I often get “your dog is so skinny”. She’s a smallish American lab and the vet says she’s the perfect weight. Labs and goldens, usually, should be relatively stocky in build rather than lean, they were bred as working dogs, like the great pyrenees. English Labs and Goldens seem to be much stockier than American ones though, so it may just depend on the particular breed of golden or lab.

6 months ago, I adopted a CHONKER. It was a learning curve for me to dial the feeding in correctly. I had to buy a scale (raw feed). He is now down from chonk to chubby. We are making progress! I'm also working with a doctor to get my own weight addressed. I figured if I'm so concerned about his weight and how it relates to his health, I should give myself the same care and concern. I'm happy to say now we are both making progress. 😊

@rockercaterrorencountered4924 Жыл бұрын
your vet recommended raw feeding 😬 that's surprising. Raw feeding is so risky. it's easy to not raw feed properly (you have to balance all the nutrients yourself), it's hard get all the stuff you need (whole prey including heart, lungs, and other organs), and there's no lifetime feeding trials for raw food companies that claim to do all that stuff for you. It's a lot safer for your dog's health to buy food from a company that does lifetime feeding trials, there are plenty of dry and canned foods from reputable brands that have few added ingredients.

Ummmkay...wow. Appearantly everyone is really concerned about my babies. Cat Daddy Jackson Galaxy recommends it (he has a whole video series and sites research). I am very diligent regarding the source of the proteins, meaty bones and organs as well as the variety. I mostly use Raw Feeding Miami although they also have stuff from My Pet Carnivore, Blue Ridge Beef and Angus Jack Farms. I weigh everything on a scale, use a calculator to do the math to be sure I get the proportions correct, add in supplements and 3 oz of wet canned cat food to every pound of raw just to be sure I have all their bases covered. I have goat hearts, lamb hearts, pork spleen, beef thymus, lamb liver, whole fuzzy mice (a favorite of my chonker), whole ground: rabbit, bison, salmon, chicken, turkey, duck, quail, and a whole assortment of other things I can't name off the top of my head. As I am so diligent about it, their vet has blessed their diet. If I was feeding them raw chicken breast and nothing else, they would probably be dead instead of the epitome of health they are. Every now and then I give them a scoop of kibble to be sure if something happens to me and someone else feeds them they won't 💩 or 🤮 everywhere. Thank you for your concern on behalf of my babies. Please rest assured they are receiving excellent care.

Vanessa, I’m so happy you decided to bring up the topic of appropriate feeding. We have a four year old chihuahua who was 4 pounds 3 ounces when we adopted her at the SPCA. She came from a really bad hoarding home with dozens of dogs and cats, and was loaded with intestinal parasites, so she was almost certainly underweight, initially. She was about a year old at the time. She is the smallest dog we have ever had and it was really hard to adapt to feeding very tiny meals. It wasn’t long before she was almost 7 pounds, and it was clear to our vet and to us that she was overweight. We worked hard to get her back to a weight that our vet was comfortable with (just under six pounds, which is normal for chihuahuas). Our solution has been to weigh her meals on a kitchen scale for every single meal - because it is so easy to over-estimate the amount you are putting in the dish. We also found the frequent small meals kept her more satisfied than larger meals less often. So, she gets approximately 13-15 grams of food (that is a really small amount!) three to four times a day. One of those meals is mostly thawed frozen peas and carrots, which she loves. The other meals are low calorie kibble and canned dog food. We add water to the food to make sure she’s well hydrated and it helps her to feel fuller without added calories. The only treats she gets are cat treats, which are super tiny and have only two calories each. So far, so good. She’s just under six pounds and is generally very healthy. Thank you for highlighting this important issue!

It's interesting about mostly thawed frozen peas and carrots. I will try to add them to my Welsh Springer spaniel food. He is such a picky eater that I don't have to worry about him being overweight. I was forced by him to add liquid food to his kibbles because once he refused to eat dry kibbles for 2 days. I also add raw meat to his diet regularlyý ♥️😆🐶

Healthy weight kinda depends on the chihuahua. Mine is a dear head and her healthy weight seems closer to 10lbs. She lost about a pound after spaying and I’ve noticed you can kinda see her spine when she sits. Fixing that is a challenge when you also have 4 cats, one of which looks like it could lose the pound she needs. Yeah I know; feed them separately. Two kittens on one diet, pup on one diet, two adults on one diet…. Well, at least for now. All cats will be on same diet eventually.
@bcaye
@bcaye Жыл бұрын
@@olgaleonenko9334, if it's within your budget, try raw food. You can find it at many grocery stores in a cooler in the pet food aisle or at specialty pet stores. It is certified safe and may be less expensive than the meat you currently feed, as I'm sure you only buy the best for your pet. It may also be more tempting to him.

I’m both a seasoned veterinary nurse, and also a Pug owner. With a few exceptions, just about every Pug owner/client I’ve ever encountered had an overweight Pug and would not believe me that Pugs can have a healthy waistline (hour glass figure y’all!) until I showed them photos of my own healthy weight Pug. At that point, they no longer could use the “all Pugs are fat” line at my veterinary hospital because they knew we’d all set them straight. Thank you for sharing good pet owner education! Most people do not realize in the US that as pet owners, we control what and how much we feed our pets. This goes for any type of pet, regardless of species. Thanks again and keep your client/pet owner education coming! ♥️🙌

I think the only time I disagreed with a vet on weight was with my childhood dog. She had an extremely healthy diet, got walked at least twice a day, and maintained a weight of 100lbs. One vet my family went to said my dog needed to drop 10-15lbs, then grabbed a bunch of "fat" on her chest area and said she was "too wide". To paint a picture, this dog was a Malamute/Shepherd/Rottie mix. Parents took the dog to another vet for a second opinion. Other vet said "yeah, she's built like a tank, she's a sled dog." That doggo lived her best life at 100lbs to the ripe old age of 14

I had a few people including a vet nurse say the same about my dog. My Rottweiler who at the time was getting tons of exercise, like 2 hours of fetch, 1 hour of walks, plus playing tug of war and all of that on a daily basis until she was 3 or 4 and slowed down a bit. Some people said she was fat or overweight but she was built like a brick shit house and had almost zero fat, it was all rock hard muscle. Most vets thought she was overweight until they actually felt her and realize that while she looked like a sausage link with legs there wasnt anywhere you could feel anything but solid muscle and she was able to keep pace with much more agile dogs like German shepherds and Belgian malanois

My shih tzu gained a bunch of weight and I finally figured out he had learned how to jump up onto things to sneak food. My big dog was leaving his food for a while (picky eater) and if I didn't notice and pick it up right away he was jumping ontop of the raised food bowl. The difference in their measurements is 1/4cup shih tzu 2 cups greyhound per meal and the shih tzu was eating 2 1/2 cups some days because of this issue I didn't catch right away (I don't free feed but give them a good 30 minutes to eat and rest before taking them to go the bathroom). Also had to rearrange my furniture because he figured out how to jump from couch to table to counter and was helping himself to anything on the counter.

cats are clever like that. Showed up in an episode of the simpsons where their cat was living part time at another families home and getting extra meals and treats, but that does happen. Plus there's the times they'll steal food from other cats in their own home or other homes. It's hard enough putting your cat on a diet but even harder to convince your neighbors to lock their cat doors so your cat doesnt break into their house to steal their cats dinner.

I just went through this with my dogs. We all got overweight during the pandemic and it happened so slowly I wasn't aware. My vet tacticly let me know. First time I was very reactive, second time I was accepting. After we all started slowly working off the pounds, we all did better. What exacerbates it is that people find fat cats cute. No, it is not cute that this cat is so fat it got stuck in the opening to its cat bed or covered litter box, that's just very sad. But tbh, it applies to most pets. I'm a reptile keeper and conservatively, I'd say 90% of pet reptiles are somewhere between slightly overweight and morbidly obese. Which also means, if you post pictures of your healthy weight reptile in a reptile community, you might get bombarded by people telling you you're starving them. And it does drastically reduce their lifespan, too. Bearded dragons can get up to 15 years old in the wild, where they have to evade predators, deal with parasites and find their own food. In captivity, most don't make it past age 10 and obesity plays a critical role there.
@marinap-xp7vb

@@beardiemom I wonder a bit if reptile owners can also go overboard due to anxiety around pets going off feed. Not an excuse, obviously, but I get the desire/logic to want to compensate for an animal who hasn’t eaten in weeks. My crestie went off feed recently and it made me feel kinda miserable. I personally didn’t do anything different in terms of her feeding schedule while she was off feed but I could definitely imagine someone in the same situation feeding more often or hand feeding, which isn’t ideal for cresties on a powdered diet. I personally don’t know if I’m feeding her too much and/or too frequently. My usual is a 1/4th teaspoon of repashy every 4-5 days. She never eats all of it, which may be a sign to feed her less? It’s hard when one has to judge based on body condition more so than weight alone.
@beardiemom
@beardiemom Жыл бұрын
@@marinap-xp7vb Oh yeah, absolutely. My beardie had a rough start in life, coming to me with 3 types of intestinal parasites, and at some point, it looked like he wasn't eating his salads anymore, so I started sprinkling some bee pollen on there. Well, he ended up *slightly* overweight due to pollen being sugary and I had to course correct when I realized he was headed in that direction. He now is back to a healthy weight and I am working on keeping him there. My personal way of dealing with that anxiety is by taking pictures of him regularly and comparing them to older pictures to see whether his body condition has changed. And I weigh him roughly once a month directly after a poop to get accurate, consistant weights now that he's an adult. If his body condition changes or there's a drastic change in weight, I either put him on a diet (if he gets heavier and pictures confirm that it's fat), or monitor for more changes and schedule an appt with my exotic vet, if he's drastically losing weight or there's some form of growth forming.

My short hair cat is perfect... But my longhair... it's hard to find her body under all the fluff. I don't think she's super obese, I can feel her body and it's pretty "rectangular" if that makes sense. Her gut isn't sticking out on the sides but it's also not sunken in. It's even with her ribs. She's a smaller cat so the average weight of a cat would mean she's overweight lol. I'm so lucky that my cats sorta self regulate and don't like eating a TON, or I'd be doomed.

My cat was 16 when she died. She looked like a young cat, it was insane. Admittedly, she spent most of her day outside because she liked wandering about on her own, so she wasn't recluded inside and that might have helped her stay lean. But yeah, she looked like a young version of herself, especially to people who maybe didn't know her already. Her face might've shown some signs and her belly skin was slightly loose due to aging, but that's pretty much it.

Same thing for me! One of our cats is very small (runt of the litter). We were giving her the same amount the vet recommended for her brother, not taking into account that he’s quite a bit taller & more muscular. She has been very lazy, not wanting to play or move much and (after the vet gave her a clean bill of health), we thought it was probably her getting older and losing that kitten playfulness. Vet said she could lose a bit so we cut her portions and she’s back to being her playful, super loving self that we haven’t seen in 4 years. I think the extra weight was really dragging her down. It’s so wonderful to see her back to her old self again!

Like us in North America, our pets typically eat highly processed food with lots of fillers, which is also a factor. On top of that, many, many dogs (and cats) experience bloating due to food sensitivities. We took our dog off kibble and switched him to grain free wet food, and within a week he had more energy and had started to slim down. And now, even at 16, he's still trucking. A lot less energy than he used to have, but still very happy and healthy (except for some environmental allergies and the arthritic wear of an old dog with joint subluxation, but he's medicated for his allergies and pain). Obviously this isn't veterinary advice and any major diet change should be closely monitored and take place slowly. This is just what worked for our dog.

Part of how we keep our cat at a healthy weight is not leaving food down. She gets four small meals a day and sometimes less. If I go to feed her and most of the food is still there, I put two extra bits of kibble in there to remind her there's food. She's a smaller girl to begin with, maybe 8 lbs. Shade's been my favourite pet I've ever had and I want her to be with me for a long time and a healthy time. She's already 8 or 9 and she's still active and happy like a much younger cat. It's incredibly important that we take the choices we make for our pets seriously. We made those choices, not them.

So true! Our pitty was about 10 lbs over weight. She's now 72lbs and is all muscle. The last vet visit he at first thought she was overweight until he met her and was like nope she's perfect. She's a healthy stocky broad. It was hard at first to limit her food and treats but now she's 8 and acts like she's 2. We always check the ingredients for any treats she gets and it's really not that much more expensive when you consider the payoff. Also the movement of healthier food options has been noticeable in the pet food market so prices aren't as bad as they used to be. And don't forget that dogs will always act hungry. It's a survival instinct for them. They'll eat til they puke then eat that too. So don't feel too bad about limiting their food.

To anyone offended by this, she was saying the exact OPPOSITE of a fat dog meaning a bad owner. What she actually said was that in North America, it can be difficult to even notice whether your pet is fat or not. It's so normal that pet guardians don't see it easily. This is NOT necessarily because they are bad parents, and also not just because everybody's fur family looks beautiful in their eyes (which was another point she made as to why they may not see it). It's because in North America they are so used to seeing overweight pets, to the point that a dog of a healthy weight can actually look malnourished to them (as she also said). A fat dog might or might not mean a bad owner in any country, but in North America it's a heck of a lot less likely to be the case, that's what I got from what she said. The whole point of her saying it was to compassionately educate people who may genuinely not realise it, not to bash them. If a dog or cat of a healthy weight looks malnourished, obviously a loving parent is going to overfeed them! How could they not?

Your talk about dog weight was amazing. We changed our dogs diet from dog food to complete home cooked balanced food. It is so healthy for him, His coat is full and immaculate and almost could outshine the sun. He also has quadrupled his energy and slimmed down him a lot. He is full of muscle and healthier than me lol. But most of my family gives me a hard time bc he is thin while their dogs are little footballs with legs....

Thank you for speaking out about this! When we got my Doberman she was SO skinny... after what was probably a difficult life being a puppy machine for a backyard breeder and after who knows how long on the street, we wanted to pamper her and get some meat on her bones, so we stuffed her full of treats and rich food. She put on weight... and then put on a little too much weight and started really chonking out! OOPS, we said, and got her some doggy friends for more exercise than I (working full time) could provide, cut back on the fatty meat treats and gave her vegetables instead, and switched her to a lower fat food (which we also gave her less of for a while, supplementing with veggies). She's now back to a healthy weight and a beautiful trim profile and I'm so happy.

When I was younger, we had a shepherd pit and also took in her brother someday because his previous owners didn't have the time to take care of him🙄 he was very overweight at first because they didn't walk him and fed him too much... I remember as he slowly lost weight, not only did he become physically more fit, but his whole character changed! He became sooo cheerful and goofy🥰 when before all he had wanted to do was lay around. Let's give our pets the best care we can! More food doesn't equal more love

Our rescue dog came to us overweight by about 8 pounds (his healthy weight is about 85 pounds). He was described as a laid back dog who lived for the couch. Now he loves his daily walks. We feed him three times a day with occasional healthy snacks. He doesn't seem to care how much food he gets, he just wants to eat as many times a day as possible! HA!

Certain breeds are like that, especially Labradors - mine would literally give you puppy eyes five minutes after eating if food was available. Makes them very easy to train, but a nuisance if one wants to eat a Kraft single in piece as a snack.

Totally agree-my retriever mix is “underweight” according to every stranger on the bus and their mother. He is a perfect, healthy weight and his vet knows best. But retrievers are so prone to obesity that few people recognize what a healthy weight for their dog is.

Truer words have never been spoken. Both my dogs, especially my last dog (a husky/pointer sled dog mix with extremely lean athletic build) always get accused by random strangers of being underweight. 🙄 Really they are/were the correct healthy weight. Great video as always

Every cat I've adopted from the shelter has needed to "gain a few pounds" and every dog had needed to "lose a few" according to my vets over the years. My daughters cat came into the family at 5.9 lds and our vet told us that we should aim for 9 lbs, but we had to watch her weight closely. The cat had had lots of trama in her backstory and had cartilage growths behind her knees, a slightly misaligned pelvis and a heart murmur. Other than that she's a great cat!

Kobe is gorgeous, such a lovely shade of yellow. I confess, my dogs are a bit over fed, but I have been cutting down the chow, and putting up with the sad looks. That's the hard part, ignoring the "I'm starving" face!🥺 Thanks as always for your wisdom and humor, the perfect balance that keeps me coming back for more!😘

People always seem to equate 'feeding them' to loving them. A friend was struggling to pay for her dogs knee surgery, and wasn't understanding that those extra 8 pounds on a dog that should weight 20-22 pounds, was the problem. I finally had to remind her that the extra weight was part of the pain, not the solution. The friend is still my friend (I was worried!). The dogs weight is coming off and that knee has healed nicely. My friend agrees that her dog seems fine with the changes. Instead of extra food & treats, it is more play & cuddles.

Make sure to try to take me on a small hike/walk! They'll love that so much more than over eating, trust me. It's very difficult to limit the food of a pet, I can't even imagine, but you're doing it because you love them and want them to be happy and healthy. You're doing great already! (:

"we see lean dogs as malnourished" YES, this resonates so much with me. People have borderline shamed me that my dog is "too skinny". He's very lean and very athletic and their dog is overweight/obese. It's especially annoying when first-time dog owners try to tell me that.

What a sweet pup! We have a 1yr golden and we did have to cut back on her food after she was spayed. Winter months are tough, hard to get out to run and play to burn off that energy! Thank you for mentioning the weight factor.

3 years ago, my good boy was overweight to the point that he can't climb to the bed. It was shocking to see, my parents kept him for some time and suddenly he can't do the things he likes to do. Overweight and obesity is a real issue, we see them as cute but cute doesn't have to sacrifice health and freedom. Thank you for this video dear! A reminder for humans too! :)

That's true about the weight. I'm from Poland, here a fat dog is a rare view and if it is, the first thing the owner tries to explain is to how he's gonna get his dog on a diet soon. I have a weimaraner and she is super athletic, you can see the muscles on her back. I would say a majority of the dogs I see is well maintained. Don't hurt your dogs, people :( Also, I love how I chose to watch this video right before my workout, haha BTW, this little pup here is like a model for a grooming salon ad. What a perfect goodest boy

That's not my experience in Poland. The labrador retrivers I see are rarely slim (the breed's known for overeating) and a lot of the shorter leg dogs also have quite a rolling pin physique.

Oh, unfortunately, I can't agree. All of the eldery people in Poland overfeed their dogs and by a lot. I suspect it's the post-WW2 culture (same as with overfeeding grandchildren and so on). The younger generations, if they own a dog, seem to be usually more active, so it does hold true in big cities where there's more awareness, not only in regards to animals, but the health in general.

This is a great subject to talk about. Thanks for all the videos, I find them so helpful to watch. I learned how to clip claws properly while watching you. My dachshund is now 13. When I first rescued her (age 4 or so we think) she was an expert at begging (raising the little paw on the little leg which let's face it is pretty cute) and rapidly put on 6lbs!! This was terrible news for a dog that should have been around 14 lbs. My vet was straightforward at her next checkup and I listened to him, thank goodness. Stopped the biscuit/bone-shaped treats which seemed to put on weight massively for her, measured her kibble, and gave her carrots or other low-cal things as a treat to help with her begging. (She was anxious, having been mistreated before, and being given treats calmed her). She used to run away when I picked up the teatowel to dry the dishes, just to give you an example of her anxiety, and she would pica on the walk (try and eat plants), but in a year or so with us stopped that as she got happier. Now she is on low-fat food with low-fat treats and still maintains her good weight. She is getting creaky but at least her back is not under strain because of being overweight.

This makes me feel a bit more relieved, as I always thought my dog looked a little too skinny. He's a very picky eater with a delicate stomach, so he'll only eat one can of dog food a day! If I tried to feed him more he'd refuse it, and I haven't been able to switch to a more calorie dense brand either since everything else seems to upset his stomach. He gets regular vet visits but my vets always tell me 'hes fine' which I was worried was them just being nice but... He's been the same weight for a long time and is presently an 11-year-old mutt, so I guess the fact that he has so much energy in his old age is an indicator that everything is fine :)

Thank you for covering a subject I’m passionate about. I let one of my dogs get a bit obese and I believe it shortened his life. I educated myself about how to feed and exercise my dogs and haven’t had an obese dog since. My vet called over feeding an animal “loving them to death”. Very true.
