Not sure why you show so many backhands in a video titled about forehands? They are not the same. There's several key points I can think of about stances but the most basic one is if you want to hit a forehand in front like the pro's do then you've got to be able to turn your hips to face where you want to hit. That dictates your stance somewhat.

Excellent video! I like the fact that you observe what a high level player is actually doing in competition. Too many people (coaches includes) are too busy conjecturing about what they "think" the pros are doing. But we don't need to do that. We can simply look at the tournament video at see exactly what the pros ARE doing. We can of course conjecture about WHY the pros employ certain stances, but there should be no mistake about WHAT stances the pros are using, and when. Would definitely love to see more videos like this.

Great to see these questions being addressed. No such thing as a wrong stance, different situations demand different stances.

As a left-handed player and being left-eye dominant, I find I need to be open stanced on my forehand as much as possible in order to always have the court and the ball in sight with my dominant eye. I've noticed I tend to miss a lot more shots when in a closed or square stance.

1:34 If Sinner moves his left foot to the left according to your commentary, his stance would be more open and definitely not closed. 😲

Yesterday I was running in on a short ball on the right singles tram line to hit a right handed forehand, but found the ball coming to my body so on my next step with the right leg I switched (almost spun) to not even an open stance because my right foot ended up facing towards the left , took the ball earlier and hit like an inside out forehand down the line (on the right).. ball went flying low and fast over the net, such a great shot but so weird improvising that!

Good analysis of pro play. How applicable is a closed stance 2hand BH to any player at 5.0 level or lower? That's the time for a 1 hand slice or a lob.😊

Sometimes for a wider backhand I like to go for a closed stance to go down the line to be aggressive

I feel like pros just do whatever they are able to do/ what is comfortable for them, based on where the balls is, how they need to move to get to it, and if they are trying to be offensive or not
@j10browngmail

Maybe I missed something but open is used for offense to any part of the court. If you are square or closed I know where you’re going. Im smashing a fh on a load and explode forehand. I agree you should use the stance for the shot. I’d also say close or square it on tougher days mucH more consistent

I would say that relying open stance for defense when running out wide is really only an option if you are comfortable sliding, right? Otherwise you are probably better off planting closed and then pivoting the back leg around as you swing, so that you can stop your lateral momentum after your shot?

You can still you open the footwork just needs to be snug, planting on the outside foot weighted to a little hop can get you back to the next recovery position quickly, it just takes practice.

Definitely possible and very necessary sometimes. Like on the return of serve or when the ball his hit too hard and deep for you to step in (or back then in).

I would argue that stances are less to do with game situations, and more with the characteristics of incoming ball.

They both play a roll, yes! It's all about HOW you position yourself with the incoming ball
@mogliethai

Yes. There are optimal stances to be in (open or neutral/square) based on the situation be it defense, neutral or offense. However, your position relative to the ball will also dictate a stance out of necessity. Throughout the course of a match, you'll see all top players even hit closed stance forehands on occasion since the optimal or "correct" stance would be impossible.

Watching my last practice session video I was almost always hitting in a close stance. Realise now that it is the result of my partner not hitting deep enough so I dont have to be open, I have time to hit moving foward its ok. I tought I was wrong not being open like the pros are often..

Carioca is a footwork pattern by which you move laterally while switching your hips stepping in and out of imaginary squares in front of your feet without touching the borders of said imaginary squares. Both feet in. Both feet out. You can dance in it, but it helps with martial arts too :)

I don't think that closed stance forehand makes a lot of sence. Why would you use it? I dont see it often in pro tennis as well.
