1. KK3 was filmed 3 years after the sequel, but still is storylined right after the events following their return from Okinawa in 1985, so basically KK3 focuses on a 3 month timeline up til the tournament. This would explain Daniel's sudden weight gain: which is referenced by Mike Barnes' henchman Snake as he is lifting Daniel's rope up the cliff by saying "You sure are a heavy wimp, Daniel". 2. At first, Jessica was made to be Daniel's love interest. Although the characters were the same age, Ralph Macchio was 11 years older than teenager Robyn Lively, hence no love scene was established

16:59 Yeah, there were at least 442 units! 😀But in regards to how he was able to guess, I would think that there weren't that many Japanese-American units in WWII, considering Japan was one of our enemies, and we had many Japanese-Americans in internment camps during that time. Maybe there was only the 442nd? I didn't look it up, but that's what I'd guess.

I always thought it was strange how Daniel wins a life and death street fight against Chozen who was a Sensei in Okinawa. Then in Part 3 he acts like a white belt against Mike Barnes who was only a tournament competitor. We can only presume Barnes had some kind of natural talent that he honed to the fullest from an early age.

I mean he was already "Karate's bad boy" so he wasn't just a chump off the street. He already had a reputation prior to training with Silver. Considering that Daniel has only been training in karate for 1 year and 2 months total I'd say he did good.

You would think Chozen would wipe the mat with Mike Barnes, but Barnes is clearly in a different league than Johnny. Barnes is a national champion while Johnny is or was a regional champ. Maybe Daniel needed to adjust back to tournament style fighting, which is why he had trouble with Barnes. Barnes was also a dirty fighter, which likely intimated Daniel.

Also just an FYI ---- the face contact rule seems to be exclusive to this movie since every other tournament we see someone is awarded a point for kicks to the face. ------ The 1984 tournament, The 50th all valley tournament (Miguel even imitated Daniel's crane kick and gained a point) and there are plenty of times it was used in the tournament in season 4. The rules changed (Since in this tournament the former champion doesn't have to fight at all until the finals, a rule that wasn't present in the previous tournament Or either of the tournaments in Cobra Kai.

The phrase "But I like that, I like that" is Kreese's own trademark. In the first film, when Miyagi warns him to have the other students stop bullying Daniel as he trains, Kreese responds by saying "You're a bushy, little bastard, aren't you? But I like that, I like that!"

In many Karate (& Tae Kwon Do) tournaments, you can punch & kick to the body but only kicks to the head are allowed. As far as why there wasn't a romance between Jessica and Daniel. Like others wrote, the actress was under 18 at the time. While Ralph Macchio was in his 20s and married. I believe it was he, not the director or the writers, who did not feel comfortable having romantic scenes with the actress due to their age difference. So the script was rewritten and the relationship became platonic.

@@omgbygollywow There are tons of different Karate/TKD tournaments out there and many set their own rules. Some will allow head kicks but with control. If the kick is so hard that it causes the opponent's head to snap back, like in KK1, it could be considered an illegal kick. Also, head kicks, while more powerful, are harder to pull off effectively. While punches are much easier. If you were a fan of KickBoxing pre UFC, you may have noticed that most KOs were usually caused by punches to the head, not kicks. So perhaps they figured allowing head punches would make it much more dangerous. But you're right, head kicks can be brutal. I've seen my fair share of head kick knockouts in point Karate/TKD tournaments.

A few notes: the girl was orginally supposed to be a love interest. But she was 17 at the time and Ralph was already in his late 20s and he refused to have any real kissing or romance scenes. So they made it platonic. Silver was supposed to have a smaller part...basically just the money man, but when they found out Ian was actually a high level black belt (they didn't know when they hired him) they reworked it so he would be training Daniel and his scenes sparring and fighting)

I think the writing of it and then the acting of Kreeses character is very subtle and believable. At first it seems he wants to just let Daniel move on, and we're hoping it's because he may yet have a shred of compassion. No, it's because he's feeling sorry for himself and too tired. Once Silver "juices him up", the old Kreese we despise is back and as dark and ugly as we remember. Nothings changed. To use a poor analogy, I kinda view the difference between Kreese and Silver as like Ra's Al Ghul and Bane, lol.

The face contact thing. In karate punches to the face are not allowed. But kicks are. So in that sense Daniels kick in KK1 was fine. But it is supposed to be light contact kicks to the head....Basically your supposed to try to pull it and not follow through. However Johnny basically ran into the kick...so from that stand point it was his own fault (which is the same argument Silver was making about throwing the dirty punch).

With the current writer’s strike, the final Cobra Kai Season (6) likely won’t be released on Netflix until mid to late 2024 so there will be plenty of time to react to other movies/shows. Yeah this whole movie was a mess. The writers didn't want it this way, but the studio forced it upon them. A lot of people also feel this movie should have been the second and the second should have been the third. Because Daniel downgrades, he just fought Chozen to the death in KK2 and is suddenly whimpering in fear? Also sorry to say, but no one really says this about this movie but Mr. Miyagi also doesn't make sense in this movie. He has guys breaking into his business and his home harassing, they could of killed Daniel on the cliff, and his response is do nothing? But in KK2 when they broke in to destroy the dojo and Chozen was choking out Daniel, Miyagi says tomorrow they're going home. As for Jessica leaving abruptly in the movie, long story short the actress was 17 years old and Daniel's actor was 27 years old, and he was not feeling comfortable doing scenes with her. Also Karate's bad boy is confused by kata? So with all that said, this is rated the worse KK movie, and in Cobra Kai they try to... correct..if that's the word, the writing of the third film. As for tournaments, usually kicks are allowed to the head, and not to the back of the head, not punches. In the first film when Johnny fights Vidal, I don't remember if they scored it a point but they showed Johnny punches above Vidal's face. He was indicating he could of scored a point, but he wasn't actually going to hit his face. Many Karate tournaments have separate portions just scoring for Kata .When I was in TKD, it was "forms".
@kai_masters

Yes, the movie was a mess. First of all, Ralph Macchio did not want to do the movie, but he was obligated to do it because in his contract when he first was hired for Karate Kid 1, he signed on for any possible future sequels. Secondly, Martin Kove, the actor who plays John Kreese, was busy filming another movie at the time, so he could not devote much time to KK3. As a result, the writer, Robert Mark Kamen, came up with the character Terry Silver, and sent Kreese to Tahiti to explain his absence. Terry Silver is played by Thomas Ian Griffith, and it was his first film role. He wasn't even supposed to do any karate in the film, but the fight choreographer found out Griffith had studied martial arts, and so that was incorporated into the film. Third, the writer, Robert Mark Kamen, wanted to do KK3 as a prequel, where Daniel and Mr. Miyagi travel to 16th Century China in a dream and meet Mr. Miyagi's ancestors, but the studio balked at the idea, so Kamen did not want to write KK3, but the studio offered him a lot of money to do it. Even the director, John G. Avildsen, said the movie was "a horrible imitation of the original...hastily written and sloppily rewritten." KK3 was nomited for 5 Razzie awards: Worst movie, worst director, worst actor, worst screenplay, and worst supporting actor.

Nope, same rules. Remember in the first movie when Ali was telling Danny Boy the rules she says no contact to the face. Johnny was right.

Hmmm… I wonder why face contact has been permitted in some instances and disallowed in others. Bit of a plot hole 🧐

@@kai_masters Kicking anywhere above the waist was allowed, also Johnny taught Miguel the crane kick to use against an opponent in the season 1 finale.

He couldn’t “beat Mike more” Mike was too good, if Silver and Kreese had just let Barnes fight HIS fight he’d have won pretty easily. He was a specialist tournament fighter and won a few competitions around the US, some bigger than the all valley.

Good point. We just found it strange that Daniel defeated Chozen in a fight to the death and yet struggled in a tournament against an American fighter. The sequence of the trilogy made it seem that Daniel regressed rather than grew.

This is my least favorite of the Karate Kid films, the writing is actually bad in parts, there is zero character development. Daniel-san lived through a fight to the death with Chozen but now he can't seem to remember that and he's afraid to compete in a tournament? When this came out I saw it as a studio manipulation, in the 80's studios loved sequels as cash cows, make money and give zero attention to the artistic integrity of the original vision. That being sead, I am happy with the way the antagonists of KK3 are brought into Cobra Kai, they have much more character development in the series than they had as cartoon caricatures in this movie.

It wasn’t the strongest movie in the trilogy. You’re probably right that the third movie was made as a money grab

It definitely seemed out of place in the trilogy. Daniel seemed to regress as a character and the plot repeated a lot of the trajectory from the first movie. Nevertheless, it gave us a lot more insight into Cobra Kai, especially the latter part of Season 3 and onwards. Not to mention that Terry Silver is a great villain!
