In this video, author and mental health educator Douglas Bloch shares that when a person is severely depressed, although it may feel like their pain will last forever, in fact, the pain has an endpoint. It has an expiration date. As it says in the book of Psalms, "Weeping may endure for the night but joy comes in the morning."

« To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose... » love it! Most of the time, our pain is preparing us for something better, but we don’t know it in the moment. We evolve and change in moments of pain. The key is to take it one day at a time and to build on the small « wins ».

If I'm having a rough time with my mental health I try to slow my head down and live minute to minute. Cope with each minute as it happens, nothing more. It helps me deal with rising panic attacks, it helps me "what if" thoughts about the future or "did I?/I should have done better/more" thoughts about the past. It helps me deal with a racing mind when I have about ten streams of thought going on at once. Minute to minute thinking, just get through this minute and deal with the next one only when it comes a long.

Thankyou for your compassion and kind words. You give people words of hope and this is what people going through a depression desperately need. I can testify it will pass. I've just gone through a really rough season due to trying to come off psych meds. Ended up in a mess. Nearly at the end of a diazapam detox. Jesus has been my hope and strength. I just knew I had to keep going even through the darkest days. The light will come and it will make you a stronger character than before. God bless you all who are struggling 🙏 remember Jesus loves you, pour out your pain to Him and I promise you know He will help you. He is faithful, He will heal your mind and your pain whatever the cause ♥️

This pandemic has taken so much from me. I had never been happier in my life when it hit. I was just promoted at the job that I love, was out of an unhappy relationship, seeing someone new and very special, had lots of travel planned, had a great social life, was in a great spot financially. Now almost all of that is gone. It's hard to imagine I will ever get back to that, it took me so long to cultivate those things. I'm just feeling really lost and scared and sad.

I'm now starting to feel how much I've lost so I went back to therapy since I'm feeling like I may be going trough another depressive episode but if you were able to do it once I'm sure you can do it again! Hope you feel better soon♥️ What helps me is trying to help other people but always taking care of my mental and physical health first

One way of grouping these different sources of pain was offered by Shneidman, who stated that psychological pain is caused by frustrated psychological needs. For example, the need for love, autonomy, affiliation, and achievement, or the need to avoid harm, shame, and embarrassment.👍

I agree totally, I used to plan ahead for this all the time and get let down when this didn’t go my way. For example I would punish myself emotionally when I used to workout, but I haven’t managed to follow a workout routine for a few years, I gave up for a while saying it was hopeless so this spiralled in to weight gain more depression and anxiety etc, I’m have been looking at my wellbeing differently over the last couple of months by saying to my self that ever workout is a good workout and as a result my diet is getting better my mind set is improving and I’m starting to like working out when I decide I want to on the day but I’m not beating myself up if I don’t workout I just move to the next day and try again. It definitely takes time but I believe that as a result of this small change in my mindset I am more productive at work, I’m more motivated to do this in my personal life and my health is also improving.

This reminds me a lot of the general mindset that Buddhists use in order to gain enlightenment. "Everything, both pain and pleasure, will eventually pass." It really helps me get a handle on things when pain or some sort of negative influence in the moment is making me feel as if my life will stay this way forever.

Douglas, it's good to watch one of your videos again. It's like a chat with a good friend. We've talked before though email, as I've been dealing with severe depression and anxiety for quite some time. 2020 has been very rough on everyone, but perhaps myself a bit more. I recently just ended a toxic relationship with a gal who I believe surely had Narcissistic personality disorder. She's out now and I've moved back to New York from Florida. However, the emotional and financial damage that she was a part of has left some gaping wounds. She left me as I had just undergone surgery for stage 3 colon cancer, which I just had diagnosed a few weeks earlier. I moved back to New York to be near friends and family for my chemo treatments, and to get away from her, 1200 miles away. This has all been very difficult, in perhaps an understatement. I get up every morning doubting my ability to carry on, wondering especially in light of the past few months, whether the struggle of living is worth it. I had even considered foregoing the chemo, figuring that the certain death from cancer would spare me the stigma and damnation of suicide. And I struggle with thoughts of waiting that long, and enduring the physical pain that would entail. I've been in therapy, have been blessed with a therapist who has been invaluable the past few years, and also have sought the counsel of religious friends and clergy, who of course believe my ex girlfriend and the depression itself are a manifestation of the devil at work. I'm trying day by day but it's a struggle Douglas. I have found some relief in one of your favorite methods of relief--bicycle riding. Thank you for making these inspiring videos. They have helped to keep me on this Earth more than once. Bless you Doug.

it depends on how you define forever. If forever means until the end of this life, pain can possibly last forever. if you believe in eternal life. , then all pains may be all gone one day after we die. But even though we may not be able to get rid of pain within this life, we can get used to it and take it as part of our worldly lives, with the help from God.

Something happened today that I absolutely was not expecting and was pretty major and pretty much the only thing that has gone my way since the pandemic started. Already my mind is going back to its depressive state. I just want one day where I can feel happy and my mind doesn't go straight back to how everything is awful.

This is exactly what I needed today, a reminder that, though we don't know when, things will get better. Many scientists are working on finding a cure or vaccine for the pandemic. It is sometimes hard to see light at the end of the tunnel. I'm wearing my "This too shall pass" bracelet and it has been getting a workout today. My anxiety has been triggered by a series of events. Some of them are personal and there will be an endpoint but the agencies involved are taking their time or are overloaded with work and I'm not at the top of the list yet. I know that two of the most damaging words in our language for those of us suffering from depression and anxiety are "What If" and I tell myself to stop thinking about it but it is hard once it takes over. Maybe in the live chat tomorrow we can help each other with strategies to use when we get stuck on "What if" and "When?"

A lot of times, and only through this pandemic have I realized it, that I have a really harmful habit of calling my self a lot of bad names. I often call myself a lot of names just to hurt myself, and I often feel justified in my conviction, like I’ll call myself a racist but I know full well that I’m not, I love everyone I’ve never looked at a man with skin different from mine and said get away, but I still do things like that just so it just cuts deep, like metaphorically cutting with the names I call myself as the proverbial knife. I know this isn’t permanent, I need advice and encouragement on how to fix this I know it’s destructive and I want to fix it.

Depression is also a chemical/hormonal inbalance. As a menopausal woman, I can say this quite honestly. No amount of medication or therapy helps. Most therapists do not understand this and it is not taken seriously by any mental health group out there.

@@hparamesh I have suffered from depression since early childhood. Often didn't want to be alive. After I saw what my brothers suicide did to my mother, I decided to try and hang on as long she was alive. She died last year. I have no idea how to hang on. Many therapies and medications tried. Have become avoidant personality. I don't want to add to the suffering of other people, but fighting to stay alive is horrible and exhausting
