That's one amazing piece of engineering. I'll take it! At 12:00 those are mostly IRFB4110 HEXFET MOSFETs from what I could tell. Each one can switch 180A @ 25C continuous or 670A if pulsed, which they definitely are. Absolute monsters, and a low gate to drain resistance on average of 3.7 milliohm. Extremely efficient! The MOSFETs switch on and off at varied levels to produce a pure sine wave, basically simulating AC using DC, which runs to likely several windings of that transformer, which induces a massive magnetic field on the iron core, and also as a result induces current within the output coil(s) with a different winding ratio to output the higher AC voltage. My guess is that you have two windings per half, one smaller gauge layered underneath each of the larger gauge coils that are visible. Each half possibly dedicated per phase. Just a guess though.

Hi Joe. As a electronics tech I can say that the insides of this inverter look nearly identical to the powerstar w7. Lots of info in forums about repair and modifications of these. Good workhorse. I have been running one for years now. A highly recommended modification to this inverter is to add a tuned circuit between primary inductor on the primary side of transformer and a cap on the output. Will lower your idle power consumption by half at least.

You will see people say low frequency or high frequency inverter. This is a low frequency inverter. Very robust and good for starting motors etc. Down side is there is usually a little more voltage sagging or light dimming when big loads are rapidly changing. More noticeable on lead acid. These style inverters are more robust than high frequency types.

Due to it using a full size transformer, and with adequate sized wire and circuit breakers per leg, I haven't had a problem of pulling 7-8kw out of one leg. wow that thing looks top quality! I agree with the output terminals, just run wires straight into the breakers. Also your transformer explanation is pretty close to correct, It looks like there is a full H-Bridge of mosfets on those inverter heatsinks so that is able to connect the T1 and T2 of the big transformer to Batt + and Batt - for half the sine wave, then do the opposite the other half. There may also be some PWM involved to help make a cleaner sine wave. I do find it odd it is using standard TO-220 versus a much bigger TO-247 package. Seing you and FFcossag get inverters like that makes me want to eventually get something like it.

At 4:00 you recommend adding washers to the battery terminals. The instructions say not to add anything between the flat and ring terminals because it may cause overheating. See second point in page 7. Washers on top of the terminals may be okay. But, I don’t think you want washers between the connection.

Those are all mosfets, on the right side of the inverter they are all IRFB4110, so 8 of those per leg of the H-Bridge. so that is 120A multiplied by 8 or 960A!! which would work for 46kW of inverting power lol. Having big margins on your components are nice, it keeps them cool. Datasheet if you wanted to poke at it: www.infineon.com/dgdl/irfb4110pbf.pdf?fileId=5546d462533600a401535615a9571e0b

Hole story choosing this over others.... Budget friendly and split phase. Originally I was saving for an MPP LV5048 but then saw David Poz video and it not starting a radial arm say. That was out! Then Low Frequency got added to list. Continued to save for an Aims, but through research ect I heard they dont like big transfer loads. Like if you have a single transfer switch and switch from grid over to inverter without turning off all circuit breakers first. Not that they cant but I hear they dont like it. Then Shawn Maker got the 6kw growatt (smaller of mine) and it looked decent. More research and what sold me on this one is I saw signature solars KZfaq ch and them using the 6kw (same as Shawns) starting a bunch of saws, air compressors all at the same time and it didnt blink an eye. So I went with the 12kw so I could attempt to run the hole house. I also like that it can be used like a UPS, bypass ect cause if Im at work or whatever, wife should be able to have power regardless of battery voltage as it will switch back and forth based on your settings. She does NOT want to be down in basement flipping circuit breakers, switchs ect cause the sun didnt come out! Thats the short story. If I had tons of cash I would have really looked into a sol-ark as they might be a little more efficient!

Nice inverter, these came to market a bit after I got my Growatt SPF 3000's. I am curious what the no load consumption is on that one? On my Growatts its about 44 watts per inverter. Looking through the manual the setup looks really similar to mine, though the MPPT controller has a 30 volt higher range which is a nice improvement as I could have done strings of three of my 72 cell panels instead of strings of 2. I am curious though is it 7000 watts max solar into it, basically 2 strings of 3500 watts or is it 7000 watts on each string? The SPF 3000's I have can do 4500 watts each so up to 9kw between the 2 of them that I have. Looking forward to seeing your inverter in use.

Thanks Man! and thanks for your help! Hopefully my last email went through. 44watts on one of yours seems pretty good to me! Im sure this one will be a little higher since the transformer lol. @@AveRage_Joe No problem man, got the email this morning. It's great when everyone helps each other! On my one inverter that's fed with only the 72 cell panels I'm using strings of 2 to stay under my inverters voltage limit, on the second inverter thats fed with 60 cell panels I'm feeding it with strings of 3. Both setups stay under the 115 volt limit for MPPT tracking of these. 4k of panels on the first inverter, 3.7k of panels on the second. I'm actually looking at adding in a third inverter for some other 120 volt loads and then I can move a couple smaller strings going into a pair of Victron charge controllers to that inverter, would give me about 2.2k of panels on that inverter that are currently only the victrons. So far coldest morning in full sun was about 32 degrees and I didn't exceed 100 volts on either string so I'm good to go so far. Looking forward to seeing your system in service.

you mention that you have the low voltage PV input model, but on your previous unboxing video at the 5 minute mark, your spec sheet reads max PV input voltage 250 and MPPT range of 60-245VDC. I just ordered the same one from Signature Solar and eagerly awaiting delivery. Did you find out if the max 7000w input is per side or max for both? I emailed them with that same question, but have not heard back yet. Great video and can't wait to see your next video with this beast in action.

Nice video. You mention this is a LF (low frequency) inverter. Can you detail why you think that is? I believe this is actually a high-frequency inverter with a built in auto-transformer for split phase. That helps with surges on the 120V phase, but with longer duration sustained surges (central A/C, etc), there will typically still be problems. But does look good performing overall in the tests in your other video.
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Man! The company I bought it from and or the manual states LF. Plus a dead giveaway key difference between a HF and LF inverter is the huge transformer. Ive never seen a HF inverter with a big transformer and or split phase transformer. The company and listings I purchased from also state its ability to start 4 ton AC units without an issue. I guess in time as my battery size increases Ill find out for sure on the AC units!😀

@@AveRage_Joe Yes, would love to see some tough 240V inductive testing with this - central A/C, 240V air compressor, pumps, etc - if you have those kind of loads. The specs detail large surge rating for sure, but they don't specify the surge duration so hard to tell what this can really do for 240V. For 120V, the transformer sure helps as energy can be stole from the other phase - for 240V, its all the inverter electronics.

This is a true low-frequency inverter. Note the total lack of any high-frequency boost converter circuitry (multiple small transformers mounted on the PCB, usually in rows). Notice also that the battery connections wire directly to the main FETs...and the main transformer primary wires are bolted directly to the FET heatsinks. All voltage boosting is being done by the main transformer. If the transformer was purely an autoformer, it also would not need such thick windings.

Hi Average Joe. I appreciate this review. I've heard that going "big" with the inverter makes sense so you can grow into it. We have a fairly simple application right now to run a 10a well pump and 3/4 hp pressure pump ( both 240v). Someday we will put more demand on the system. My question is sizing a battery and PV array to work with this inverter. Would there be a problem using only 6 (250 watt) panels? Also intend on purchasing one 48V HSKY - LiFePO4 - 103Ah - 5.3kWh lithium phosphate battery. Does pairing with this array and this battery make sense? Thanks :) New subscriber.

Thanks for watching! I wanted to go big so I can grow into it as well and I also wanted the option to run powertools or welder at any time while running the house. Yeah you could use this inverter, the 6 250w panels and the husky like you want no problem. I actually started with 6 235w panels, my diy tesla powerwall which is a little over 220ah. In summer I could recharge fully, winter was different but we get a lot of snow lol. With the Husky being half the amp hour you shouldnt have any issues at all. If you get the HV version inverter you can wire all 6 panels in series assuming your panels are around 40v open circuit. The LV version you would wire in 3s2p. Another thought if you dont need the 12kw like I have is Bigbattery has kits now with a 6kw growatt inverter thats just like mine and a Husky battery and cables. If you need/want the 12kw then sigsolar is the cheapest I found.🤘

I share Your opinions on AC input, output and solar panel connections. Especially with that nominal power. However warranty is void, You can try to find more suitable termination blocks. But I think this is for the time when You are ready for whole house on this beast. As far as I can see there is no galvanic isolation between solar panel inputs and battery output(by means with transformer). You can examine this by continuity test between every solar input and evri battery terminal(Thought four black cubes could be relays and could break the connection). If there is galvanic connection between solar and battery, I would suggest serious surge protectors to be installed. One close to the panels, one close to the inverter solar input and one close to the inverter battery terminals. This for battery terminals should be for 48V DC systems.
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 3 жыл бұрын
I would be nice to maybe connect directly to the circuit breakers. I can check continuity on those terminals to see. I think you are correct that the black boxes are relays. @askostadinov
@askostadinov 3 жыл бұрын
@@AveRage_Joe Yes, it is good idea when doing final install to connect directly to the cirquit breakers. You will loose some conviniency for wireing, but will be most reliable connection. Can use area of terminal blocks for strain relief of cables. Cables will became stationary for the inverter, but I'm sure You can manage this. I have rewatched the video several times. As long as I can see on 7" tablet, there are blue discs on the edge of solar charging board. Most likely these are varistors, hense there is internal surge protection. If there is combiner box on the roof, You can add DIN rail mounting surge protector. I think 120V AC rated varistor surge protector will do the job. Since max PV voltage should be 150V DC. On AC input/output board I have mentioned some green disks. These could be varistors too. Hense internal surge protection. But I'll recommend to use external DIN rail mounting surge protector additionally. Especially if You plan tests with some kind portable generator. For 48V DC I couldn't provide link. I have only seen these in Emerson telecom rectifier cabinet. I suggest 48V surge protection mostly conserned about Batrium cirquits around the batteries. In my professional practice I have used self made 48V DC surge protector. And it was with very good results. I could explain how to make such in another post. And I always forget. Mery Christmas and happy new year! Long live inverters and batteries!

@@AveRage_Joe ok dear but if i install 4000 watt on each pv (3 panels in series) it will have a problem? I use the extra watt for direct load to my house and 3500 for charging

Quick question that I couldn't find or get answered too. We have the same 12kw Growatt. Did you figure out if each PV input can handle up to 150volts DC? Or is it combined total between the two ? Thanks in advance.

Oh nice! So those kits I think have the 250v solar input. The tag/sticker on the side of inverter should say. I actually have the 250v version as well. When I did this video I ordered the 150v version and they sent the 250v version. Win win😆
