James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away 4 years ago.

This year on American Idol, a young man named Iam Tongi performed this for the audition, in honor of his father who had passed away months before the auditions. Not a dry eye in the house. Then in the finals, he performed it again in duet with James Blunt; Iam was not holding it together, so James took over as needed, and at the line "You can feel my hand on your arm", he patted Iam's arm reassuringly, and Iam was able to pull it together and sing more. Amazing professionalism and compassion from James, particularly considering how emotional this song is for him. Both performances are worth a look.

From what I can gather, this song was recorded exactly as we all see it. On take and no 'Auto-Tune' because James wanted everything to be 100% real, true and entirely genuine. As a former officer in the British military (like his father) James donated all the proceeds from this song to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do such wonderful work for ex-servicemen and women. I defy anyone to watch this remarkable video and not feel like blubbing. We're all human after all. ❤

It is hard to sing when you really cry. That was his Dad and at the end everyone in that room was crying except his Dad. He told them he wasn’t dead yet. If James hadn’t released this his Dad would not have found a rare kidney match and he wouldn’t still be here. A first cousins with the same name as Charles and no one knew about was the match. Charles had already donated one of his kidney’s years earlier. I love James’s work and he writes amazing songs. He is really funny in interviews and just a lovely person. I have seen another video of this with James playing the piano after he knew his Dad would live. It has nowhere near the impact of this one. For the first time I wondered how James got through this. I didn’t get to say goodbye to my Dad, he was 51. James wouldn’t allow anything to be added, just one take and no auto tune. Hid Dad did it for him to have. You can’t not feel in this song. Thank you for your reaction, I have watched it countless times and I still need tissues.

It is his father. They were both in the British Army which teaches to be very stoic and in control of your emotions. His father was very ill with kidney disease and did not have long left unless they found a doner. They eventually did, a distant relative came forward after hearing the song. After the video, everyone was upset until his father deadpanned “why is everyone crying? I’m still here!”

I’m English and even this song passed me by yet its a few years old, maybe coz bad stuff was happening in the whole world. This whole video was one take, he sang this song once and once only with his dad listening. The music people wanted to auto tune it, could you believe?? His dad’s life was saved by this song, James quite poetically and literally chased the monsters away ❤ Hugs from England 🫶🏼

This song is very special not just because of the meaning but for James blunt being able to share and show so much of his emotions. I’m not sure if you know but both James and his father served in the military and as you know the military pretty much tries to erase the emotional expression aspect out of its troops. So for James to be able to share his emotions not just with us but to his father and right in-front of his father (the video is James fathers first reaction to the song) is a huge deal as it was probably something very unnatural for James to do. Ofc the meaning is quite self explanatory but I’m sure you know it by now but just in case. Yes that’s James blunts father, when this video was recorded his father was suffering from kidney failure and didn’t seem like he’d make it in a few months. So james wrote this song for him obviously saying what he needed and saying his goodbyes. Fortunately this song gained massive traction upon its release and a distant cousin heard it and decided to get tested for compatibility. That distant cousin ended up being a match and james father was able to have a healthy kidney donated and is still alive today. So in a way this song that was supposed to be a goodbye and an ending chapter towards james father actually served as the hope and reason behind his father’s miracle. Beautiful story and a happy ending to a beautifully sad song. Great reaction and like most of the people that listened to this song, no need to apologize for expressing the emotion James tried to perceive through the song!

Just found this song. Lost my dad a little over a month ago. We basically had this conversation. I took him to the hospital thinking it was going to be just like every other time. Instead, 3 days in the doctors told him there was nothing they could do. They gave him 2 to 4 to live upon discharge. They kept him in the hospital long enough for family to come from out of state. He passed 7 days after discharge. I love you dad.

There's two [arts to this: 1) James Blunt's dad, Charles, had previously donated one of his kidneys. so when he himself got Stage 4 kidney disease, it was terminal for him unless he got a transplant of his own, because it was the only one he had left. 2) James had pleaded for a donor for his dad while doing press for the album on which Monsters was the fourth released single. At some point, an extended family member saw the music video and was so moved that they got tested and confirmed to be a match. So his dad got a kidney, and has been in successful recovery since 2020.

This song was originally a poem written by James sister for their father, James sang it for their dad and asked if it was OK to release, this is the song that saved Charlie's life as a cousin saw it and got tested and was a match, the lyric, I'm not your son and you're not my father comes from their time in service together where they wouldn't let family ties affect their service and they used to say this

The wonderful thing about this song is that after it was released, a distant relative discovered the history behind it and as a result came forward to see if his kidney was suitable to transplant. It was and James’ father is alive and well today.

😪 Juliet, I've seen this video before and was very moved - your reaction, though, did have me in tears. I'm amazed how you still managed to give your usual excellent analysis while being so emotional 👏 I saw a quote recently which said something like "authenticity always beats quality", which ties in with what you said about his focus on expressing the emotion of the song rather than the technical delivery. There is a young UK artist called Ren Gill who is gaining recognition for his impactful performances and videos which demand the audience's attention. It would be great to get your reaction to his work. His breakthrough piece is called "Hi Ren" where he bravely delivers his mental struggles for the world to see and gives a powerful, sympathetic message. Don't worry, it won't make you cry like this one 😁. Even if you choose not to react to it on your channel, I'm sure you would find it very interesting and inspiring.

The core message I get from the lyrics and this performance is a child saying to the parent "It's OK to relax, you did your job well so now it's my turn". James and his father were both officers in the military. The phrase "We're just two grown men saying goodbye" was what his father said to him when they deployed to different parts of the world. It was his father's way of acknowledging the fact his son was now a man. James has turned it around to reassure the parent that he is accepting that role.

So he's at home, trying to get on with things as 83 year olds tend to. I'm nowhere ready for saying goodbye but I have to prepare. Every morning I wake up to think mum will call me to say he's gone overnight. Having a big big cry today. Marko from nightwish fame did "the voice of my father" & that one got me even before dad was really unwell.

James wanted this to be 100% real and authentic. It is his father This was the first time he'd sung it to his dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually find a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. First time I heard this was 3 days after my Dad passed away and it broke me I lost my Dad 4 years ago this August after he fell and hit his head sadly he didn't survive it caused a bleed on his brain I sadly never had the chance to tell him I loved him and that hurts but i know he is at peace now.

I'm sure other dads have already said it, but here goes: Your connection, as a daughter and mother, is real, and you relate because you are human and someone else's sadness is haunting. However, as a son and father, the connection speaks to what every boy, either consciously or unconsciously hopes for in life...the approval and pride of their father and it also makes the connection for every father who desires to leave such progeny in the world which honors him for a job well done. Great video, thank you, and I send my love to you!

Love your reaction and your comment about the bravery and sharing your truth. If you want more of that, try most of the artist Ren’s catalogue. Much of it is heavy as is his back story. For as much as he has suffered in his life and the tragedies he has lived with, he has kept his souls good and kind.

The “don’t be afraid, it’s my time to chase the monsters away” gets me every time. It’s a parent’s role to care and protect their child, but now the roles are reversed at a deeply sad time. Whats even more touching is how he preceded that by calling him “Daddy”. It’s so often seen as a bit juvenile for an adult to call a parent that, but it subtly shows how he’s still sees himself as the son he always has been.

It is such a tender, loving act, prosaic on its surface but profound in its intimate connection. This is what my wife and I do when we have our granddaughters by us. After we bath them and put them in their pajamas, we fold their play clothes and put them on the nightstands beside their bed.

This song always makes me Cry. Ironically this song reached a distant donor who was a distant relative of James. Saved his dad

Something else too, it was all done in one take as James wanted the complete raw emotion & at the end as you can imagine, the whole place was full of crying sobbing people. Charles looked up & said, "hey, what's with the tears, I'm still here". Hahaha

It is ok to cry. Never hold back or apologize for your tears, wear your tears like jewelry because they are what is you and you are what makes them beautiful. ❤️

Your reaction was au point. It proves you have a loving heart. I am about the same age as James’ dad with kidney disease so this is poignant to me. Bless you for sharing your emotion.

Um, I ran into James Blunt KZfaq- videos March of 2021. Now in 🇺🇸 we were losing a lot of people to Covid-19. There were no emergency cases in East Africa yet. I got so tuned to Chase-Monster song. Like I listened to it everyday, and I enjoyed every tunes of it. Not knowing my Lovely mother was on the way out too. Yes, some how in spirit while I enjoyed the very meaningful byes in this song, my Mother would die May 2021. I realized the separation was already happening in spirit as I was alone here in the Lock down of all countries of the world. Chasing the Monster is my favorite song.

This is the first time I have been able to watch this video the whole way through. The fact that I now know his father survived made it easier to watch, but not much! This is right up there with Johnny Cash's 'Hurt', and Sinead O'Connor's 'Nothing Compares to You', for raw emotion. James is actually a very affable, pleasant, self-effacing and personable fella in real life. But this shows his power to perform from the heart.

Its the process of loss with a parent when they come full circle. When they need to be cared for like he did as a child. He is saying he is putting his dad to bed for what might be that last sleep. (this was what was expected at the time due to medical issues for his dad) He is saying he is a man now and will chase the mosters away so his dad can "sleep." The short sentences make it easier to follow but they are also how kids talk. And how one speaks to a kid. Sooooo many layers to this song!

Super cool! Thank you for the video. I was wondering. How do bloggers record such reactions by using somebody's music and not get blocked by KZfaq due to copyright?
@YourOnlineSingingCoach
@YourOnlineSingingCoach 3 ай бұрын
Usually the publisher of the song/video will allow it, but they will collect the monetization. The videos are more likely to be completely blocked if there is no pausing during the video. I know the pauses for discussion drive a lot of people crazy, but that's the best way to avoid getting blocked.
