Aesthetics aside - pros wouldn’t recommend placing the hinge there because it’s introducing a defect near the end grain of the rail (which could result in splitting in the future ) and the screw holes could be hitting the tenon in the joint and a future possibility of moisture entering that joint and compromising it. I mean it would probably be fine for a good number of years but I would probably place mine two inches to the inside of that joint on both sides.

Whats been your experience with how these handle rainstorms? I'm building my own and im realizing rain water could trickle down the glass and get between the wood frame and the removable panel, which may cause problems.

great question! I had the same concerns, but after 8 years I don't even have any finish damage. I think the felt seals keep a lot of water out but also allow water to drain/dry out. Where I do have water damage, is on the exterior sash edge at the window panel - the wood sash surface is about a half inch flat surface. So I am going back to route out that edge on an angle to match a glazing angle profile to shed water instead of sitting on the surface. hope this helps.

What is holding the glass in? Also, did you do a video of you building the windows? How did you build the storm panels and screen panels?

Hi! Yes, check out the link on the description to Part 1 - Storm Window Assembly. The wood frames are cedar, mortise and tenon joinery. The upper sash is glazed in (fixed) and the lower removable framed were made at my local storm window shop - see Blog link too in the video description for all the details. Hope this helps! 👍
