Philanthropy disruptor Sara Lomelin thinks communities can build power through collective giving and the model of "giving circles": groups of people with shared values who come together to make change, strengthen their social fabric and help diverse solutions get funded. Learn the four steps to start a thriving giving circle in your community -- and see how thousands of people worldwide are already part of this movement to usher in a new era of philanthropy that is democratic and joyful.

Giving circles are such an incredible way to create a community within a community, gather around a shared purpose, and facilitate "good" together. I joined a giving circle for the first time this year and am so inspired by my fellow members and the organizations we're able to support financially. This is a beautiful and impassioned talk by the brilliant Sara Lomelin. I found this quote rather shocking, but in reality, it's not that surprising unfortunately: 88% of philanthropic funding in the US goes to the top 5% of nonprofits. My favorite quote: "communities know what communities need."

We don’t have time to wait for needed change. We have to be the change we need. Giving Circles allow you give and engage organization in a real meaningful way. Together giving from abundance! ❤ So powerful!

My "giving circle" is called St Thomas Episcopal Church and we have defined our purpose as Missionaries to serve our community. We are democratic in voting where our outreach serves community of San Antonio. We are multiracial and multigenerational. We all give the "5Ts" out of our abundance. We are not so much philanthropists but servants. E pluribus unam voce !

I come from a country where the government actually governs and much less help is needed in general. Currently I live in a different country , the US.

While I easily get behind the emphasis on humanity and community, I can't help but wonder if this system is fair, in terms of who gets the help. She gives percentages without a reference to compare them to, and seems to imply that the circles could make these percentages more fair, but I don't see how without a centralized repartition of the donations. It feels like a first step before giving that repartition role to a unified system, government or non-profit.

Take a drink every time she says giving circle. I'm drunk. You can throw all the money you want at something that's for the best cause for the best intentions, but you need boots on the ground maybe donate your time instead of your cash

Matthew 5:14-16 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

What she's describing is actually what Christianity and starting a Church is supposed to be. . Matthew 6:24 "“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money." . Matthew 22:19-21 "Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. . Matthew 25:19-28 "Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents." . Matthew 25:34-40 "Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'"

This is what I've been trying to tell people, I live in London and there is a complete blanket of problem where information is concerned because the Queen was so rich and she is dead and it's going to be like that for ever , can you imagine what is going to happen to the UK economy now while our government does nothing because they have been hoping on the Queen

Accents aren't easy to get rid of because of the way language is stored in the brain, is similar to muscle memory, this why there's a lot of people who don't loose their accent even after years of practice, for some brains it may be difficult and for some, impossible.
