In this video I discuss the top challenges I had to face in my first job as a self taught developer. Knowing these challenges ahead of time will help you be aware and not be surprised once you actually do get your first software engineer job.

Man, Brian, you are a really underrated creator for your content quality. All of the things you told were really relatable. I feel like you can grow your channel by making series of videos on tips for cracking interviews or maybe the top tech to learn right now. Also I noticed that you made videos on this channel about finance too. It would be great if you keep all the related topics in a playlist so that it will be easier for the algorithm to suggest your videos to other people. Just giving you some tips to grow as a content creator. Best of luck for that and thanks for making awareness in the community.

As an underdog myself working in the IT field, This is GOLD. I DON'T have a degree, just 8 years of experience in general IT. At 29 and proved myself with my current role of 1.5 years in a Medical IT field they've sponsored me to pick up certifications that can only be picked up being sponsored. Degrees don't dictate your future, your drive and determination do!

Got my first SW developer position. Found that’s it’s filled to the brim with people who think they are better than you and try to show you up every time you make a contribution to the conversation. People like this really make this great field a shitty place. They are too insecure to allow someone else to be right once. Smh…

That sucks man, a lot of companies and teams suck unfortunately (or bad managers). Gotta find the right team in the right company, but it takes some trials by fire to get there! That place sounds super toxic and ultra competitive.

I celebrate you, bro. This video and the previous video is for people like me. I have been in the technical Institute for Programmers in my local area for a year. But always felt like am not advancing at all; as some people say they study coding for three months and got a Job. I ask myself “why am I taking a full year and feeling like I still don't know anything? Maybe this is not my catch “

The "Imposter Syndrome" feeling is so true, but when it comes to reality it actually is illogical in most cases. Coming from someone who self-studied programming but had many friends enrolled in CS in university, I was really insecure about my knowledge and if I was a faker in relation to the people who surrounded these friends. But after going to hackathons and really getting to know these people I realized I was in the same boat as them. Honestly, sometimes I felt like I was actually more knowledgable in things directly related to the field, since an average CS curriculum doesn't adequately prepare for what you would see in the actual job.

Thank you for your video. It gives me hope that I can make it as a web developer. I don’t have a degree in anything related to programming but was always very interested in it. My current job had an open position for a web developer and I decided to go for it. I was given the job but has been very difficult as I have zero experience in coding. I’m practicing every day and putting in the hours so I can get better. Your video has given me hope in that I can actually do this. Thank you again!

The biggest problem I had is that tasks given to the developers are very open-ended, and they require business analysis, which has nothing to do with computer science, and managers don't realize that, so they have unreasonable expectations of computer programmers. It's also possible that they give the most open-ended and undefined tasks to the developers they want to get rid of. For those reasons, I went the self-employment route and just put out my own applications.

I'm going for my Bachelor of Science in IT right now and I'm getting the degree just so they can't talk down on me for not having one. (Partially) Part of it is because I love IT, but I didn't feel it was necessary to go this far considering I have an AAS and months of experience already.

This video was so straight to the point and informative. Please keep posting more vids like this, they are what made me subscribe! Just a quick question though, I'm 16 years old and have been learning frontend languages like HTML, CSS, JS and React for about 3-4 months. Do you think I would be able to get a job/internship whilst still under 18, drop school and focus on this full time, or is there an age requirement?

You know, I've been told before that I should get a degree, with really really well intentioned and well crafted arguments, with real life examples, but they all essentially boiled down to not being respected because of the self taught. And each time I'm like, so I should waste money and 3-4 years of my life, so that when I get the job I'm not looked down on? Fuck that man, disrespect me all you want, we're here to work and move forward in our careers. I don't care what you think of me as long as we can deliver on time together. The veneer or validation and social acceptance covers everything with such a thick layer that most people, no matter how rational, can not see what's behind it. Behind it is the game of skill, work and influence, that's all there is to it. It's like Russ said in one of his songs, "I do the impossible cause I see the invisible." . There's so much more to life than being trapped by wanting to feel officially embraced. But this want also gets brought up in conversation without ever being spoken, they want you to make it by going down the path they did, which would add to their feeling of validation. The world is our playground, and these people limit their worth to the checklist on a job application. It's kind of sad how they can't see the potential of the individual. What ever happened to making your own path? Is the grass really that intimidating that you force yourself to walk down the much longer one already there? Sorry for the rant.

Hey man, you might not catch this message but... I just started University studying CIS and Software Development. I decided to go to school because I know if my money is involved, it forces me to put in effort and not quit in a matter of months (when I tried self-teaching myself, I'd often quit after a month and start again, etc.). I have BASIC concepts as far as programming goes, and currently I'm studying Java on my free time (so far so good!). Though I have a question man... I have this deep inner feeling that is I may not make it, but I myself WANT to be a Software Developer. I stopped gaming just to study Java! Please give me some advice. Did you have a hard time learning deeper concepts of a programming language? Is an Associate Degree enough to be noticed aside from programming? As someone who's never programmed, do you think with the proper dedication anyone can jump onboard with Software Development? I feel like it's a process, as if I'm learning a new language, except this language is syntax used to give computers instructions. Thanks in advance!
