The single best piece of advice for maintaining focus is to be honest with yourself and adjust your expectations. If I'm taking a putt that is 8 feet on an undulating fast green I'm going to honestly plan to make it about 50% of the time, 40% of the time leave less than a foot, and the rest of the time I just understand it was a single incident of me making an error in judgement. When you approach a task and understand your ability you can focus on the success rather than worry about the failure. I know I'm going to miss 1/2 the time here, and I might even miss terribly 20% of that time. I've acknowledged that, so if it happens oh well, but if I succeed I can also use that to celebrate.

My new instructor told me my putting is rubbish. My ball is on the edge of the hole very often. I think I must be pretty good. My 3-putts fuels me to watch your series. This first episode looks very promising. My first, now retired instructor, taught me how to save most bunker shots. It's easy. And I think this is more than a little about my complete absence of fear for bunker shots. I want to have this relaxed feel for putting to0. You have my attention!

Hi Pete. Been playing this game for over 50 years at 8 or less. I was told at the very out set that putting was the key to playing well.I often win a few pound for fewest putts in a round, currently averaging between 24 - 28 putts per round. My first teacher's words are still in my head " Look, think, stay in the moment and swing" Sounds easy but we all know it isn't. Keep the videos coming

As a returning player (after 25 years away), I find that I am far easier on myself than before. Going onto the course knowing that I am a beginner, not only do I not expect so much, but I can laugh, rather than cry, over my periodic ineptitude. This laughter means that I can enjoy the rounds for the whole experience, rather than just for the result.

I found a huge improvement in my putting as soon as I decided not to try and hole everything. Just agree to give yourself 2 puts from anywhere on the green even if it is just a few feet away-the difference taking the pressure of yourself makes is incredible.

This is very interesting. I had an old putter that i got when i started playing golf, and ofcourse i didn't putt well at the start. But i dragged that sence that i wasn't a good putter with me as ling as i had that putter. I then got my self a new putter, one that i had a lot of faith in. And after a lot of round i thought; damn i'm putting well with this new one, and my confidence grew. I now look at every putt from 10 feet and i dont think about it. Its not one thougth in my head saying that i cant hole this putt. A nee putter in my hands gave me kind of a fresh start. But the funny thing is;when i look back now. My putting wheren't better at all when i just got the putter, i just managed to trick myself into believing that my putting was improving. And because of that, i now have all tge confidence i need on the greens

Create my story. 34 hcp. Started in April. One thing that helped me a lot was to trust the line I picked when I addressed the ball. The other thing was practicing getting long puts close to hole, because if I can get the ball close on the first putt I believe I can two putt from anywhere on the green, and for now that's good enough.

Love putting. Have so many putting books (but not this one), technique, physics of putting, putter equipment books, videos and DVD's, icluding Geoff Mangrum's stuff. Used to live on his blog! My putting vastly improved this year when I switched to a square grip and aligned the edges of the square into the lifeline of my hands, so when I putt, the face is perpendicular to the way my hands swing the club thru the ball. I'll watch all the videos today.

Create my story. My story to better putting............Break you neck. That's all it took for me. Eight months of not being able swing a golf club so all I could do was putt. I had to open my stance because of the rigid neck brace I wore so I could see the ball. I've putted like this 1992 and putt really well. The open stance let's me see the line better. Keep up the good work Pete.

First it did help to get fit, partly as I was fit, partly I was excited to try a new putter, and partly cause I believe my new fit putter is better. However the biggest break through is letting my guts override my mind. Too often my mind would talk me into hitting it too soft or hard, so while my mind is great with the line I need to be on, I've found that just trusting muscle memory on speed has made me a better putter than thinking too much about the speed before hitting it.

There is actually a whole branch of therapy based on self-told stories called Narrative therapy. An intervention would see you label the bad story e.g. "the 3-foot yanker" and think about it's effect i.e. how the story helps you and how it doesn't. Then you would create a different story e.g. "the confident stroker" and think about what you would need to do plus how you would act and think, to enact this different story on the golf course

Nicely presented Peter...thanks for the great vids. This is so true...give it a watch & a read at the book. One of the most influential "golf lessons" I ever had was with The Mind Factor's Karl Morris, Zen Golf's Nicholas Middleton & Golf Coach Mark Shervill...but it was different in that it wasn't on the course or in the bay...it was in the classroom! I learned so much in these short sessions regarding putting, small things that really stick with you & make you a much better & more confident putter...takes a little while sometimes for it all to sink in, but well worth reading & doing what these guys teach as it will help your game confidence... If your club & golfers are forward thinking...over the winter get in touch with any of the coaches above & have an "education" evening...it will give you a new perspective on the game & a better mindset for playing it... Gordi The Gowfer @ A1 GOLF #PracticeWithPurpose ...as practice makes permanent not necessarily perfect!

Very insightful. I consider putting as a strong point of my game. I may score 45-55 for 9 holes but more often than not I can 2 putt all day. Some times I have off days but that's what they are. I aim to 1 or 2 putt every time. I have emotion for good putts and try to ignore and move onto next hole when I 3 putt.

The thing that I do when I’m putting well is I’m just focussed and happy. I’ll pop to the putting green and putt for 9 holes and if I score less than 18 then I’m in a good mindset. If not then I can adjust (I normally under hit putts so I can correct for this after this little game). Takes about 5 mins to do
