Hi,
I have been meaning to do a video comparing a Par meter to a smartphone app, but I noticed no other reefer has done any explorations on this subject.
Smartphones today can do thinks that even supercomputers could'nt a few years back. Par meter application is quite basic application for advanced camera sensors used these days on phones.
I was expecting an app that could make Par measurements since a few years now and in this video i present the results I found by testing it on my reef tank

Dude, you are a real lifesaver. I'm trying to setup my first saltwater aquarium on a tight budget, and I can't afford a par meter. I'll definitely use this method. Great video!

Thank you! Really surprised that no body else has talked about this. I have been trying to figure out the strength of my lighting for the last week and even used a lux app and tried to convert to par. This is a lifesaver my friend! I found out I was starving all my sps frags and hopefully this was all the problem was.

Did you put ptinint paper over the lens? Does it matter which phine you use?

Nice video! I want to do this but i have a couple of questions. Do you know if the app will ask for a diffuser if your lights already have a diffuser? And does it ask for a diffuser while its in the water proof case? Thanks in advance!

Yes you will need to add a diffuser even if you have diffuser in you lights.

The diffuser is a piece of printer paper over the front facing camera.

Under settings does “Illuminance” have to be in FC or LUX. Thank you

Do you possibly have access to a Samsung galaxy s22 ultra? That is the phone I use and the app says it is not calibrated to it. I don't have access to a par meter to calibrate and verify how close it is, wondering if you could do a video on that.

yes you can find it on android and apple store. app name is photone - grow light meter

For diffusion you just have to tape a piece of a4 sheet on the front camera.. you need this for accurate measurements. have fun :)

@@recif_conde Did you have to calibrate the app with a par meter?. I'm asking because I'm only getting about 30 par and the phone is less than an inch away from the light. App Settings are: Blue + white light Par Meter Using regular printing paper for diffuser

@@michaelbain6402 calibration is not usually required but the orientation of your phone has a high impact so turn on the position setting. Make sure the diffuser is taped well on the phone and there is no free space between the phone and the diffuser
