be how you want to hold the plane. The Veritas has the hole on the side and the LN, well.... with it being that small I'm not sure we would be able to use that cap as a handle but it would be more of a hand rest lol I hope that helps!

@@XxIcedecknightxX Yeah i've heard this tip before and I think it's a great one, and apart from anything it's most likely to be a Bridge City plane you'd _actually_ use on a regular basis. Even at that, last year someone local to me was selling theirs on (for a pretty fair price by our standards) and I got the chance to ask him why. He said for him it was just too nice to use. I have a terrible feeling that far too many BCT planes are shelf queens, as the wheel brace is apparently. Or, safe in its box, patiently waiting for the market price to rise, again!

I have the classic Record 073, which the LN is a fancied-up copy of. Alongside the Stanley no.10 Jack Rabbet. Both get lots of work cleaning up big tenons and rabbets and so on for timber frame building. I find the adjustable throat on the 073 is particularly good trimming the end grain shoulders. Had to retire the old type 1 Stanley 10-1/2 with its adjustable throat when it got to be too valuable as a collectable.

I deff see these being handy with timber framing!! that is a great point, I should have mentioned that. I have never done it tho i have a few buddies that have! You are correct about the 073, I am on the hunt to find one of those and a Stanley 94 to compare the LN too. it was a good idea to retire the type 1 10 1/2 because they are $$$$ now lol I do the same thing, if a tool is too valuable I either sell it or it goes in my collection.

Yes, there are plenty of Records (073, 042 etc) available at a very good price compared to these new versions. So if budget is tight they’re a good option, though I have to say, the Veritas has some good features the older ones don’t.

@@BatCaveCreations yes, I saw it. Very interesting video. Seems if you can put up with slightly imperfect (ie used) look, the Record is probably the way to go. Take care of damage around the mouth though, the metal is very thin at the front of the blade bed and many old 073s are chipped there. Now the confession: I was given a Record 073 a couple of Christmases ago (heavy hints worked - thanks darling!) but have never really used it. It’s too big for the kind of work I do. So I bought a Record 042. Still too big. Now I’m looking for an 041 or something else smaller. I have a Stanley 093 but don’t get on with it. I’ll find the right tool eventually. And you can’t have too many tools, right?
