Karin L It’s great to met you 👋 I bet it was kind of strange watching yourself talk. And you pulled it off girlfriend 👏 #A and #K are great people😊 Along with being wonderful parents they are doing a great 👍 job caring for their critters 👌 The kids have bloomed since moving to PA. I love the lay of land they are raising their kids on. And K getting to go back home was awesome 😎. I know it has to be kind of hard for A but he is loving all the space and his own hunting woods must be heaven on earth for him. #Karin you sound like you had a wonderful childhood. And for it to have started while you was still in your mama’s womb is awesome. 😊 Thank you both for this video. I enjoyed it a Lot‼️ 😊👍😊

Nothing wrong with that, but you have to think about limitations based on the amount of land available, how much money you're able to afford to feed those animals, having a bull (or AI) to breed to make sure you are getting a fairly regular supply of milk (and ensure you don't get any inbreeding happening), and so on. Part of the plan is going to have to come to terms with finding new homes for those calves, if you don't want to grow one or two for the freezer. Just my advice. 😉

For better tasting goat milk, one must feed good quality food to the goats. If the goats eat goldenrod then the milk will taste like goldenrod. Also another thing a person needs to do is cool the milk immediately after milking, such as put the container of milk in ice water. If it is not done then bacteria has a chance to multiply faster and the milk won't last as long.

I have owned goats almost all my life. I'll tell you, they are not as easy as cows. I have some horse experience and Donkeys. I prefer Donkeys hands down. I remember my first day with my first Jersey cow Fanny very well. She was a full sized adult,1,000lb 4 years old. The prior owner just handed me her lead and away we went! She pulled me a couple feet and once tension was on her face , the halter she stopped. I began walking her every day. Several times a day and we became friends. She had 2 bad quarters but I could milk her anywhere. I put my head against her side and she would stand. Fanny was bred, but her ultrasound showed a "Mummy calf" a very rare situation that can't usually be resolved. I then realized why she was given to me. 5 years later we currently keep 3 Jersey cows and 3 Hereford, one Hereford is our bull. If you visit farms and do your research you will find the breed and size animal that fits your situation.

I want to start off by saying I love the content and all info you produce . I live in eastern pa currently moving to top of Maine in next year or so. I heard in a couple videos how you can only hunt 2 dear per year in pa ....... I don't know if this interest you or not but in pa farmers that grow can get what's called " red tags " witch is basically giving farmers right to protect there harvest from damage and have no bag limit I us to work as an assistant wine maker n the owner of vineyard would all hunters to hunt ( especially with bow ) on the vineyard as long as customers weren't touring that field or workers at time of hunting , everyday we would see a min of 8 + deer in vineyard despite the 8ft deer fence daily at dawn just in case you wanted an option to do some wine tasting n strike up conversation with local vineyards to see if you can work out a deal with them , pretty much win win situation either way That being said , once I get set up in Maine do you think that type of information would earn a discount if you decided to sell off a dairy cow or other livestock ? 😉😉😉 lol #askhomesteady

Do you have a family to feed? One other option is using the cows to feed young calves as a surrogate dam before reselling the calves when they're bigger... if you have enough space to do so. That's one option. One dairy cow can suckle 2 to 3 calves at one time (Holsteins can probably suckle up to 4)...

I’m having difficulty deciding if a cow is best for our homestead and if so what breed? I run a business from home, we’re a family of 6, we only drink/use 2-4 gallons of milk a day or every other day but I don’t think everyone wants to milk twice a day, another factor is we only have 2 acres to spare, our other acre is our dog kennels and agility course for their training needs . Any advice if a cow would work for us and if so what breed? Highlands are my favorite of course but not sure what to prepare for or to not prepare at all.

It's funny that you mention the trepidation about cattle. I have found the opposite with my pigs. The bigger they get the more cautious I get about moving in and around them. I've only really ever had chickens, ducks, geese, etc. My family has had no prior experience with farm life. So far, I think cows are like hooved dogs XD The same thing with goats. we accidentally got tricked into getting a single African pygmy goat, and it got so lonely that my mom had to walk him on a leash, and he would wag his little tail and go BAAHH. He was our first and only goat. My mom called my grandfather on the phone, saying, "Dad, I bought a goat. I don't even know where to start." As she was talking the goat stole her sandwich and yelled right by the phone and all you could hear was my grandfather laughing on the other end.

And then give a little wack on the back thigh and then wait for her to stop and then turn your back. This worked for us and we trained her to calm down a bit. Also she plays with my dog but no more aggression issues. I know it sounds a bit harsh but you have to do it. Also you can try pulling her with a harness like one that goes around her head, a lead almost, just to show that your in charge.

I’ve had dairy heifers do that to me, yep! And Jin has some good advice, although with me being usually stick-less I holler at whoever is being a big prissy at me and then chase them away, repeatedly if necessary, until they get the point that I mean business and am not their plaything. It’s worked for me, and sounds mean but then again you should see how cows establish their pecking order!

Are cows ok by themselves, or do they need a companion?
@karinlindquist2192
@karinlindquist2192 3 жыл бұрын
This is a good question: They can do okay by themselves, but they're much happier when they're with a companion, preferably another cow or steer. If you can't have another cow, companions as sheep or goats is an alternative I would recommend. Horses are a big no-no because they tend to be really nasty towards cows unless they're vastly outnumbered. I've heard way, way too many stories of well-meaning people thinking that their single cow is going to be just fine with their horses or donkeys and then wondering why their cow was going down in condition and looking like hell; only finding out the hard way that the horses (and donkeys) were being much meaner than they'd imagined. Silvia Oriani No you don’t, but IMHO there’s a time when it’s better to send them to freezer camp than have to deal with future issues that come with old age. But it also depends on how emotionally attached a person gets with a cow; the greater the attachment the more that cow’s going to be left as a dear pet than ground beef... and (pun not intended) I’ve certainly no beef with that!!

Cows' milk is for her baby. No one else. not soap, and in what world should a chicken have cow milk? Do we go around taking other women's milk without consent? No.
@Homesteadyshow

Did you know that most dairy cows produce much more milk then their baby can drink? If this milk were not milked out they cow would develop mastitis and could die. So it’s very important a dairy cow gets milked. The cow is capable of not letting down her milk for us, should she not want to, but she chooses to be milked because it relieves the pressure of having too much milk. Dairy cows and humans live in a symbiotic relationship. If you like cows you should learn more about them.

In what world indeed, that’s the first I’ve ever heard of a chicken having, let alone wanting, cow milk. How did you come up with that unusual thought? Also, cows don’t understand the concept of “consent” like we humans do, however a cow isn’t afraid to let you know if you’re hurting her or if she doesn’t want to be anywhere near you. But when it comes to milking, and as already said, when she’s hurting so bad from having such huge pressure on her sensitive udder from having so much milk in her, she gets to “enjoy” the routine of regular milking and having that tremendous pressure relieved. You should talk to lactating women about that, as I’m sure that they can relate!

I've had horses for 45+ years now. Would that be enough experience with a large animal to deal with a cow? not to say horses and cows are the same, but for a background with a large animal, vs. someone moving up from goats/sheep? ?
