I would love to hear more about earthworms, especially as it relates to mulch. I use the “deep mulch” method of gardening (grass clippings, leaves, pine straw)…and it looks like the worms are coming up and eating the mulch, leaving lots of granular looking worm castings throughout the soil.

I’ve watched a number of your videos. Great presentation. I’ve always been fascinated by nature. What I have to say is off topic? I’m watching more and more videos on land conservation. Then I look at ancient Native Americans (Indians) teaching. They were about land conservation from day 1 for no money ( I watched your back to Eden video 7 years ago). I know you don’t get paid much through KZfaq. The non profits that receive donations do. They are not saying anything new that the Indians weren’t saying in 1800’s for free. America has killed off the buffalo and poised lakes, streams, land. Now we have this big push to go green!!! It seems we are going backwards. That plant looks great by the way. Imagine not having to plant that and on any given day on your daily walk. You come across such a splendid plant. That’s what are ancestors had before colonialism.

Certainly, your advice as following ɓig sunflowers are great cover crops for tomatoes. Last year in Ohio, we had an uncommon spring drought, and certainly, my best tomato plants were the ones following sunflowers . I'm raised tomatoes 6 different methods testing for quality and quantity for the same tomato typts in the testing areas . Black KRiIM is our favorite, and they are planted in 6 methods, and definitely, the best results are. following the sunflowers. I've 11 other types, and our Black KRiIM are earlier great eating and most productive in the total season. I've had a tomato cage and a T post system that is the cheapest and easiest system for Vining tomatoes . Thanks. " As you say, feed the soil ( isn't that what compose does? I believe is true ..."

Your tomatoes feed the soil from it roots pushing out exudates that contain sugars, carbs & proteins and tell ah feeding the microbes what it needs, Compost is a food source the keeps the microbes alive until the plant roots can feed them, That is why Nature keeps a living root in the ground all the time. That is the reason why you use a cover crop after your garden season is over that keeps a living root that does not die off. Thanks for asking

Some gerdening channels say to heat or bake soil to kill eggs and bugs for indoor use. Doesnt this also kill the beneficial microbes and sterilize the soil? If you did this how do you get the microbes back?
@iamorganicgardening

Yes it kills off the microbes also, To get them back use worm castings they have it all in their poop.

I bought them in Oct. 3 red ones and planted them on new years day. Water them once and not water again until you see the flower stalks tips showing. Bulb size was 30/32cm. They like bottom heat . You can not time amaryllis for growing they grow when they want to. Just got lucky. The pot size I used is 14 inch in dia. and a foot deep for 3 bulbs in it . And do not water the top of the bulb. Thanks

Mark, I have been gardening for 3 years using your recommendations of cover crops, roots in the ground 365 days a year, no till, leaf mold and I am having great results and very flavorful produce. I have a question that could be a topic for a video. Soil biology needs moisture. When we get summer heat and our mounds, beds, dry out except for where we water around our plant, what happens to our soil biology 1-3 feet away from the plant? Example, 20 feet by 4 feet raised bed or 80 square feet. I have 16 tomato plants in this bed. In August I am watering 16 square feet. Roughly 1 square foot around each plant deep soaked. 64 feet square feet are not getting watered. The complete bed is well mulched.

If you have not done a video on worms helping with composting that would be a great topic. I think someone else asked about that as well. I’m specifically wondering if you have to get the red wrigglers or of regular worms will do the trick?

Proper watering please! I have numerous raised beds in NE Pennsylvania. Should I setup drip irrigation or is sprinkler adequate? Thank you very much for your videos. I have learned so much about feeding the soil. Last year no commercial fertilizer, just leave mold and compost. This is my first year growing cover crop, winter wheat. It feels so good to know where our vegetables and strawberries are coming from and grown without any chemical interference/enhancement.

Mark, I hope you and your son are doing well. I am going to start a Vegega 32" raised bed this winter and how would you fill the bottom 20"? I was thinking of old sticks, wood chips and oak leaves. I have enough homemade compost for the top 12".
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening 5 ай бұрын
It is always best to add soil. All organic matter will decompose in time and you have to refill each year. I understand most people say use logs. Yes. it take up space but does not help in any other way. I do not know what you have access to but sand is great to help to add with you old sticks, wood chips and oak leaves. It gives air gaps for healthy soil and water flow.

I grew an Amaryllis bulb for the first time this year and was surprised how easy it was and how many blooms I got from one bulb. I would like to know how to grow large tomatoes in containers. I've had success with cherry tomatoes, but my larger tomatoes varieties didn't do well at all, in the same conditions. 🤷‍♀️ I have no idea if it was soil, size of pot, or something else. I've only grown tomatoes for 2 years, so I'm still new.

We raise and process some of our meat. We throw meat, bones, fat, organs, skin, feathers into the compost. As long as it’s contained and covered with enough carbon (we use wood chips) it will compost beautifully. If your compost starts to smell you need more carbon. Bones are like thick sticks they take many years to break down. I cold compost with large amounts of meat because I don't want to be turning up and exposing raw meat.

@emily. Cool. I have a compost bin with worms and also use wood chips and oyster shell/ egg shell for grit. Works very well. My biggest concern is the prions those weird protein things getting passed on and build up in the soil. Or maybe I'm over thinking it lol. Thanks for your input.
