Is this the end of America's love affair with pickup trucks? Automotive News reports large pickup truck sales falling 4% in total during Q1 2024, and Ray & Zach aren't the least bit surprised. After all, the signs have been there for several months now, haven't they?

Yesterday, I purchased a taillight assembly from local GM Dealer for my 2018 GMC Sierra SLT 1500 truck. The parts manager told me that if I bring the broke one to them I would receive a 50.00 core charge discount? (WHAT)! I thought core charge benefits only existed for batteries or rebuildable parts. Anyway, the total price for this ripoff was 860.00! So before anybody commits on why I didn’t buy something off Amazon or some other website, I’m over a barrel with traveling and pulling a trailer so waiting for someone to ship the part to me was no possible. My story has been shared by others who have run into this and it’s really taking a toll on truck or brand loyalty. Remember the days of going to a parts store and getting 1156 or 1157 bulbs and replacing them. So just remember these issues when purchasing vehicles and put sales people on the spot!

@@user-oi9bg6fx5t That depend on what models you're looking at. I was seriously looking at a Toyota hybrid until I recently stumbled across the updated Trax. The difference in price:efficiency with my yearly driving means it would be 30-40 years before I recoup the extra $10K spent on a RAV4 hybrid over a Trax, due to fuel savings. Reliability might be the only standard worth paying attention to, but as I've had my reliable Ford for 14 years and +230k miles, I'm not really looking at a car holding value. I just don't need to buy and sell every 5-6 years because I now have extra money to spend. Just don't trash your car, take care of regular maintenance, and most will be suitable for a long time.

The problem with corporate America, their marketing strategy 1- Price gouging. 2- Cut their pay roll. 3- Cut the product quality and offer you less for more. Just in every sector you see these marketing strategy , Companies CEO's have no new ideas to bring to the table, they got by with it for years and now it is catching up with them, they don't understand average consumer wages is not at the same level or as much as their earnings. Plus not to forget the Auto insurance doubled and tripled recently which makes consumer take that in consideration before buying a car or truck. Also not to forget the fuel cost it keeps going up as well interest rates, with do respect if they don't understand these factors they should not be CEO's or be in this position. Also not the Auto insurance increase would not help the Auto sales.

Simply put modern day vehicles are just over-priced jumbles of computers stapled onto a few mechanical bits relying on a hap-hazard style of networking (Token ring) to hold it all together. Probably doesn't help that nearly every truck out there is the size of a barn. I've got a 93 ford truck lifted 4" on 35s and this has become quite apparent when I'm in traffic looking up at modern pickup trucks. I think I'll just stick to my 20-30 year old Ford and Toyotas.

Not sure what the price of a house 40 years ago or a truck 60 years ago have to do with anything. It is and always has been how affordable something is in comparison to how much people earn. @@markcowan3366 Incorrect. While all the extra bells and whistles justify a price increase, they don't justify just how much it has increased. Most of these trucks have gone up in MSRP by 30-40% in just the last 3-5 years. I'm pretty sure the cost of manufacturing them have not gone up anywhere near that in the last 3-5 years. Especially from just "bells and whistles". No, there was a temporary shortage from the supply chain which caused a drastic increase. The manufacturers decided they like making all that extra profit now that the supply chain issues are no longer there and raised their sticker price to what people were paying during the pandemic etc.

My brother-in-law's 2000 Tundra loaded SR5 was totalled by a F3 tornado in 2014. I bought it for $1500. It has a computer, the new trucks are computers that have wheels. It's fast, smooth, is a reasonable size and gets 15 mpg in town and 25 on the highway. It doesn't talk to me or have annoying bells and other sounds. I park it outside because it's already been thru a tornado. The drive train will probably outlive me and if it doesn't I'll drop a new engine in it. My point is there is nothing in a new truck that I want or need. Twenty four years of improvements have complicated the trucks and only slightly improve gas mileage. I can buy one hell of a lot of gas to make up the difference for $70,000.

I'm a one ton truck user, need them for work to haul my tools and parts to various jobs. I was due for a new truck in 21, but prices were absurd. Now my truck is well past its operational life and I'm spending weekends fixing it to nurse it along. Last week we went truck shopping. Stuff is down from peak, but still 25k higher than late 2019. Sadly it's probably as low as it's gonna get with baked in inflation over the last 4 years. One we looked at was a one ton 22' that had been on the lot more than 470 days....

Got rid of cars in favor of suv's because "higher profit margin"". They could charge more for the same material costs. I paid $19k for my focus ST in 2014. It has push button start, a 5 speed manual, and I can unlock the doors by grabbing the handles. Nothing really extravagant by today's standards. Now in 2024, 10 years later, a Ford Maverick, with the same engine, an automatic transmission, no push button start, and no ability to unlock the car without using the key or pushing the fob, is $25k + . If you want those options you have to buy the lariat package and it's $35k minimum. The material to produce the Maverick is the same or possibly less than the focus st. And my focus st has soft touch materials not just hard plastic.

emissions standards and gadgets are a big reason for this; even the baseline trucks have to have a ton of stuff under the hood to meet standards. They are going with smaller engines with expensive superchargers, Turbos, and other things to get the same HP that a 5.7 would have gotten on its own. Then add all the same quality of life things that are in a BMW and bam...80k.

My first new truck was a GMC. A few years later I wanted to replace it. The Chevy/GMC dealer laughed me out of the store when I told him what I wanted to pay. Dodge Ram trucks were nearly $10,000 cheaper on equivalent models. I ended up with a new Dodge pretty loaded for the cost of a Chevy work truck price. A few years later Dodge announced they were raising prices across the model range to keep up with the other makers. They got greedy and never saw a ceiling to pricing. Now they’re so inflated they’re in too deep. I’ve been a Dodge/Ram owner for almost 30 years. I’m about priced out on getting another full sized truck.

I bought a used 2014 Ram1500 in 2016 for $26,300 with 13,000 miles on it. It came in on a lease, and was a garage queen. Even had a carpeted bed liner in pristine shape, lol. I remember there were a couple Hellcats sitting in the dealerships for about $65,000. I was thinking, wow that's a lot of money for a toy, but I knew it was a niche market, so big deal. I never thought just a few years later, the average pickup truck would be the same price! So now today, with the CPI coming out higher, it's not going to help truck sales. There is still part of me that goes conspiratorial and thinks this is a covert effort to push people out of gas guzzlers and into more economical vehicles. Like you said, the average person realizes that you don't need tons of steel to get you back and forth to work for many jobs. I drive a 2019 Toyota Yaris for commuting. 45 mpg, and it's all I really need much of the time. However, I also carry construction supplies for projects, and tow a 20' trailer with a New Holland tractor with attachments, so I need a truck occasionally. My plan is to get a good full size truck, like a used V8 Tundra, and use it only when I need to haul, or tow, and basically hold onto it as long as possible. Meanwhile, I will drive econo boxes for normal transit.

That's true even for Toyota. Prices of their trucks were creeping up even with the 3rd generation Tacoma despite terrible reliability issues and quality control failures. They raised the price of the new Tundra and Tacoma by $20k across the board, but the quality of the new Tundra has been awful. Glaring design issues including big gaps in trip pieces that allow water to collect inside the doors, and serious issues with the new turbocharged engine that is causing them to fail catastrophically. The new Tacoma launched and a lot of buyers are angry at Toyota for adding $20k to the price of every trim level and for adding a totally new engine that they don't trust to be reliable like the engines Toyota built 20 years ago.

I got my new 2016 F150 XLT 4x4 for $36k, which was $13k off the $49k MSRP. Back then, Ford, Chevy, and Ram were always offering $10k+ in incentives for the full size trucks and almost nothing for mid-size trucks, which meant the full size trucks cost the same (or even less) than the mid size. Now it would cost $65k MSRP for an equivalently spec'd F150 XLT, whereas a 2024 Ranger XLT is $45k. It sure seems that Americans were spending like crazy during and post pandemic to deal with their pandemic frustrations, which increased demand while there was limited supply. The automakers took advantage of this and decided to jack up prices as high as they could, because so many of us are hooked on our full size, super comfortable trucks. Like everyone is saying, they will keep charging those prices as long as people keep paying.
@rumitcu

I should also mention that my F150 has been my favorite vehicle of all time, but now I have low cylinder pressure which is costing me at least $2k and if that doesn't work, then it's $10k for a new engine. Spending $10k on a replacement engine for an 8 year old vehicle with 82k miles seems crazy until you look at the alternatives. Based on this channel (and my desire to not accrue sizable debt), it simply doesn't make sense to be either a new or a used full size pickup right now. Fingers crossed that the $2k repair will be sufficient...

I can remember when the Extended Cab was an (expensive) option. Does any automaker still sell a Standard Cab pickup truck? Two wheel drive? An eight-foot bed? Most of the trucks I see today are actually luxury cars with a tiny cargo bed stuck on the back so it can be called a pickup truck.

I bought my 05 F150 for $5000 2 years ago. It does have 200k but runs and drives beautifully. And i only use it when i need a truck. I only driven about 5k miles in the last 2 years. DONT NEED A $80K truck for that

I can't believe they found so many morons to buy these trucks at all. Rams and Fords were popular because you could buy them at a lower price point than GM. This was several years ago. My company bought eight Fords at a time because you could get them so much lower. than Chev. I can't believe manufactures lost their way so fast.
